Gordon/Choo/Segura

Guys -

I have Shin Soo Choo - i have a chance to aquire Alex Gordon and Jean Segura for him.  So here is my question:

Does Jean Segura's presence in deal, make up for what i am losing between Choo and Gordon?

I think if Gordon has a peak year he can match or surpase Choo's 09', 10' production but overall, i give the edge to Choo.  I really like segura when he's on the field but I have read he has had a history of injuries (even before this year)

what do you guys think?

What is your window to compete? How does the rest of your OF and SS / 2B look? Do you have any particular categories of need?

If you’re not competing this year, have a strong future OF, and need a SS / 2B with about a 2 year timeframe, I could see it.

are you concerened about Segura’s injury history?

A match

What’s interesting to me is how similar of players Gordon and Choo are. It took Gordon longer to come around but, his season tis year looks just like one of Choo’s from 2008 -2010. I’d say going forward they are roughly similar though ordon will be 28 next year and Choo will turn 30 next July.

This makes the difference in the deal Segura, doesn’t it?

Agreed

I don’t think I would have said this in April, but I think you pretty much have to make the deal if you value Jean Segura even a little bit.

First off, RLWhite has the right approach re: contending versus whether to deal Choo.

Segura still has the talent to be special as a MIF and his value has dropped significantly given his injury this year. For instance, last offseason, in a deeeeep dynasty league, I dealt Segura and a couple of spare parts for B.J. Upton. Upton may not be a world beater but still getting a youngish MLB CF in a near-straight-up deal was his going rate just a few months ago. I say grab Segura while you can.

Gordon will regress some, and this is his age-27 season (as casejud mentions), but he should still provide decent 3rd OF numbers for the next few years.

I disagree

There is no reason to suggest that Gordon will regress any more then Choo over the next few year. In fact, I would say that Choo, being two years older, is more likely to regress during that time frame, especially when you consider that hes been a professional baseball player five years longer, and the wear and tear that can put on the body.

Meanwhile Gordon, after two missed seasons, finally is showing he is at least most of what was advertised. Plus that lineup continues to improve, which should bump up his RBI and run totals.

Gordon is probably more .280 than .300

which is maybe what the regression talk was about. but yeah, he’s pretty good still. should bat 1-2-3 in a decent, hopefully very good, lineup.

i think choo provides more SB, and he’s in a pretty good lineup himself. if you think Gordon is for real, it just depends on how much you like Segura. i personally am not a big fan, but that is just me.

I didn't suggest that Gordon would regress more than Choo...

just that he would regress from where he is right now…not a huge drop, but maybe 20 points across the board (BA & OBP).

don't touch it

Choo is way more proven and way more reliable, Segura in no way shape or form makes up for the difference.

The trend in general in the majors has been towards youth. Since the crackdown on PEDs, it’s gotten harder and harder to sustain peak performance. Proven is no longer as reliable as it was 5 years ago.

Also

If Choo is so reliable, why is Gordon having the better, healthier season? I’m not picking on Choo but, Gordon was hurt, now Choo has gotten hurt. It happens. I don’t look at Choo or Gordon as being injury concerns any more than the other.
