Arizona Diamondbacks Organization Discussion

Bench coach Alan Trammell and manager Kirk Gibson of the Arizona Diamondbacks try out their intimidating faces. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)

I am now working on the Detroit Tigers Top 20 list. The next team on the list is the Arizona Diamondbacks, followed by the Tampa Bay Rays, Houston Astros, and Baltimore Orioles.

Use this thread to discuss the Diamondbacks system, point out sleepers, etc. The strengths of this organization are obvious.

Jarrod Parker

He is a clear strength

J.R. Bradley is likely to get overlooked

But he shouldn’t. Regularly 90-92 (even in second-to-last start of the year), broad shoulders, clean mechanics, flashes a pair of big-league-average off-speed pitches (change-up could be more IMO). Could easily see him adding as much as three mph to his fastball (he just turned 19 in June). Command is an issue that needs to be sorted out, but he was 18/19 this year in full-season ball and kept his head above water (sort of…). Also built up 140 innings on his arm this year, so he has a good start on building up innings counts.

Also outside of the big top-10/15 guys, Evan Marshall also merits mention among the best relief prospects around. Probably more of a B- guy and I’m not banking on him being a closer, but he should see big-league time in 2012. Also like Michael Perez and Michael Blake - hit up to 96 mph according to BA - from this year’s draft.

You have any video of Bradley?

I’ve looked everywhere and can’t seem to find anything.

They also really pushed him this year. 142.2 innings as a teenager; yeow. Hopefully the org knows what they’re doing, and I trust that they are, but man that is a lot. Especially in his first fill year.

He held his velo through his final outings

And have had him skip Instructs to keep the workload down a tad. If he holds up, he could be ready for 200 innings by 2014, when he’s 21/22 years old…

ah, nvm

found one. He’s a lot more compact than I thought.

Certainly larger than Pat Schuster or Tyler Green.

anybody got anything for me on Ty Linton?

Toolsy but raw outfielder with high-round talent (especially power potential), signed to big overslot deal last year. Had an okay year given context, other than piling up the Ks . . .any word on how he actually looks on the field?

by mrkupe on Oct 28, 2025 4:11 PM EDT reply actions

obviously haven't seen him

but Dan and I were talking about him the other day, and how the Jazayerli article at BP about high-school ages and the potential for scouts to (subconsciously) overrate a high-school players future ability because of his current age cannot bode well for Ty Linton’s prospects…

Not a clue

Wish I did. Talk to me in eight months or so, hopefully he starts next year in South Bend so I can watch him.

John Pedrotty

Pitched well in Yakima - under the radar lefty out of Holy cross.Obviously not top 10/15 but a nice sleeper from cold weather state ….

Yazy Arbelo?

Any info on this guy looks like a power monger (31 HRs in South Bend) takes a walk (73) but low BA & hi Ks…..yet still manages a nice .877 OPS .

Same trend line as his 1st season -—John is this guy a prospect or just a re incarnation of Cody Johnson?

Arbelo's a NP for me

Saw him repeatedly this year. Tries to pull everything, and in the MWL it worked, but when someone at Double-A with some legitimate velocity puts a fastball on the outer third and at the knees, you can’t try to put it in the right field bleachers (as he tries to do, though admittedly I did see him yank an outer/lower-thirds fastball for a homer…). I also don’t think I ever saw him hit something that wasn’t a fastball, and he looks plain silly on off-speed that’s low out of the zone (a lot of the K’s come this way). He’s also pretty rough at first base defensively, not great at making digs, crappy range, and rough footwork.

Finally, I saw him nearly kill Cleveland’s Felix Sterling after charging the mound following a HBP in his first PA of the second-to-last game of the season. No idea if there’s a history there (doubtful considering Sterling pitched all of nine games in the MWL this year and hadn’t faced South Bend yet), but he took off his helmet and threw it as hard as he could from about 15 feet away. Thank heavens he missed, because he was aiming with bad intentions and could have seriously hurt Sterling. That kind of attitude from a fringe-prospect with massive bat holes at 24 years old in Low-A won’t be tolerated much longer.

With how perfect 1B prospects have to be in the minors at the dish, Arbelo can be mostly dismissed IMO. Maybe a bench bat. Maybe…

Not top-30 either, as I see it

He could be solid, but I’m not going to jump to conclusions based on a short sample of Northwest League data.

random blurbs

Adam Eaton… Is he an everyday OF’er?

Ryan Wheeler = Eric Hinske type? (yes that’s a lazy comp)

Is Evan Marshall legit?

What grade does Bryan Shaw get had he not graduated?

first question

i want to know so bad as well…..

i wonder what people who have seen him play in the AFL think. particularly defensively.

by blue bulldog on Oct 29, 2025 12:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Hey

I’ve been making that Hinske comp all around the ’Pit. You copying me? :-P That seems like a best-case scenario at this point, really.

I think Eaton could be, but in a corner. Something like a +8 run glove, good BA/OBP bat, and a few doubles from a LFer. Could get an unorthodox everyday LF out of that, no?

Marshall has been one of the hot topics of Instructs, apparently. Kevin Towers said he’s a candidate to see big-league time next year. Who knows.

Shaw would have easily been a B- for me had he not graduated. Dude is disgustingly good.

ha, nah

I’ve honestly never seen you (or anyone) make that comp. But mainly because Wheeler doesn’t get talked about a lot.

Admittedly, it's not hard to see why the comp is made

LHH and RHT playing the corner infield and maybe corner outfield -→ Eric Hinske. It’d be an awesome return on a fifth-round pick if it happened.

Eaton

reminds me of Parra

though it’s likely his range is not as good as Parra in the OF

by blue bulldog on Oct 30, 2025 5:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Parra is bigger at about 5'11" and 195 and

his best tool might be his arm. What are the reports on Eaton’s defense?

by ThnkGoodnessforHowieRose on Oct 30, 2025 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions

i don't know about the range

but the arm is supposed to be pretty good i think

by blue bulldog on Oct 30, 2025 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

he has better plate discipline though

yeah

and a higher penchant for getting hit by pitches

i guess i see potential for Eaton to put up numbers similar to what Parra did this year, except better OBP, and worse defense, though probably still positive defense

Well no wonder why he calls himself “Spanky”

Trevor Bauer

Who is a reasonable comp? Don’t anyone say TIm Lincecum.

by Rockiesfan17 on Oct 29, 2025 10:48 AM EDT reply actions

can't really comp a player like that

Lincecum is the closest one, but they still have a lot of differences.

Most interesting thing to me

Is who will be number 1? I love the top handful of guys in this system and any of 4 or 5 could get the top spot

by ADLC on Oct 30, 2025 9:18 AM EDT reply actions

I bet Bauer ranks #1 on John's list.

But I could see Skaggs taking the top spot as well. Can’t go wrong either way.

I guess it comes down to

Do you think Tyler Skaggs is a Grade A prospect? Otherwise, Bauer is clearly No. 1.

by mrkupe on Oct 30, 2025 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Gotta be Bauer

Skaggs is #2, then a toss-up between Parker and Bradley. Davidson seems clearly behind those four guys.

Eaton bandwagon

Any room for me on the Adam Eaton bandwagon? Hopefully he gets on base and steals more than Spilbourghs of Colorado. Is that a fair comp?
