Weird...
Not a single quality prospect at 3B this year.

mmm, AFL
So tempted to make a trip out there for a long weekend! Don’t think the crew is quite as strong as most previous years, but still.

Sands and Freeman on the same team
They only have three OF though, so Sands will probably see some time there. Hopefully both will get plenty of playing time.

Glad I'm not the manager of the Javelinas
He’s going to have to manage playing time for Ackley/Kipnis at 2B and Hechevarria/Iglesias at SS.

I've been told that Ackley is a 1B, so problem solved ;)

sands will play the OF with Freeman at 1b most of the time
Dodgers view him as an OF but his flexibility gives them options.

Hurley
That guy has been through a lot, two hand surgeries since recovering from his original injury. Hope he can come back and be useful in some way.

Interesting that Sierra wasn't sent from the Jays
given his lost season. Thames our outfielder heading out has had a stunning season so odd that they’re giving him extra work.

Also a bit surprised that d’Arnaud wasn’t sent but I imagine it has to do with his injury, they don’t want to take any chances this year.

D'Arnaud is done for the season
Just had an op. on his back last month.

They probably...
don’t think Sierra’s advanced enough. He hasn’t played above the FSL, and with his lost season he’d be thrown into the deep end by going straight to the AFL.

Interesting to see Lavarnway
I thought Vitek or Kelly would play too

Vitters will be very impressive.

Jarrod Parker
Can guys be added? DBacks had said they were sending Parker to instructs and then the AFL to get some innings in.

Yes, there will be plenty of changes to the roster before they play
And as Bryce notes, there will be some changes during play as well.

Adron Chambers
Don’t overlook this kid. He has a lot of skills that you like to see: Good defensive OF with above avg-plus speed and a solid arm. He is a gap hitter that hits for avg and will swipe some bases. He still needs to refine his base running technique and as he gets more experience he will hit plenty of doubles and triples. I like this kid quite a bit.

Brandon Wood
After having one of the worst showings by any player in the last few years I am encouraged to see what Wood brings to the table in the AFL League this year.

If Brandon Wood were to go 85-for-85 with 20 HR in the AFL, I wouldn't care
He already proved what he can do against High-A/Double A pitching previously. Unless he’s sporting a completely retooled swing - and more importantly, approach - there is nothing his numbers in Arizona can tell us that matters.

ahhh, but what if he went 20-for-20 with 85 HRs? I bet you didn't think of that Mr.SmartyPants

Touche
If he does that, I do hope the Angels will release him from his baseball contract so that he can fulfill his greater destiny.

Christopher Carpenter
He’s really gotten better as the season has progressed, with a really strong end to his tenure at AA in August. He still has a very good mid-90’s fastball and a good breaking ball, with a decent change-up. Consistency is an issue, but if on, he feels like he could be a 3 or 4 type starter if all goes well, or maybe a late inning pen arm.
by toonsterwu on Sep 1, 2025 2:20 PM EDT reply actions
Was very impressed last year
I’ve mentioned him a couple of times. I probably saw him one of his better days, as he wasn’t consistently that good (and I suspect the breaking ball especially isn’t that consistent), but when he’s locating that fastball and curve, he’s pretty nasty.
And Rafael Dolis probably deserves more attention as well. Dolis isn’t striking out a bunch, but h gets a ton of groundballs and keeps the ball in the park, and he does have OK secondaries as well as the plus fastball. He could easily be a #3 SP. One of the best guys I saw in the FSL this year.

Daniel Murphy rehab/2B for Mets
Any task BIG or small, Do it well or not at all
by Rickfansince76 on Sep 1, 2025 3:36 PM EDT reply actions
In winterball
Murphy is going to the DR, I don’t think they’ll send him to Arizona.
The Mets have only announced 4 guys so far, so 3 to be announced:
LHP Robert Carson
RHP Josh Stinson
CA Kai Gronauer
IF Jordany Valdespin
That’s a pretty weak group. I don’t think any of those guys is in their top 10, and Carson is really the only one close, and that’s on raw talent; he’s not ready for the AFL. Stinson is a solid pitcher with not much upside, probably a pen arm. Gronauer is sort of interesting as a sleeper, he’s a very solid defensive catcher, who could be something if he hits enough, but hasn’t shown much pop, and just a bit behind on plate discipline as well. But coming out of Germany, he could maybe be a late bloomer. Valdespin has some tools, and can square the bat on the ball and make hard contact, but probably gets done in by lack of discipline at higher levels, and ends up a Yuniesky Betancourt or Joaquin Arias type infielder who doesn’t get on base enough and doesn’t play defense as well as his tools suggest he should.
The roster still is in need of outfielders though, so I’m guessing Nieuwenhuis and Ratliff are at least candidates for spots there.
