Suggestion Thread
Someone asked for a suggestion thread a couple of days ago, so here's one for you.
I have plenty of Retros to work on, so please suggest other things. I'm concentrating on College World Series stuff for SBNation.com and a Rotowire Top 100 update the next few days, so any large pieces will have to wait until next week, but I'm open to ideas.

Loewen is putting up pretty awesome numbers so far in AA this year, just a year after being converted to a hitter! Your thoughts on him would be pretty cool too.

This makes no sense to me
The retros are great features. As with anything else, you learn from history and it helps you as you look to the future. Learning what biases we had against prospects that made it when they weren’t expected to or where we gave too much credit for “can’t miss” guys that did just that is extremely valuable.

Agreed.
I know that they aren’t particularly interesting to read, but they absolutely have value in terms of figuring out the right and wrong ways to evaluate different kinds of prospects.

Personally I find them boring
I know others like to read them but I personally find them boring and of little interest. I would bet that if John ran a poll of everyone’s favorite features that it would go as follows:
1. Crystal Ball
2. Prospect Smackdown
3. Daily notes
4. Prospect Retro
Cwhit is just giving John his actual feedback and I have to concur.

And I agree.
It depends on if you’re trying to improve your ability and knowledge as a prospect evaluator, or if you’re merely trying to waste some time while learning about prospects.
If you’re in the former, the retros can be pretty useful. If you’re just looking for prospect updates and the like, I can see why you would find them pretty worthless.

I suppose
Though if all you’re looking for is updates, I don’t know why one would take the time to read the retros. Some things that John posts aren’t my cup of tea, but I just don’t read them instead of calling them dumb or boring. He’s catering to a large audience, and you can’t please all the people all the time.
Not saying that you believe that or support that opinion, just saying I don’t get it.

Yeah, I don't understand why people get all bent out of shape because they have to scroll past a post they're not interested in
Not to mention that the community on this blog is pretty impressive, and lends to enough discussion that John’s pieces don’t always have to necessarily create the topics or anything.
That would be pretty incredible if John could satisfy every single one of his readers. I wish I could do that, too.

Nobody is getting bent out of shape
People are merely stating what they do and do not like. I find it amusing that people get so upset when somebody says they don’t like something. John is asking for suggestions and feedback. Just kissing his butt and saying you love everything is not helpful as it does not allow him to accurately understand what his target market desires, which leads to less traffic and less revenue.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion
However you can simply state you don’t care for a certain feature, instead of being rude and calling it “dumb” as cwhit did above. No call for that at all really. As for the less traffic comment, it seems to me John has been cranking out more content the last few months than ever before. The community itself is still extremely active as well. I don’t see any reason why traffic should drop off since we’re probably close to one of the highest levels of activity both from John and the community as the site has ever seen. Even if you don’t like half of the content John is producing, he’s putting out probably 3 to 4 times the content as in previous years so there should be plenty that appeals to different viewpoints.

by gatling on Jun 24, 2025 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree to an extent
Cwhit should have used more respect when voicing his opinion. That being said, I think you underestimate the importance of knowing what your market desires. Corporations pay big money to deteremine the wants of their audience, so it benefits John to know exactly what people like or dislike.
I agree the community is still very active, but you can always strive to make improvements and increase traffic. Doing so means more money in the pocket of Mr. Sickels.

Sure
I’m not saying market research isn’t valuable, it most definitely is. My point is we’re getting large amounts of varied content currently so there realistically should be something for everyone out there now. Take your list above. My top 4 would be something like:
1. Smackdowns
2. You’re the GM
3. Prospect Retro
4. Historical Pieces
That doesn’t include AA Transition Monitors, Notes/Updates, Thinking About…, AQA threads, etc. With a community this size there are going to be widely different thoughts on what is most important to each person. I think the best thing for John if he really wants feedback is probably to run a survey, either thru SBN or one he could create and link to on his own. That way he’d get a larger range of answers by being able to ask specific questions about various pieces. I mean just on retros we have about a 50/50 split on them from the handful of people that have responded.
A survey with all the various options(and maybe some new ones, like the Mailbag) where you would rank your choices top to bottom would be a better way to gauge overall what people want. It’s always going to be a small sample that actually responds, but the more detailed the questions the better the answers will be.

Crystal Balls
These never go well for anybody involved. Never. They’re funny to look at but otherwise they turn into fanboy havens.
I love the Prospect Retros. It’s pretty rare that I don’t learn something about a player. A lot of the newcomers to the site often don’t understand the context that we viewed prospects in at various points in time.

Prospect Retros
These things rarely generate any discussion. Just look at the comments for the recent Retros:
Roy Oswalt - 7 comments
Hunter Pence - 7 comments
Tim Wakefield - 7 comments
Jose Bautista - 5 comments
These threads rarely generate discussion. If people loved them as much as you claimed, don’t you think that more discussion would occur? Maybe you don’t like the Crystal Balls but they always great at generating discussion.

Not necessarily
I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’m more interested in seeing the history of the prospect and how John analyzed it/would analyze it than anything else with those. So no, I don’t comment in them very often even though I read them every time John posts one.
As for the Crystal Balls…John’s already said he doesn’t enjoy doing them. The problem with them is people with a vested interest in a prospect want to see the best possible outcome in the CB and get mad when anything other than a HOF career is projected. Go back and read the Billy Butler one as an example, people were throwing fits because John didn’t project multiple 30 HR seasons. Check the stats and you’ll see John was actually more favorable to Butler than what Billy has actually produced the last two seasons. Read the Franklin Morales one, people overwhelmingly said it was pessimistic though John had him with 2 seasons of 190+ IP coming into this season. The nice thing nothing stops anyone else from doing them on their own here. Casejud did that at least once that I remember.

The only difference with mine is that mine IS intended to be a prediction of the players career, not just one possible outcome. I meen we all predict things all the time and are either wrong or right so, why not go for it!
I’m one person around here who actually LIKES to have a somnewhat heated argument about a player once in a while, but I understand it bothers other people who read it - so Im working on it.
Enjoyed the Panda conversation generated by the CB and I don’t think mine was so optomistic, even looking a year later. In fact even I, one of his biggest supporters around here, was pretty off on his 2009 season.

If anything, if offers excellent insight into John’s tendencies as a prospect evaluator. One of my biggest gripes about evalutors is that very few publicly reflect on their prior assessments as a means of future evaluation. Honest question here
How is what you’re suggesting different from the Minor League Notes you previously said “aren’t exactly discussion pieces”? Ok, if you say so.
I certainly don’t want to get into a “thing” here, but if this is because of Frederick getting banned I have to say there seems to be an awful lot of overreacting going on here, IMO. The guy had good baseball insights but didn’t wanted to follow the same standards as everyone else is held to.

I understand where you are coming from
But I also believe there was a lot of overreacting on Frederick’s behavior. Perhaps he crossed the line, I don’t know because I wasn’t participating in those threads. However, far too many people cried bloody murder when he made some jokes or posted some pictures. The guy knew baseball, added good discussion, and threw in some comedy (sometimes risky, lol). Anyways, what’s done is done. As always, this is John’s site and he can run it the way he wants, that’s his right. That’s my 2 cents on that.
As for the site, I come here for the discussions in the fanposts. I don’t want to sound like a dick, but I find John’s material boring and meaningless at times. He does all these writeups about players that nobody cares about (ie certain prospect retros). I think doing indepth profiles of current prospects, for example, breakout guys, would be far more appreciated by us readers. For instance, an indepth writeup on Wil Myers, or John Singleton, etc.

Here's the thing though
After John gave him a warning, Fred decided to continue to push the envelope and he now pays the consequences. It’s not like it was completely out of the blue when it happened. The issue was Fred didn’t want to follow the rules, plain and simple. That’s his choice, but the people making him into a martyr is bordering on ridiculous. What should John have done? Warned him again? You do that and the rules appear lax and all of a sudden more issues crop up all over the place. Not sure if you were reading the site during the Sock Puppet drama, but I certainly don’t blame John for protecting his interests here. This is part of his livelihood and not “just the internet” for him like others have suggested.
As far as the site goes, I’ve been a member here for over 5 years and the content has been pretty much the same the whole time. It’s interesting that it took Fred’s banning for these complaints about the content to come out. And yeah, you do sound like a dick saying John’s material is “meaningless at times”. The retros are one of the most requested items when the suggestion threads go up, so obviously there are plenty of people who enjoy them. Just because you don’t care for them doesn’t mean that is the prevailing opinion. Using your examples here, how in depth of a writeup could be done for Singleton with 141 AB’s this year? Especially when John hasn’t seen him play?

How about some case studies
Looking at current prospects, and showing three past prospects with different career outcomes, make comments and prognostications about where said current prospect might fall in relation to others in the past. This is a bit detailed, and would probably take some time, but I think it could be interesting. We have the habit of comparing prospects to current major leaguers, but not to failed prospects, which builds in a bias. This could help. Also, it brings some historical perspective found in the retros together with current prospect work. This seems a bit rambly, but hopefully I got my point across.

Crystal balls are something I really don’t like doing any more. Too many people think they are a “projection.”
by John Sickels on Jun 24, 2025 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions
No offense intended
But I’ve never understood why they can’t just be a projection and I;ve never got a chance to ask you that. It’a all in fun anyways - a serious venture - but fun nontheless. I did a Pablo Sandoval one and I said “This is what I think his career will look like!”. I almost think they are more interesting that way, myself. Sure, any of us who do one will be wrong a lot. I would have loved to see what my Andy Marte CB would have looked like - but I would have just laughed at it because predicting the future of ballplayers is a very, very in-exact science, as you know. If you did the CB’s as a projection - it’d be interesting - more interesting even than just saying it is “One possible outcome”.
Just my opinion.

What kind of programming do you normally watch?
USA has just started running some of their shows out with new episodes, I love all of In Plain Sight, Royal Pains, and Burn Notice. Pysch and White Collar are both excellent as well, and should start up in a couple of months or less. If you haven’t watched these, I strongly recommend checking out any and all DVD’s of them you can.
I’ll wait until you give me an idea of what kind of stuff you enjoy before throwing out more ideas.

Ok let's see
I really enjoyed Warehouse 13 on SyFy last year, it’s getting ready to start Season 2 soon. Leverage on TNT is good, so is Saving Grace and The Closer. I’m intrigued by Breaking Bad, but haven’t had a chance to get started on it yet. Criminal Minds is excellent if you haven’t watched it, there should be plenty of seasons of it out there. I’m a big fan of all the Law and Order franchises(though I quit watching Criminal Intent this year when they dumped Goren and Eames). You didn’t list any comedies, but I will throw out The Office and Big Bang Theory as ideas there.

though I’d suggest someone other than Ryan as the second name. He never had the kind of control Stras has exhibited. The lowest BB/9 Ryan ever posted was 3.3 and he had more seasons with a BB/9 rate over 4 than he did seasons under 4.

Oh I agree
I just think Ryan is specifically a bad comparison. As great as he was, Ryan’s control was down right bad for many years. He didn’t post his first sub-4.00 BB/9 ratio until age 33. The comparison between the is going to be brutal when based off their first 5 starts.

I'm going to go with suggesting the Alternate History pieces
Good way to combine historical analysis with contemporary prospecting. I like using that approach with preps who passed up college to go pro, but it’s really interesting to think of it from the other point of view. For example, if Anthony Rendon had somehow been signed out of high school by the Braves (wouldn’t have happened, but still), what kind of performance would we be looking at for his first two pro seasons?

John has done something like that with prospects, projecting what their college numbers might look like and where they could be projected to go in the draft. It would be interesting to see it done from the other side though.

Why the change in standards?
Hi John,
I am just wondering why you have decided to tighten the trolling standards. It seems like I have read much worse here from certain posters and they have never been punished. Have you received many complaints from various posters, or a lot of complaints from a select few posters (the usual suspects)? If you have received a lot of complaints from a large selection of posters then I commend you on this decision. If not, then I hope you do not listen to the vocal minority. Also, I would understand the tighter enforced rules if site traffic had been declining. It seems to me that a lot of quality posters have left the site or do not post as frequently. It would be worthwhile to find out why they have chosen to visit less often/leave.
Thanks,
KBR

Traffic is fine and continues to trend upward at a nice pace. That said, i do receive complaints from various people, not a small group, about childish and immature behavior from a small group of posters. Some people have indicated to me that they have left the site or don’t come as often due to this group. I tried warnings but they were ignored. So I have no choice but to start banning.
It it my job to protect the interests of the website in my best judgment, and that’s what I’m doing.

Agreed
It is your website and you can do what you want with it. However, I just hope the moderators focus not only on the outsiders (i.e. Cwhit) but look at some of the quotes from the “in-crowd” of guys. I don’t want to name names but lets just say one is a big Red Sox fan and continually insults other posters. The oddballs (i.e. Dewey, Bravesin07, Paul Thomas) add so much to the site and seem to be as liked as they are hated. I just hope the moderating isn’t only focused on this minority. Thanks for listening to my 2 cents and I look forward to contributing to this site.

I think KBR was just trying to bring to your attention that their is a poster that is an instigator and perhaps he should be on your and the moderators radar. There have been several instances where I have made fanposts that involve prospect rankings where RedSoxFaithful comes in with a loaded gun and starts firing insults such as the fanpost was stupid, I am an idiot, etc, etc. I dont mind the sparring because I always end up winning, but it is pointless arguing and insult throwing that takes away from the content of the fanpost I intended.

Yeah, let's not name names!
I “continually insulted” the content that you and Dewey put out, because I believed it to be disingenuous and poorly researched, criticism that anybody who is putting self-generated content up for discussion should be ready to combat. Neither of you were, and obviously the three of us have never been on good terms as a result. Oh well; it happens, and I think some people need to have thicker skin around here to an extent. It got to the point for a while where your rat pack just patted each other on the back every time one of you posted. Maybe it made people soft to criticism; I don’t know.
All that being said, I don’t take anything personally here. Nor do I hold any grudges. If you put up something I like, I’m going to recognize it; it’s not “oh, KBR or Dewey posted; let’s rip them to shreds”. I read most of the posts around here, and I’m only going to post my actual thoughts. It is almost never personal (though I have admittedly slipped when shots were taken at me, because obviously I’m human, and I have a temper). I could probably stand to open up my mouth less when I disagree with things, but I have a tough time silencing my BS alarm when people are trying to broadcast misinformation and are largely getting away with it.
Anyway, I honestly hope this blows over and you are able to stick around, because truthfully you do provide some value to this community. Like I’ve said elsewhere, I don’t really have a problem with people trying to start their own communities, but it was the way that it was happening that irked me, and you obviously didn’t have much to do with that.

How hard is that, really? Nobody should be hesitant to post. If you’re posting something that you think could potentially put you in hot water, then either 1.) don’t post it, or 2.) be ready to accept the potential consequences. It’s really that simple…

No, that's not it at all
I’m asking you to look at it from John’s standpoint. He issued the warning, Fred violated it. If he didn’t proceed with banning him, what alternative does that leave him? He sets a bad precedent that the warnings are meaningless if he does nothing. I don’t know if you were around here for the La Goofy/Joba debacle, but I’m positive John doesn’t want to ever see a situation like that again. If he doesn’t follow up on the warning it opens things up for someone with harmful intent to come in and infect the site.

For the final time
I have stated that I feel that John can do what he wants. I am just expressing my opinion that John is handling this incorrectly. I mean this in the most respectful of ways, but in this instance I think John is wrong. I don’t think Frederick did anything too over the line and it really isn’t related to the Joba/La Goofy/Blind Zorro issues. That was one poster who had numerous sock puppets. Frederick is obviously one slightly insane poster. Besides, in my opinion the rules are not being implemented fairly as certain posters seem to be untouchable while others get picked on. Also, I think some of the moderators are abusing their power by selectively deleting their posts.
You can respond to this if you like, but I will not respond on this subject with you any further as it is apparent that we disagree and neither of us will move off our stance. I enjoyed debating this with you but I consider the matter closed.

They violate the same rule again in short order. What do you? How do you protect your interests if you don’t ban that person before things spiral even further?

I didn’t take offense, other than the annoyance of being dragged into something that has nothing to do with me. (See, Dewey’s post a couple minutes ago, two above this one)
Whatever. Like I said, I don’t go into any FanPost with my “guns blazing”. I read it, think about it, and post my thoughts. If those thoughts happen to include “Jesus, you’re bad at this”, then yeah, that’s what I’m actually thinking. It’s not a personal shot, just a commentary on the content.
And to be honest, the people who’ve been banned so far were sort of asking for it. I hope that the banning stops, too, but that is predicated on a hope that the posters in question take their heads out of their ass and stop trolling and spamming.

Poster A calls the site owner’s content useless, and says that the site owner went off the deep end for swearing once two years ago in a rant about being the victim of theft. Poster B points out that Poster A is completely out of line, and being an enormous ass.
Poster A then tells the site owner that Poster B has picked on his posts repeatedly over the years, and that he should be banned for it, while also pointing out that he “won every spar” the two posters had (because that assertion doesn’t make Poster A at all insufferable).

I’m not sure who issued the warning, but my comment was in response to Satchel Price pretty much saying it is pointless to make a prediction on Andy Oliver’s debut tonight. My comment was a pretty common remark that was clearly not that offensive in my opinion. I was merely suggesting that the guy lighten up. Anyways, I have been warned and now feel that I really don’t know where the line is drawn in the sand. I obviously don’t want to cross it, but based on the recent warnings/bannings, I am afraid that anything I might say might be misinterpreted.

i like your prediction threads
you are almost 3-3, you nailed Strasburg and Stanton and were close tonight with Oliver.

+1
The prediction threads are a pretty fun distraction.
Doesn’t mean that the reply to Satchel wasn’t out of line, but I personally enjoy those threads.

Thanks!
I will try to keep it up when notable pitching prospects debut.
More fun with pitchers I think.

Umm
I was merely suggesting that the guy lighten up.
You can do this without being rude.
Instead of saying “take the stick out of your ass” like a rude person, you can be nice and say “Hey Satch, lighten up, it’s just for fun.”

you're right
I could have and should have handled things differently. I just didn’t think it was a big deal. Anyways, now I know, and going forward, I will be sure to be more respectful towards posers.

locking
I’m locking this thread.
By SB Nation standards, very few people have been banned here…fewer than 30 in the entire history of the website over five years. Some blogs ban that many in a month.
I am by nature a good-natured person, and sometimes people take advantage of that. I also am a strong believer in freedom of speech. But there is a certain level of decorum that must be maintained in order for this website to thrive. The rules are clear, simple, and easy to follow. All decisions on deletion and banning are mine and mine alone. I can’t make it any simpler than that.
