nice stats

I would think he’ll be in AA by May, right? Doesn’t seem like A+ is much of a challenge

Wrong

Unless you’re an executive or trainer with the Reading organization…

PHILADELPHIA - Phillies prospect Dominic Brown suffered a concussion in the second inning of Double-A Reading’s game vs. Richmond on Friday night. The right fielder collided with first baseman Ozzie Chavez while diving for a foul pop and hit his head. He left the game under his own power but did not return.

Mike Montgomery

Dealing through 4 innings so far;

4 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 0 ER (1 R), 6 Ks

He’s probably been the prospect I’ve been most intrigued with this early in the season. The increase in velocity and a big increase in strikeout rate is showing me that he could be a top 10 guy next year, especially if he can keep it up in AA

by brok515 on Apr 19, 2025 7:32 PM EDT reply actions

8 K's through 5 now.

sounds like his offspeed pitches are a big reason for the tick up in strikeouts. his breaking pitch coming into pro ball was a palm ball type pitch, but he’s throwing a more conventional curve now and has become more consistent with it. changeup is a nice pitch, too.

Joe Gardner

What’s this guy’s story? He’s a 3rd round pick — it sounds like last year people thought he might be a fast track ground ball reliever, but in his first three starts, he’s looking like a big time breakout starter. Anyone got a scoop?

by gogotabata on Apr 19, 2025 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions

All I know is that he has a very good sinker which tops out at 93-94 MPH and combines it with a slider and change. Not sure exactly how good those two pitches are and if he’s simply dominating with his fastball. Even among the loyal Tribe followers he’s flown under the radar a bit, so I’ll pass along the info as soon as more is known about the guy.

Obviously too early to say if Danks is truly growing into his power this year or if it’s just a SSS, but early signs are encouraging. 14 K in 47 AB is a little worrisome though.

Smoak and the BBs

Its getting insane. Is his eye that good, or is he getting pitched around?

14 BB in 12 games, only 5 K.

Either way, Chris Davis’ days are numbered. The Rangers have to put forth their best lineup if they want to be serious contenders in the AL West division. I think Smoak makes their lineup better as opposed to Davis. Agree/disagree?

JOSH THOLE > carlos santana

by Dewey Finn on Apr 20, 2025 1:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I think its both, too. He is super patient, though.

Smoak would definitely be an upgrade. He might end up their 3rd best hitter.

I don’t think Davis is a “bust” - though he was tremendously overrated as a prospect - but the Rangers can’t afford to let him learn on the job and make adjustments when they have another kid in Smoak who (I think) can produce at the MLB level right now.

Looks like well before right now

Davis is batting .222/.282/.333 w/ 0 HRs and 3 BBs to 13 Ks. That’s a 7.7% BB rate and a 36.1% K rate. He actually has a .348 BABIP, too, so this isn’t him hitting the ball right at fielders. He’s swinging at pitches outside the zone at a rate of 34.4% this year and 35.5% career (league average is 25-26%). He makes contact on pitches outside of the zone at a rate of 33.3% this year and 47.8% career (league average is 61-64%). Each year of his career he’s had a contact rate in the 60%‘s - and the average is around 80%. This is a kid with a bad eye who chases bad pitches and doesn’t make a lot of contact. That’s what he is. That’s what I thought he was as a prospect but I understand why people thought otherwise.

Things Davis does well:
-Pretty good defender at 1B
-Plus plus raw power

Things Davis does NOT do well:
-Hit for average
-Control the strikezone (Lay off bad pitches, NOT strikeout, Walk enough)
-Make enough contact/lay off enough pitches out of the zone to use much of his power.
-Have a good enough bat to be the starting 1B on a first division team.
-Have a good enough glove to play 3B regularly in the majors.

He’s a useful ballplayer but he has major flaws in his game that were hidden by deceptive minor league batting AVGs. He’s not a “bust” since he’s doing exactly what he’s always done - the only reason expectations were higher in some quarters was a misunderstanding of scouting reports and minor league performance - that’s not on Davis.

There isn’t some bright future around the corner for Chris Davis IMO. He can be better than this but I would be shocked if he’s hitting 40-50 HRs in his peak like some predicted. He reminds me of Josh Fields (of the White Sox and now Royals) in some ways.

I'm convinced

that Davis just had an absolutely incredible run in 2008 and came up too fast. He’s never going to walk much, but I think he could use some time. The Rangers have been very aggressive in promoting their top guys, and he probably wasn’t really ready.
