Brett Jackson
I’m mildly surprised Wil Myers made it on already. 68th best prospect in baseball?
Anyhow, vote here is to Brett Jackson. Tbh, I honestly believe he should’ve been on already. Heck, I’ll be honest … I think he should’ve been on 13 spots ago. 5-tool OF (although some rate his arm closer to average than plus) who should be a good to plus defensive OF. Projects to hit for power (in BA’s top 100, he was given the same power grade as Vitters, and whatever you may think about Vitters, Josh has power … ), with some projections of 25 HR+ power at his peak, but saying 20+ is probably more realistic. Good speed and runs the bases well. Had a terrific start … albeit in rookie and Low A. The Cubs will likely be aggressive with him, perhaps starting him in AA, and if not, they may look to move him up a level real early.
His one big issue is discipline, but the scouting reports indicate good strike zone awareness. Furthermore, there were positive reports about his ability to handle the bat and adjust. Certainly, some work is needed there, and he’ll never have elite discipline, but with a positive scouting report and good start to his career, I’m not as concerned about the issue at the moment.
I believe that for Moustakas/Davis/Vitters/Darnell to be ahead, their bats would have to be next level great, and I don’t buy it for any of them right now. Kalish is nice, but I believe Brett’s upside is better, is more likely to stick and be good at CF, and it’s not as if he trails Kalish’s polish by all that much. MArtin and Knapp are nice arms, but they are both far away. I have Brett ahead of Jay Jackson on my Cubs list. Leake is a mild thought, but I don’t believe Leake has the ceiling to push off someone as talented as Brett. Mier’s interesting and should get on soon … but he’s so far away.

Snyder for Top 100?
Anybody want to second this? I have an extremely hard time seeing him anywhere close to #100, probably more like 150-200 I think. Any other thoughts on him?
http://bullpenbanter.com
by gatling on Mar 2, 2026 12:26 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
He's a borderline top 100 guy
BA listed him as one of the five players who just missed cracking their top 100 list, so he certainly warrants some discussion at the back-end of the list. However, I think it is about 15-20 spots too early to be bringing his name up.
by BrosbeforeShaincoes on Mar 2, 2026 1:26 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Not for me
I’m with gatling, I don’t think he belongs anywhere near a top 100 list.
by jar75 on Mar 2, 2026 1:30 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
He's a first baseman with a mediocre bat
There’s not really much to elaborate on. I don’t believe he’ll provide the kind of offense to be more than a marginal play at 1B. First basemen continually get overrated.

Snyder
Defense is improving. Might not be typical 1B, but should hit .300 with 15+ HR. I really like his swing, uses the whole field. He should make an impact with the Orioles soon. After Darnell, Moustakas, Leake, Jackson, Mier, Martin and Knapp are on. I’d vote Snyder.

I'm all for taking floor into account more heavily than most
but just using John’s rankings as quick reference I’d prefer Eric Hosmer, Lars Anderson, Anthony Rizzo, Chris Marrero, Tommy Joseph, and probably Brandon Allen to Snyder with Ryan Strieby being pretty close to him. That’s just 1B we’re talking about here, there are plenty of arms I’d take before him too.

So his ceiling is James Loney?
Loney is a 1.5-2 win player, and I don’t think Snyder is all that likely to hit that ceiling.
by jar75 on Mar 2, 2026 2:56 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think that is a realistic projection, not a ceiling
Snyder projects as a bigger power guy, but maybe not quite the OBP numbers
by BrosbeforeShaincoes on Mar 2, 2026 5:28 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I'd be surprised if he turned out to be as good as Loney
I don’t think his defense is as good and I’m not sold that he can hit for more power. I agree with KG’s perfect world projection:
Perfect World Projection: Snyder’s a second-division starting first baseman at best.
That just isn’t a top 150 prospect for me.
by jar75 on Mar 2, 2026 5:52 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That is a ridiculous Perfect World Projection
by BrosbeforeShaincoes on Mar 2, 2026 7:15 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
A Perfect World Projection
has him as a second-division regular at best! Look, I’m not arguing that he should be on the list right now, but there is a lot to like in him. He’ll be only 23 this year, he’s shown good plate discipline, and scouts like the swing. Obviously there are some questions, but if there weren’t he would be a consensus top 100. Here is what Jason Grey wrote, after seeing him in the AFL:
Brandon Snyder, Baltimore Orioles: Don’t give up on the 13th overall pick in the 2005 draft just yet. He hit well at Double-A this year, but not so well at Triple-A. He can pick it at first, has a good approach and there’s some power there, though his swing tends to get a little long. He could eventually stick as a fringe starter on a bad team. I have a 45 on him on the 20-80 scouting scale (backup level), but others have a 50 (starter quality).
If other scouts have him as a 50, his perfect projection shouldn’t be a second-division regular.
by BrosbeforeShaincoes on Mar 2, 2026 7:56 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Actually, I think that write up is in tune with KG's
He could eventually stick as a fringe starter on a bad team.
He’s going to be a marginal starter at first base if his bat is good enough to play everyday, thus, a second division starter.
by jar75 on Mar 2, 2026 8:07 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
No!
If other scouts think that he is a 50, then his perfect world projection shouldn’t be a 45! It’s fine if KG thinks he’s a 45 (I disagree), but that’s his prerogative. However, if he is using the “Perfect World Projection” section as what he sees happening, he should entitle that section of his write-ups something like “KG’s outlook”. Because there is no way you can tell me that if everything falls into place Snyder is a 45, especially in the face of scouts who think he is more than that!
by BrosbeforeShaincoes on Mar 2, 2026 8:26 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
You're quibbling over a 5 point difference on the 20-80 scale?
The report called him a 45 and eventually a fringe starter on a bad team. A 50 would not be a significant upgrade from that. Just going by that write up, I’d put the grades like:
45: fringe starter on a bad team
50: starter on a bad team
55: fringe starter on a good team
60: starter on a good team
I think that’s a reasonable progression.
by jar75 on Mar 2, 2026 8:35 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Ya, but it could be more than that
If you have scouts projecting Snyder as a 50, it wouldn’t be surprising to have a perfect world projection of 55. Remember, this argument is about KG’s “Perfect World Projection”. I said it was ridiculous, and I find it hard for anyone to disagree with that. Snyder’s ceiling is a 45? No way. It is fine to believe that is what he will become (Jason Grey apparently does). However, I included Grey’s write-up to show that other talent-evaluators disagree. In the face of scouts projecting him as 50, how can you justify a “Perfect World Projection” having him as a 45? You can’t! That’s all I’m saying. You asked why I thought KG’s projection was ridiculous. There is my answer. I don’t understand how you can disagree with my logic.
by BrosbeforeShaincoes on Mar 2, 2026 9:13 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
And I think 50 fits in perfectly with the “second division starter” label. I just think his ceiling is limited, his floor isn’t all that high and that he belongs outside of a top 150 list.
by jar75 on Mar 2, 2026 9:18 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That's not how the scouting scale works
45= second-division regular
50= regular
That’s fine. We disagree on Brandon Snyder. However, regardless of your personal opinion on him, I don’t see how you can possible not see the flaw in KG’s “perfect world projection”
by BrosbeforeShaincoes on Mar 2, 2026 9:24 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't see the problem with the projection
I think one of the best thing KG does is accurately discount a guy for being a first baseman. Another source has pegged Snyder’s OFP in the 45-50 range with 50+ being the marker for average. I was under the impression that “Second Division” means the lower class of starters in the majors.
If all of the above is correct, I don’t see how calling his ceiling a second division starter is inaccurate. The first division starter would be significantly higher than 50, would he not?
by jar75 on Mar 2, 2026 9:39 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't understand how to present my argument in a fashion that you will understand

Not meant as an affront to you

by BrosbeforeShaincoes on Mar 2, 2026 9:47 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If we're talking OFP
they don’t typically adjust for position. So if we assume they’re talking a 50 hit 50 power kind of player that’s actually pretty bad for a 1B and would fit right in with the fringy reports.

I should add
if you’re going to throw out a Oriole prospect’s name, why aren’t we talking about Brandon Erbe? That guy gets so overlooked with Matusz, Arrieta, and previously Tillman(I like Erbe more than Britton, I’m not forgetting him) so there is some basis for it I guess, but Erbe makes my Top 100.

Snyder
What if he finished the season at Bowie and his stats stayed at the same pace?
That wouldve put him at around 23 HR, 1000 OPS, .6 BB/K. Even if he stayed at Bowie the whole year and his stats werent as good as they were, I believe people would be talking about him more.

Wouldn't make much difference to me
Hosmer and Anderson both had down years, so Snyder’s struggles in AAA aren’t what is putting him farther behind for me. His AA numbers aren’t sustainable, he’s not going to hit .342 in the majors and as soon as the average drops so does everything else including OPS. Anyone dropping him in their rankings because he didn’t dominate AAA at age 22 is overreacting. But I don’t think that is why people don’t consider Snyder a top 100 guy.

O's fan here...
and I’ve never been impressed w him. Seen him play several times, and has looked terrible defensively every time he’s played the field. But lots of reports that his defense is much improved. Still, I dont see him playing anywhere but 1B, and his bat seems questionable for 1B. However, Callis said he just missed the BA Top 100. He would be borderline top 150 for me.

In my head
I don’t really think of him as top 100. Feels more like a 125-175 type. I’m not sure he’s close to as good a bat as he was in AA (although I think he’s better than what he showed in AAA). I’d agree with you on waiting, but maybe enough people feel otherwise. Certainly fine to test him later, say, 85 and on.

Other guys to put on tester list (still behind the guys currently on it): Dan Duffy, Manny Banuelos, Trevor May, Austin Romine, Danny Espinosa, Austin Jackson, Brandon Allen, Mat Gamel, Travis D’Arnaud, Alex Liddi, Peter Bourjos. All possible top 100 guys not considered. That is not the exact order I have, but it is pretty close. Reckling would be #3 on that list.
Not top 100 on mine, but could also be considered soon: Drew Storen, Alex Avila, Nick Weglarz, Hak-Ju Lee, Noel Arguelles.
That would bring us to 115 guys I think. Anyone else that should be considered

Isaac Benjamin Davis
He was 4th in AA in ISO for players with more than 200 plate appearances, and he is younger than anyone who finished ahead of him (although Alvarez is only a month younger-Dopirak and Harvey are more than 3 years older, Streiby a year and a half). He even had a higher iso than Carter, and unlike Carter is supposedly ok as a first baseman, and even can play a little right, although he is slow. He continued to hit well this post-season. BA named him a top 10 AFL prospect (behind Alonso and Freeman, but they have been on for a while, and actually Ike made the AFL all-league team, not Alonso or Freeman). He was 62 on BA’s top 100 list, I believe, 57 on Project Prospects list.
Sure, Davis wasn’t great against lefties (although he progressed as the season went on) and he had some K issues. But striking out 29% of the time in AA doesn’t make him hopeless, any more than Micthell or Brett Jackson K’ing a ton in low A makes them hopeless. I get it, they are centerfield prospects, but Ike is getting a little bit short shrift for doing very well in AA. He had a high babip, but he also was stinging the ball.

This
Really, along with Smoak, the best numbers for a first round college first baseman in AA at 22 in the last 15 years. Smoak is better, but not by this much.
And he really was still just making the transition, he got better pretty much every month. I bet he hits 30+ HR this year. And I expect 35+ HR at his peak.
I actually like him better than any of the last 20 guys to be voted on the list.
