Chris Davis vs. Alex Gordon
Two AAAA guys. I currently have Alex Gordon on my roster in an AL dynesty league. I have an opportunity to trade him for Chris Davis. I am sitting with Russell Branyon as my 1B and have no 1B in my minor league system. Gordon only qualifies in LF now but I already have Delmon Young there and it seems easier to get a LF anyway.
Davis is 24 and Gordon is 26. I understand Davis may need to be traded to have another major league opportunity.
My question is: which of these guys have abetter chance at making it in the major leagues?

Alex Gordon.
Gordon just needs to translate his skills from the minor leagues to the major leagues. That may never happen, but we know hes got serious talent in there somewhere.
Chris Davis has major flaws that are unlikely to be corrected. He may hit 30-40 homers someday, but he’ll hit .210 to do it.

Davis: Think Mark Reynolds, but MORE K’s. I don’t think he’ll ever cut the K’s enough to be a big league regular.

Does anyone actually look at numbers before they talk?
Mark Reynolds’ career K% is higher than Davis has ever put up at any stop, in any part of any season in his career.

I would hardly call Gordon a AAAA guy
His year 24 season he put up a 109 ops+, and has shown glimpses of greater performance between injuries and the position change. I truly believe he is still an above average player.
Plus hes now got 3B and OF eligibility.

I think Gordon's
skills are more refined at this point but I think it comes down to need. Gordon will be an OF on the Royals and maybe a 3B on another team while Davis will be a 1B or a 3B. As things stand now, I prefer Gordon for ‘11 but if Gordon isn’t moved and stays in the OF his value goes down a lot imo and Davis could leapfrog him with his infield eligibility if he gets the playing time.

Waiver Wire
Both had a good 1/2 season in the bigs, but both have noticeable declines since. Gordon has a better chance to actually get big league PT, but Davis has a better chance of producing bigger numbers both next year and eventually.
I’d guess there’s something better on the Waiver Wire than either though. Just pick up a Colorado utility guy…

Agree Davis might yet produce
Davis is a real bright guy, knows he needs to cut down on the K’s to succeed, and best of all, doesn’t sulk when he gets sent down because the adjustments aren’t working. He’s also more likely to be traded than Gordon so if the 1B really helps keep Davis.

I'm also a Davis owner
I took over a dynasty league team with him on my 30-man AL roster. I inquired about Gordon as well, but the other manager was acting as if Gordon IS a good player currently. This actually sounds like a trade to shift pieces more than gain value. The key to winning dynasty leagues is to simply have at bats at every position. If this deal helps you do that, then it’s a good move.

Alex Gordon
Gordon for sure. 3B and OF eligibilities will be key for you, too.

If Gordon stays in KC...
he’ll lose 3B eligibility and his numbers as a OF leave a lot to be desired.

I think it's too early to call either a AAAA guy
But you also have to remember that Davis DID already have a very productive partial season in the majors. You can argue that pitchers learned to work around him, but I think it’s still something to keep in mind as he made adjustments through the minors, now it’s just that last step. I think his potential is greater if he figures it out. I think to do that, he’ll need to cut down on Ks, I think he can do it enough to K only 160-170 times in a full season while belting 30+ homers, but he needs another opportunity, and some time in the minors first wouldn’t hurt.

Gordon because he has more "versatility" and speed
but now that I looked closer at the numbers, they are fairly comparable.

Thanks
I appreciate the feedback. I like both players but expect to move forward keeping Gordon. I understand it is still too early to call either a AAAA guy but both look like they only have one more chance with their current organizations. Thanks again everyone!
