Colorado Rockies Organization Discussion
I am now working on the New York Yankees, to be followed by the Colorado Rockies, Tampa Bay Rays, Cincinnati Reds, and Detroit Tigers. Use this thread to discuss the Colorado Rockies system, focusing on any overlooked or sleeperish type players.

Whats the latest on Kyle Parker?
What is the process that will happen after the Bowl Season is finished? Is he a Dec 2010 grad?
I understand he cannot play baseball for Clemson in the spring, so what happens. In January, does he officially become Rox property?
Sorry, I just don’t understand the process that made his draft status a little different than others.
Why did he get to play football but Zach Lee was not allowed to?
The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.

Parker
The contract he signed with the Rockies allowed for him to return to Clemson to play football since he was entering his football sophmore season. Something about when he actually enrolled in the school. Regardless, Parker has a deadline with the Rockies to inform them if he wants to go back for another year of the gridiron. If he chooses to, he would leave his A ball team (likely Asheville) when football starts. If he does go this route, he will have to give back a specified amount of his signing bonus. Also, if he had gotten hurt this year, he would have had to give back some of the bonus.
Money is a powerful motivator, he won’t go back to Clemson. He will likely start the year at Asheville and let his football dreams pass.

Money isn't always king, though.
Just ask Cliff Lee. We’ll see what Parker does when he makes his choice.

as it turns out
Cliff Lee didnt leave quite that much on the table when he signed, as originally thought

All the Clemson papers have made it known that it's a foregone conclusion
And they’re coming from sources close to Parker (likely his father).

As someone who doesn't follow football
I didn’t even realize he still had eligibility after this year. Given his history of choosing football over baseball, I don’t think it’s a foregone conclusion.

Chris Nelson
Definitely not “overlooked/sleeperish” but probably someone who is going to be graded with a wide variance. He is getting a bit older and has had injury problems, but I’d rather take my chances on a SS that can play well when healthy instead of a huge question mark like Dee Gordon. I feel like injuries concerns are over-emphasized, especially with major league ready prospects. I’d take a 120 game SS that is very good with a cheap back up defensive SS, over a 150+ game SS that barely projects to be any better than that cheap back up.

I realize he might be moved to 2B
But it doesn’t seem like that is Nelson’s fault.

Does Greg Reynolds even make the list?

Couple of Pioneer leaguers worth noting
OFs Rafael Ortega and Chris Dickerson. I like Ortega a little better because he has good reports on his defense and he’s a little faster. Dickerson sounds like an all bat LF.

Tyler Matzek was getting so overrated last year that he's become underrated
It’s nice to see some Blackmon love, but I see Rosario being underrated in some parts.
Some other things to think about: perhaps Friedrich’s off year was good for him, Chad Bettis’s transition to a starting role, and Arenado’s potential. Also, I believe Nelson is starting to get overrated. Alberto Campos really intrigues me.
The 2010 Colorado Rockies: We may have lost the battle, but not the war. It ain't over till it's over.

Matzek
I know that the reports weren’t great for him this year, I think the last time Mike Newman saw him he was in the mid 80’s with the fastball. I hadn’t heard anything about him really until this tidbit in a KLaw chat a couple of weeks ago:
Craig (Boulder)
What’s Tyler Matzek’s ceiling and when would you expect to see his debut with the Rockies?
KLaw (2:13 PM)
I still think he’s a potential number one starter, but the Rockies tinkered with his mechanics this year, which makes no sense to me at all since his arm worked extremely well in high school. Get him back to how he was pitching in 2009 and he’ll be back on track.
Maybe it’s just the fantasy owner in me, but hopefully KLaw is right here. Definitely some extra reason for optimism I think.

Having seen Matzek 3x in 2010....
I agree with Law completely. The first time I saw Matzek, he worked his fastball up to 94 MPH. I saw him a final time on the final day of the regular season and he just didn’t seem like himself. An offseason to clear his head and get back to basics might do him wonders. However, from speaking to scouts, Matzek still has some personality traits which will need close monitoring.

Uncorroborated reports out of instructs in Arizona had him back up to that working 94-ish range
The Rockies were trying to get him to throw more over the top to generate more GB’s in Asheville because what works in HS in California might not work so well in Coors Field. I know the NL’s the inferior league, but it’s not that inferior. Law’s right, though, in that it does no good to anybody if the instruction doesn’t catch on.

Nolan Arenado
I’m glad that Arenado is receiving some well-received pub after a monster season in the Sally. Not sure where he winds up defensively, but there’s quite a bit of thunder i that bat.

Thunder sure...
but I think he lacks the lightning, bat speed, needed as he advances.

Michael Mckenry
Decent offensive numbers. Not sure about his defense behind the plate.

I gotta think
Blackmon should crack your top 5 with scouts and teams really targeting the toolsy outfielder. Also, Casey Weathers was protected on the 40-man roster and actually pitched pretty well since coming back from his injury.
