Dynasty League Advice
I've been offered Drabek, Moore(Matt), Davis(Wade), Headley and the 5th pick in the 2nd round of the upcoming draft(mostly guys from this past draft and IFA) for Latos, Stanton and Knapp. I'm giving up the highest ceiling player in the trade by far, but I get back 3 high ceiling pitching prospects and I should be able to get a pretty good prospect in the 2nd round too. Any thoughts on the deal??

I'm not a big fan of commenting without more info,
but I prefer keeping the upside guys rather than trading for mediocre players plus 2 good pitching prospects. I’m assuming Moore is Adam Moore of the Mariners. Realistically, who’ll be available at the 5th pick in the second round of the minor league draft?
That being said, I prefer Davis to Latos (I’m not sold on Latos’s maturity or ability to stay healthy). I prefer stanton to both headley, moore, and the 2nd round pick. Finally, I like Drabek more than Knapp, though both could end up anywhere between 2-4 in a rotation depending on how they develop.
Stanton’s potential of being a superstar trumps the extras you’d receive. i don’t peg anyone you’re being offered as a superstar or with superstar potential… It’s like trading a bunch of good players for a could of good players plus a superstar.

Headley isn't a mediocre player
Two years ago he was a five-star prospect. He was solid in MLB last year.
Valuing Stanton over Headley by a large margin is SNTS at its finest.

It's not that I value Stanton over Headley,
I’ve just never been a Headley fan. I always thought he would be an average player, meanwhile, not that I like Stanton, I believe that he’s got superstar potential with a floor of for a .240 30-35 hr 90-110 guy which is pretty much adam dunn

Really?
Valuing Stanton over Headley by a large margin is SNTS at its finest.
Headley was barely a top 50 guy when he was Stanton’s age/experience. Stanton is pretty much a consensus top 5 guy. Headley has turned into a decent player, but when you factor in home parks, this isn’t close at all - and it has NOTHING to do with SNTS. More like common sense.

Headley has been good in MLB.
His floor is that he stays what he is, and his ceiling is a 900 OPS.
Stanton’s floor is bust. His ceiling is very high but he is less likely to get there.
if Stanton puts up a stat line like Headley’s 2009 in 2011, he will be on a fine career trajectory - and people will start saying they would take the latest A prospect over him. And the cycle will be complete.

Also...barely a top 50 guy? Not according to Sickels.
1) Chase Headley, 3B, Grade B+
.305/.383/.556 in Triple-A, .261/.330/.455 in the majors. Still making some adjustments but he’s going to be a good one.
From top 50 hitters in May 2008:
12) Chase Headley 3B, San Diego Padres: .297/.363/.520 in Triple-A.
And from earlier that year:
Chase Headley, 3B, Grade B+ (should this be A-?)
Soooo…Stanton was a slightly better prospect than Headley, yes. Stanton is currently an A-. Headley was a B+, on the border of A-. Headley has been productive in MLB and appears to be en route to being an impact hitter and living up to his potential. (Don’t forget that Headley’s numbers are hurt by his home park.)
Stanton on the other hand has done nada in MLB. He’s done nada in AAA. He struggled in AA. Even his supporters admit he’s a big bust risk.
Great prospect, yes. Significantly more valuable than Chase Headley, no.

The thing that does it for me,
is Stanton’s age and ranking versus that of Headley’s production. At worst, Stanton becomes Headley right now. Personally, I’ve never been a Headley fan. I just don’t see him getting too much better, and unfortunately the park factor affects Headley in fantasy baseball, which is what we’re talking about. If I’m trading Stanton, I’m trading him plus others for a difference maker on my team NOW.
Headley just isn’t superstar material. He’s looking league average right now (or slightly above), but he doesn’t have the superstar in the making quotient. He’s a solid regular, but I value the potential of Stanton more in fantasy baseball.

OMG
Top 50 2008? When Headley was 24? Yeah, when Headley was 24 he was not that much worse of a prospect than Stanton at 20. Ya got me dude, ya got me.
Yes, Stanton has done nada in MLB. But I have yet to see Headley “break out” in any way. He’s barely above replacement level. Ooooo… such a great player!
Fact is, Stanton at 20 is a SIGNIFICANTLY better player/prospect than Headley was at 20. THAT is what I was saying. But obviously you need some reading comprehension lessons.
Also -
(Don’t forget that Headley’s numbers are hurt by his home park.)
Uh, I did mention that as a negative for Headley. We are talking fantasy after all, so it should be a negative.

I'd still rather have latos, stanton, and knapp

With prospects I usually go quantity, assuming the quality is comprable
Three nice arms, good chance one or two pans out. The draft pick will add another solid prospect. And Headley has been forgotten about, but the dude can hit. A breakout in 2010 would not surprise me.
I’m not a big fan of Knapp. Latos is great but I can’t say he’s that far ahead of Davis imo. And Stanton, for all the upside, is a bust risk.

seems in latos and stanton you are giving up the best 2 players in the deal

Exactly
Never give up the best player in the deal, unless you are getting blown away by an offer. This doesn’t qualify as being “blown away”.

I like...
W. Davis and Moore a LOT, but out of the prospects offered only Davis has a chance to be a true impac t player. Chase Headley is ok, average Roto Player at best…if you can swap him for a better player I might pull the trigger.
Although I voted for the Latos/Stanton side, only because I believe in Mr. Latos, and Stanton should garner more players than offered.

I ended up doing this deal instead
Hicks, Moore, Drabek, Headley and a 2nd for Stanton, Knapp, Marte and a 3rd.

no offense,
but the other deal you were given looks better to me than this deal. You’re assuming Hicks develops into the hitter everyone expects him to (the same can be said for stanton). Good luck with your team…

Except I didn't give up Latos
So the separation between Stanton and Hicks is made up with Drabek and Moore, and I get Headley and a 2nd. Knapp, Marte and the 3rd are just parts to me.

it's pretty even
but headley wont’ be relevant at petco (i have him too and he sucks balls for me.
latos is great for the same reason. and you want to keep stanton. so i’d say no
