Ackley or Chapman?
This question is fantasy related, as I have the #2 pick in a keeper league where Stras will obviously go #1. I am having a hard time deciding between Ackley and Chapman, who i have ahead of other available candidates like lyles, scheppers, montgomery, matzek, etc. Is it just Ackley higher floor lower ceiling than Chapman or is there anymore too it. If Ackley were able to play 2B i think i would bite for sure, but his bat at 1B has me wondering. I would post my team, but the point is I just want the best overall player of the 2, regardless of needs. Thoughts?

no brainer
ackley. if chapman was right handed he would have no more talent or polish then jeremy jeffress and probably no less expierience with the herb. chapman is coveted by mlb teams because lefties with that kind of fastball are rare. if he was right handed he would still have rare velocity but would not be unique in his quality as a pitching prospect. ackley as a 1b would be odd because there is no one to compare him to. i would imagine john olerud with 30 sb. witch i think would be way more valuable than ant 1b in the minors including smoak.

I pick pitcher over...
positional player when on common ground almost every time in reality. Chapman has much more upside imo as well.

ditto
Chapman might be…
Ackely will be…
All the difference in the world.

You know what would suck...
if Chapman becomes an ace and Ackley becomes a bust. You can’t say any prospect will be.

I had the #2 pick in a draft this year
Took Ackley.
It’s a slam dunk for me. One is a polished hitter with a very high floor and a Sizemore-esque ceiling. The other is a Cuban IFA. Much riskier.

Ackley is the clear choice for fantasy purposes in my opinion
I have Chapman slightly above him on my normal top 100, though.

Curious.
What don’t you like about Ackley? Because I can’t for any reason think that Chapman is a better prospect.
If it’s so slight that it doesn’t matter, then disregard.

Its pretty slight...
But I don’t dislike Ackley - like him a ton. In fact, I like them both a ton. I have Chapman #11 and Ackley #15.
Still a work in progress though.

It depends
Does your league have a specific CF spot? If it doesn’t and you don’t think Ackley is a second baseman, Chapman becomes a bit more interesting.
I like Ackley a lot and I have him about 10 spots higher than Chapman, but I’m not sure if he’ll be a better fantasy asset if he’s simply listed as OF.

Better put,
Ackley at 2B yes, Ackley at OF no.
Chapman has the makings of an ace, but he’s not as definitive as Ackley is likely to make it to the MLB. It all depends on whether or not you believe Ackley will stay at 2b. I think Chapman will be a productive SP or RP in the MLB…

Yeah, If Ackley plays CF or 2B then he is a definite yes
If he plays 1B then… probably not

If Ackley is a 1B,
then Chapman easily

2b looking good

He’s doing good SO FAR at 2b….he’s blocked in the OF so the Mariners really want this 2b thing to work so he can be up sooner.
And while some of us might think he won’t stick there…his college coach (you know, the one guy who really knows what Ackley can and can’t do) thinks he will be fantastic at 2b.

Seems like a standard coach talking point
Did you expect him to say “Ackley gargles hog at 2B. He should play the outfield. And he’s an ugly bastard.”

A little honesty would be appreciated, yes. =)

well
as his coach, if he thought Ackley sucked at 2b, I think he would have kept quiet and not gone out of his way to say how great he’d be at second.

Chapman over almost all other pitching prospects?
Yes, other than Stras and Matusz (and perhaps Feliz), I think I’d take Chapman over pretty much any other pitching prospect: Hellickson, Perez, Davis, Friedrich, Moore, Drabek, Lyles, Mejia, and Kelly. Yes, there are safer choices. But Chapman is the poster child for “high risk, super high reward.” My 2 cents.

If Ackley is as good of an athlete
as they say he is, then I think 2B shouldn’t be too bad for him. He played SS in high school and then 1B/CF in college, following a career line a lot like Skip Schumaker for the Cardinals who also just switched to 2B. I’m not saying he will transition to second as easily, but there is a relatively recent example of how this move could work out. It really comes down to how well he turns the two and how his coaches are.

I struggle this question as well
Do you take the risk and upside of Chapman or the safety of Ackley? My vote is for Ackley as I think Chapman has more risk than upside at this point. Regarding Ackley, I keep reading that he could be a future batting champ. What kind of numbers (average, power, speed) can we expect during his peak years? Will they match Sizemore or bit a bit different?

Ackley
If he sticks at 2nd he will be an elite fantasy bat there and IMO that is much more likely to happen than Chapman becoming an elite starter.

My take
Ackley definitely has the higher floor no question although I believe Chapman has the higher ceiling but that ceiling comes with extreme risk as well, Ackley much less so. There are so many unknowns about Chapman it would be tough to recommend him over Ackley, but arent all prospects a crapshoot. I would probably base this selection on the current foundation of your team. If you are in desperate need of a bat take Ackley if a pitcher take Chapman. Now if your foundation is equal than it comes down to your philosophy. If your a gambler take Chapman if your more conservative take Ackley.

Got one, want the other
I missed a deadline in which would have been able to get Chapman with a much lower pick than I thought I could get him with. It made me sick to think about it. I LOVE the guy. That being said, I would not trade Ackley for him - I’d rather have the surer thing. (Note, I do not say sure thing, other than being a great movie, there is no sure thing.)
