Guys perhaps worth another look into

Just tossing some names out there for ya John to at least give a second look at:

Dallas Buck
Tyler Cline
Kevin Coddington
Enerio Del Rosario
Ezequiel Infante
Harold “Jacob” Johnson
Matt Klinker
Alex Oliveras
Josh Ravin
Dave Sappelt
Byron Wiley

The biggest guy from that group is Matt Klinker. Has good stuff, working 90-92 and hits 93-94 throughout most games, also has solid secondary stuff and outstanding numbers in 2009 between A+-AAA.

I would actually find Dallas Buck more interesting than Dorn. Though that may just be me.

list

OK, looking at the other guys suggested, Wiley, Rosario, and Klinker look the most interesting, so here is 40. I need to cut this back to 37 if possible. Who would you cut?

You could probably get away with dropping Horst.

3 to drop

I would think it has to come from three of these guys:

Sean Henry - Looks like a 5th outfielder. Perhaps a guy who gets a chance somewhere else, but he isn’t going to find one with the Reds unfortunately. Nothing really stands out with him, but he isn’t bad at anything either.

The relievers - Viola is old and despite good stuff has gotten beaten up pretty well each of the last two seasons. Enerio Del Rosario is a groundball machine, but probably profiles as a 6th, maybe 7th inning reliever. Alexander Smit has meh stuff , but has had solid numbers.

Tucker Barnhart - No real experience to go on. A bit undersized, though he is still young enough to grow. Said to have decent power and a good arm. Still, his biggest asset coming out of HS seemed to be that he was a baseball rat who was very smart rather than an emphasis on his baseball skills themselves.

Just my suggestions.

Barnhardt vs. other 2009 draft picks + relievers

I would rank Barnhart in the ballpark of Mark Fleury, and above 2009 picks drafted 5th or lower (like Tuttle(5), Silva(8), and Pearl(9).) Barnhart fell in the draft because of his committment to Georgia Tech, yet was rated as 3-5th round talent and paid 4th round signing bonus money.

I agree on the relievers. I’d put Viola, Valiquette, and Smit in the same group, and think any of them could be left out of the top 37. The Reds didn’t protect Smit on the 40-man roster this year (but did later re-sign him on a minor league deal.)

Barnhart vs 2009 picks

No way would I put Barnhart ahead of Tuttle, Silva or Jacob Johnson from the 2009 draft. Tuttle and Johnson both had good scouting reports coming out of high school and flat out dominated the GCL. Silva is a guy who has a good swing though he may need to shorten it up some, but showed good power, a good walk rate and has above average speed.

I'd put Barnhart slightly over Johnson personally.

There’s good upside, but when it comes to the pro numbers part, then yeah, Johnson deserves the writeup more.

You are so wrong about Barnhardt, Sean Henry

Doug, Barnhardt is awesome and has so many tools that have great potential to develop. He has big time upgrade.

As for your comments on Sean Henry: Why doesn’t he have a future with the Reds? That’s a strong statement you made against Sean Henry and I kind of noticed that with this player you consistently do that and I cannot find where there is any justification. Sean Henry just came off a AA season where he had the highest stolen bases on the team. 23 if I am not mistaken. Surely that rings a bell in your mind? And if he had that many stolen bases, that tells me he is FAST. I went further and found out he can also hit. An outfielder needs to know how to hit and Sean Henry is doing that too. So, why are you disrespecting Sean Henry? Inquiring minds want to know.

Dave from Louisville said you had a mancrush on Danny Dorn. I see John Sickels did not agree with you on removing Sean Henry from the list, but took your boy Danny Dorn. That must have been like a slap in your face.

There is an old saying: “Better to keep your mouth closed and to be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt”. Maybe you should compare notes with John Sickels. Maybe you have your players confused.

Oh, by the way, Sean Henry was honored in is home town in San Francisco on Martin Luther King day for his humanitarian efforts and overcoming his own obstacles in baseball as a young black slugger.

john

On a whole different topic. You did the Royals awhile ago, what grade would you go with Arguelles. I posted it on the KC page, but you probably didnt see it, it was so long ago.

As for a sleeper for the Reds, what about Juan Carlos Sulbaran, numbers arent great, but has a live arm and if you love Ks, hes got plenty of them. Also was only 19 all season, so he can mature still.

Thanks and keep up the good work.

Arguelles

Arguelles is in the “stragglers” group that I will write up Friday night.

i ended up keeping Barnhart but dropping Dorn…dorn is closer to the majors of course but barnhart is more interesting from a developmental perspective.

Nah

Just a regular crush. Dorn is a guy who if given a chance can give you 400 PA a year against RHP and mash. That is more valuable than most relievers will give you.

by dougdirt on Jan 14, 2026 7:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Dorn

I agree wholeheartedly. I think he could produce at least at a Brian Daubach-type level while playing DH/1B/LF.

by GregD on Jan 14, 2026 8:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Dorn needs to be in the AL

I was really hoping he would get a chance to play in the AL as a result of the rule V draft. It didn’t happen which is unfortunate for Dorn. I think that Daubach is a good comparison and he could have several years of success over there if given a chance.
