Community Projection: Jay Bruce

It's time to start up the Community Projections again. We will concentrate on "not a rookie" type players, young guys with a year or so of major league experience. We will begin with Jay Bruce of Cincinnati.

For Jay Bruce, project the following numbers:

Games
At-bats
Hits
Batting average (make sure the math works)
Runs scored
Doubles
Triples
Homers
RBI
Walks
Strikeouts
Steals
Caught Stealing

Please do it in that order as it makes the spreadsheet data entry a lot easier for me.
One projection per person.

Additional Information
.286/.349/.482 is what his slash line would work out to. I think this is a pretty safe prediction, he could break out and hit much higher or could slump and be a lot worse. I do think his strikezone judgement will improve this year though

"If you hit .440 with 20 bombs, you don't have to do s---. You don't have to bring a glove to practice, just hit and leave whenever you want. You can bring a 40 and smoke a cigarette and call me from the parking lot asking me what time the game is, and I'll tell you. You can even say 'F--- you, Steve!' Actually, don't say that, that wouldn't be very nice." -Steve Friend, Head Coach, Chabot College Gladiators Baseball

K/BB

wow - that’s a much worse K/BB ratio than everybody else (including myself) suspects! A .265 AVG also seems a little low (though I could see mid-270s).

by rmarx01 on Mar 5, 2026 10:36 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes

It is. I think I over estimated a little bit, but I basically expect a season similar to his June-August numbers, with a little higher average. I predict that, like most of last season, he will struggle to find success, which will cause him to be a very free swinger. I think the numbers should improve over the course of a season though.

huh?

Only 123 G and 18 HR? Are you projecting he gets hurt?

by rmarx01 on Mar 5, 2026 10:37 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I’m being realistic.

by jonk1982 on Mar 5, 2026 6:23 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Realistic?

But you are saying that a guy who has never walked more than 47 times in a minor league career will manage to walk 53 times in a sophomore season in the bigs? You are also predicting a 1.75:1 K:BB rate to for a guy who’s best rate has been 2.4:1 (twice)? I am confused…

by gore51 on Mar 5, 2026 7:09 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah, that’s crazy. Imagine, a guy who has walked 47 times once might walk 53 times in the future! This projection was just my opinion. This is for fun, I thought? Sorry that I’m not predicting 30-odd homers and and 160 games. This isn’t a bad projection for him….slugging over .500. It’s not like I put up some really big outlier like .300 OBP/.400 SLG.

by jonk1982 on Mar 5, 2026 7:26 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I guess...

but when he did walk 47 times, he did it with 521 AB, not 429. I’m just saying. I like most of your projection line, better than others (I like shooting low and having people eclipse my expectations) I’m just saying that a few things just didn’t add up to me.

by gore51 on Mar 5, 2026 7:32 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I spent literally a minute on it. I probably didn’t think it through quite enough.

"Daryl (Morey, the Rockets general manager) and I were talking this morning. We both discussed how great Tracy is in the playoffs. There's very few people who have the ability to step up their games in the playoffs and he does. So we're not looking to run away from Tracy." - Houston Rockets Owner, Leslie Alexander
