Arizona Diamondbacks Organization Discussion
I am currently working on the New York Yankees. The next team on the list is the Arizona Diamondbacks, to be followed by the Detroit Tigers.
Use this thread to discuss Diamondbacks prospects. Who do you like as sleepers in this system?

Kevin Mulvey
He isn’t exactly a sleeper, but I am curious about what you think of him. I don’t know how credible you think the guys at Project Prospect are, but they think he could be a guy who puts up several years of high 3 ERAs in his peak, which I’m guessing they don’t think is too far away. They have him as the 22nd overall pitching prospect and the 9th best prospect in the NL West (one behind Jarrod Parker - the only D-Back ahead of Mulvey). I’m sure many people have nearly forgotten about Mulvey. You had him as a B- guy last year, and I wonder if he has done much to lower his status. He did pretty bad in the majors, but put up a similar line to the previous year in the minors where he spent most of his time.

I'd have to say
That ‘09 wasn’t a good year for him. His AAA numbers were essentially stagnant overall (ERA worsened slightly, FIP bettered slightly, K-Rate dropped, BB-Rate rose, HR-rate dropped), and the major-league cameo was bad. Currently behind a feast of guys for the #4/#5 rotation spots, like Ian Kennedy, who is likely going to be handed the #4 on a silver platter, and then for the #5 I’d put Mulvey somewhere in between Billy Buckner, Bryan Augenstein, Rodrigo Lopez, and Cesar Valdez (in no particular order, although with Buckner the front-runner amongst them). When Webb’s deal runs out after this season and he undoubtedly flees for money, there’ll be another spot open, and then again in 2012 when Edwin Jackson, a Scott Boras client, likely departs. But Jarrod Parker will take one of those (injuries willing), so Mulvey’s got some work to do.

All about the 2009 draft here
Am I the only one who thinks they may have really botched this draft? Borchering has lots of upside with the bat but isn’t much defensively and he didn’t look nearly as polished as expected. Pollock looks like a tweener/fourth outfielder already. Owings looks like Charlie Culberson v2.0 to me. Davidson is just really raw.
At least Marc Krauss looks interesting.

I don't think it was that bad
Borchering’s defense is a bit of a question mark, but he’s supposedly to have a very good bat. I like Krauss a lot even if he doesn’t have much defensive value and Ryan Wheeler was a nice pick. They may not have selected an elite talent, but I thought their draft was solid.

Borchering's regular season wasn't great
But his playoff line was a lot better. Hard to make any judgments on that limited time. Wheeler was a nice grab, as is pretty much anybody who walks more than they strike out in their first pro season, and Goldschmidt/Daniel Taylor put up good numbers, although they needed to with their ages/leagues. Heck, of all those guys, I’m least excited about Krauss, since his defense is so horrendous. Looking at his defensive metrics shows the carnage - in just 32 games one stat a buddy of mine found had him at -5 runs from his defense. If you have to slide Krauss to first (where we still don’t know if he’d pass defensively), I’ll take Wheeler over him. He belongs on a team with a DH, frankly, and Arizona is not one of them. I see him as near the top of the team’s trading chips.

I don't know about botched
But I didn’t particularly like their picks. Probably a consequence of having so many picks and having to fit them all in a draft budget.

it wasn't the budget
I’ll buy Borchering (although I would have taken Mier at that spot in a heartbeat), but Owings and Davidson both stand out as selections that should have been regretted about 10 minutes after they were made - and both were prep draftees.

I don't see how you can say
That we should/do regret Owings. Davidson had a crappy year but he’s got power, and was 18.

yes
the word here in AZ is AJ Pollock was a money saving pick because they knew they’d have to open their wallets when Borchering fell to them.
I remember being excited when Kyle Gibson, Shelby Miller, Jo Mier, Jared Mitchell, etc dropped to them. We could have Borchering and an elite guy! Then when drafted Pollock and everyone one was like what the f-ck

We also
Were linked to Pollock forever. We really liked the guy.

unfortunately
yes, i even remember Baseball America accurately having us draft him months before the draft.
Again, if the Dbacks picked him in the supplemental first round I wouldn’t have much of a problem, but at #17 you make an impact pick, not someone who probably profiles as a #4 OFer.
Personally I would have taken Gibson, who looks like another Scherzer to me. Miller is also another arm that looks great. If they really wanted to go the college OFer route then Mitchell is MUCH better at pretty much everything than Pollock

ESPN even had us accurately taking him and Borchering
So the love was definitely there. For one, the DBacks profile him as a starting CF for whatever reasons they have. And Gibson looks exactly like Scherzer, even down to the school and injuries at Mizzou. If the meds on his stress fracture check out fine, the Twins got a heist, but perhaps we were concerned? I dono, mere speculation.
We have an allergy to HS arms, so Miller was unlikely. Jarrod Parker has been the only notable exception (which makes me wonder why we don’t do it more often, so I suppose I agree with you), unless you go back to Brett Anderson, although he was a second rounder I believe (may have been a sandwich guy).
Pollock is probably a little safer than the toolsy Mitchell (we went for toolsy later with Broxton), and should (but has not yet) hit for better contact. Also, Pollock is just learning how to play the outfield, so expect some improvement, since he has the speed to make it in CF.

My two sleepers are both from Mid-A
Renaldo Navarro and Rossmel Perez. Both are great defenders at positions where defense is key. Navarro just turned 20 on the 22nd, and while I saw him in top-10 lists last year, the new prospect wave and a crappy offensive season at South Bend have him nowhere to be found. If he can learn to take a walk, his defense will carry him to the majors. Perez is also extremely young, but he doesn’t strike out much. He just needs to provide any semblance of power in his bat and gain more experience calling games. Already a good receiver with footwork and a throwing arm to boot. I also like Daniel Taylor, whose 11.17 K/9 and 2.89 BB/9 are pretty darned good. Also is a lefty, something we have basically none of. BABIP screwed him a bit in ’09.

20-year-old plus-defending catchers
Are always really really nice to have. :)

Ryan Wheeler, steal of the 2009 draft?
Holy cow this guy looks like he could be the steal of the draft. His teamate Angelo Songo was supose to be the prize of Loyola Marymount. Wheeler was supose to have trouble handeling the wood, well based on his numbers at short season, and his 8 game stint in low A, I’d say he’s absolutely someone worth watching. It will be curious too see if he goes to high A or jumps right to AA out of spring trainging.

We had a couple of really good late-round picks too
Dan Taylor was good at Yakima from the 29th round. Keith Cantwell had video-game metrics from the 40th round. Age is a concern, but you’re not going to get concern-free guys at those rounds (and age worries are far better than crappy-production worries).
