most likely, maybe b- for those that don’t believe in his power development

I'd B- him

He’s got the tools, and the defense, but not totally sold on his power, although I think the breakout was predominantly legit and he’s not just a High Desert Mirage.

Saw a couple names a few months back I was hoping someone included in their analysis of the system.

Tim Kennelly - C
Aaron Altherr - OF

Kennelly probably doesn’t have the power to be productive unless he is pretty good behind the plate (which doesn’t sound like he is) and Altherr (who I do see on the list) doesn’t have much to look at yet but his size made me keep him in mind.

Also curious to hear some reports on Domingo Santana assuming he makes it in people’s books.

Altherr

from Glendale here in AZ. He wasn’t on the radar (basketball was #1) until his senior year and I got to watch him a few times.

Tall, lanky, gawky kid. Probably 6’5" and rail thin. Lots of projection though, once he grows into that body. Athletic and had DI basketball offers.

From the same draft I would compare him to Trayce Thompson as far as build, rawness, projection

Steve Susdorf

I think Susdorf deserves a mention. He had a tough time in his AA call-up this year, but has hit at every level previous to this. It’s tough to rank a guy who lacks speed and is borderline in the power department, but as anyone who watched the ’08 CWS knows, his intangibles are off the charts. And in Philadelphia, they love those kinds of intangibles.

Wow

The top end has really taken a hit. Trevor May is their #2 prospect now, right? Close to it if not.

John Manuel from BA

said the top 4 should be Brown>Gose>May>Valle. He rated Aumont at 6 and Gillies 8 if I remember correctly.

Manuel

here is what he said-from Stark article over at ESPN:

“If I had to redo my top 10, Brown would obviously be 1,” Manuel said. “But with 2-3-4 gone, I might skip Anthony Gose up to [No.] 2, have Trevor May 3, Valle 4. Cosart is now 5, followed by Aumont at 6. Now that’s probably lower than [fellow Baseball America prospect guru] Jim Callis would have Aumont, but I really like Cosart, Valle and May. Valle was having a big winter in Mexico as one of the youngest players there, showing a lot of power. I suppose Aumont really could go anywhere from 3 to 6, but I feel pretty firm on Gose at 2. The people I have talked to since doing the Phils’ top 10 all thought I had Gose too low.”

The rest of Manuel’s top 10: Bastardo seventh, Gillies at No. 8, Santana ninth and a healthy debate about who’s 10th — tools-laden outfielder Jiwan James or radar-gun hero Scott Mathieson, who is just making it back from his second Tommy John surgery.

Anthony Gose? Seriously?

by OldProspects on Dec 17, 2025 1:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

lots of people really like Gose

Understandably so - he’s obviously raw, but he was a solid player in the Sally League even still. He offers tons of speed on the base paths, plus-plus defensive ability, and the makings of some very solid baseball skills.

It’s never easy to figure out a lot of the guys in the Phillies system - we’re really big on instant gratification here and the Phillies are all about drafting guys who are going to take a while to develop their skills.

by mrkupe on Dec 17, 2025 3:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I still definitely prefer May over Gose, Valle, Cozart and the Mariners guys. Hope John sees it the same way, but I guess it doesn’t matter much in the long run.

Gillies at 8?

A slap hitting A-ball guy who only put up good numbers in perhaps the most hitter-friendly ballpark in the minor leagues?

by redwolf75 on Dec 17, 2025 3:00 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He did put up a .313/.439/.427 line in Everett in '08

Speed, plus defense, great approach at the plate, projects to add a little power…it’s not hard to see why scouts like him.

by ThomasG on Dec 17, 2025 8:12 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

And this isn’t anywhere near the same system it was a few months ago.

I’ve actually got him at #2 at this point. It’s not that I like him THAT much, but I have less question marks about him than I do a guy like May or Gose or Aumont — his floor is pretty well set at 4th outfielder at this point, and there’s definitely value in that.

by PhillyFriar on Dec 17, 2025 8:53 AM EST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

THT just put out their Braves/Phillies top 10s and have Gillies at 2 which just seems sad to me that a player like that is the 2nd best prospect in your system.

by jfish26101 on Dec 17, 2025 9:06 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The consensus among the Mariners blogosphere (and it's been this way

for a while — no sour grapes) is that Gillies is a massively overrated prospect.

by redwolf75 on Dec 17, 2025 11:44 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn’t disagree he’s overrated but

I never understood the "massively overrated" mindset most M’s fans have. Nobody, outside of a few wildly optimistic nutsos, thought him as anything more than a Top-10 organizational prospect. That overrated argument always seemed like more of a strawman than anything. He’s nothing more than a good defensive outfielder with speed and decent contact skills that can get on base at a decent clip. Pretty much everybody understands that.

by ThomasG on Dec 17, 2025 2:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

indeed

But such a player is a pretty valuable guy. We’ve seen players with that kind of skillset stick around for a long time as major league regulars.

by mrkupe on Dec 17, 2025 7:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I Need To Copy/paste this

285-305 average, 375-395 OBP, 40-50 steals with plus defense isn’t a valuable player? He’ll slug about 400, but whatever. This will make him a great leadoff hitter/centerfielder.

well

I don’t think it’s very easy to overrate the guy. He’s got a pretty impressive ceiling . . .good defense, incredible speed, makes a lot of contact, good feel for the strike zone. Even shows some feel for driving the ball, and he’s very young at age 21 with plenty of time to develop pop.

by mrkupe on Dec 18, 2025 12:25 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

In a perfect world

he ends up being the next Brett Butler. Most likely he ends up a Dave Roberts-type eking a living out by being a competent 4th OF and base-stealer. That’s definitely not a bad return on a 25th-round pick.

by ThomasG on Dec 18, 2025 10:12 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Brown

Domonic is pretty amazing when you think that he’s closer to 6’6 than he’s listed in some rags as being 6’5 and has as good as contact consistency than can ever be expected. The rest of his game is very good and he could be quite the player in the future! I’m sure the power will get even better when he gets stronger and fills out, plus getting more experience.

Aumont

SP or RP?

The M’s put him in the pen. Do the Phillies convert him back or is he Lidge’s replacement. If he’s kept in relief, I could see him stepping in mid-season and assuming the closers’ role if Lidge struggles.

Of course, if its at all possible, I think Aumont should be moved to the rotation and kept there, as that’s where his value is highest.

If the Phils see him as a starter, I could see him as high as #2 on this list.

"I generally avoid temptation unless I can't resist it" ~ Mae West

by Blicks on Dec 17, 2025 10:04 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Pen

The Mariners moved him to the pen due to durability/hip issues with the caveat that they didn’t rule out a return to the rotation in the near future. I guess it couldn’t hurt (no pun intended) giving him a shot at the rotation at the start of next season to see how he handles it but, ultimately, I think he’s destined to be a reliever.

by ThomasG on Dec 17, 2025 10:16 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Apparently Aumont was on the Philly sports talk radio station this morning, and he said how much he loves relieving, how it fits with his aggressive mentality, etc. The Phillies are going to have internal discussions, and while I’m a big believer that guys should stay in the rotation if they can hack it there, I think the injury concerns are undeveloped secondary stuff are going to keep him in the pen.

Agreed that that certainly alters his value. If you think he can hold up as a starter, I’d have him at #2 on the list. As it is, I’ve got him at #8 — I mean, I like him, but I just don’t value relievers that highly.

by PhillyFriar on Dec 17, 2025 10:24 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

tell that to the phillies...

ask their fans over at their forum if they would place premium value on a shutdown closer

by ScottAZ on Dec 17, 2025 10:52 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Isn't the Lidge situation more of a lesson

on why you don’t commit 10+MM/yr to closers not named Mariano or Nathan?

You can have a good pen without placing premium value on a shutdown closer.

"I generally avoid temptation unless I can't resist it" ~ Mae West

by Blicks on Dec 17, 2025 11:16 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Wasn’t Lidge a bit of a question mark when they acquired him and signed him? Lidge is just an example of what not to do but I think there have been more examples than Mariano and Nathan over the past 10 years to warrant placing a good deal of value in a shut down closer.

by jfish26101 on Dec 17, 2025 11:24 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Not really.

Reliever value is heavily tied also to IP. If you’ve got a strong starting rotation, your pen is automatically made that much less valuable because they’ve got fewer chances. In other words, having Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels fronting a rotation, along with guys like Happ and Blanton who are MOR guys who do go deep into games, makes a pen that much less valuable. That’s why teams like the A’s were able to get a LOT of WAR out of their pen, because their rotation was filled with prospects who weren’t going deep into games.

Andrew Bailey wasn’t the single best closer in the game, although he led all relievers in WAR, because he pitched so many innings and was frequently doing 2 inning “saves,” etc due to how shaky the SP were.

There’s more “what NOT to do” with closers than there is “what to do”.

"I generally avoid temptation unless I can't resist it" ~ Mae West

by Blicks on Dec 17, 2025 11:36 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

correction

Bailey didn’t lead all relievers in WAR. Should’ve checked that.

Wuertz and Bailey were both top 3 in AL reliever WAR though.

my bad.

by Blicks on Dec 17, 2025 11:38 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not saying pay them $10 mill, I’m saying there are more examples than 2 that you can find and should value a shut down closer highly.

by jfish26101 on Dec 17, 2025 11:40 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Aumont

I think he’s being undervalued. Whether he remains in the pen or returns to the rotation, the guy has a couple of sick fastballs and slider—mid 90s with a ton of movement on his sinker, high 90s with his 4-seamer. He’s also only 20 years old, he has plenty of time to refine his pitches/add a good changeup and also improve his command.

by byronlhsdrmr on Dec 17, 2025 11:11 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

He has a lot of health question marks.

It’s the reason why Mariner fans were worried it was him that failed his physical. Definitely a high upside, but that’ll only get you so far.

posted this somewhere else
so, essentially, Phillies end up trading Cliff Lee, Kyle Drabek, Michael Taylor, Travis D’Arnaud, Carlos Carrasco, Jason Knapp, Lou Marson and Jason Donald for Roy Halladay, Phillippe Aumont, Tyson Giles, Juan Ramirez and 6MM.

is that right? Talk about gutting your farm… ouch

You either have to remove Cliff Lee, or remove Knapp/Marson/Carrasco/Donald.

by PhillyFriar on Dec 17, 2025 11:40 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Why?

They gave up those 4 spects to get Lee and traded Lee to get Halladay.

by jfish26101 on Dec 17, 2025 11:41 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No they didn’t. They traded Drabek Taylor and D’Arnaud for Halladay. Lee got traded because he wants to test free agency. They could have acquired Halladay without trading Lee.

They had Lee last year right? Lee will be playing for another team right? He didn’t hit FA right? Hrmm….he must have been traded unless there is some other transaction I’m unaware of.

"Clearly, I've been wrong. VY is awesome." - AJM

by Longhorn on Dec 17, 2025 11:44 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You can look at it in two ways.

#1: The Phillies gave up Kyle Drabek, Michael Taylor, Travis d’Arnaud, Jason Knapp, Lou Marson, Carlos Carrasco, and Jason Donald for Roy Halladay, Tyson Gillies, J.C. Ramirez, Phillippe Aumont and $6 million.

#2: The Phillies gave up 1 year of Cliff Lee, Kyle Drabek, Michael Taylor, Travis d’Arnaud, Jason Knapp, Lou Marson, Carlos Carrasco, and Jason Donald for 3 months of Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, Tyson Gillies, J.C. Ramirez, Phillippe Aumont and $6 million.

I’m not saying they gutted their system any less, but you’re essentially double counting if you list Lee on the “out” side of the equation with the prospects traded for him.

by matthewmafa on Dec 17, 2025 11:50 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

or

you can keep lee and prospects and try to trade blanton, or not sign polanco to save that cost.

I just didn’t get the logic behind what Amaro did here. He could easily have had Lee and Halladay. That one year for Lee is debatable as well…Blanton/Polando/Ibanez. For a team that can’t go a bit over 140MM, they sure are giving the wrong people the mula…

Close

You’ve got the main point correct, but I’m going to nitpick the accounting a bit in #2. If you are counting 1 year of Cliff Lee given up, you need to count that year when it was acquired as well. So either drop the 1 year given up, or make it 1 year and 3 months acquired.

I would say:

Drabek, Taylor, D’Arnaud, Carrasco, Knapp, Marson, and Donald

for

Hallladay, 3 months of Lee, Ramirez, Gillies, Aumont, and $6M.

Something

else to mention, that its a great tribute to the Phillies with their drafts of the past and their Latin American and International scouting. They’ve traded two pretty good catchers in Marson to Clev and D’Arnaud to Toronto and still have a catcher like Valle. Valle who’s 19 years old playing mostly against players between 27 and 30 in Mexico and is hitting 270+ and is tied for 5th in the league with 10 home runs.
