Others to consider nomination: C.J. Beatty

Toolsy outfielder with hittability question marks. Not a top-20 guy, but possibly worthy of a C grade.

Daniel Calhoun

Calhoun has below average fastball velo, but does have a pretty legit change and his control is very impressive. The guy just pounds the zone.

Didn't like their draft.

Not one bit.

Care to go more in depth?

I have to agree with you that the Cardinals 2009 draft was pretty boring after the first two picks. Relievers and college players with now upside, just like every other draft they’ve ever had.

by CoolCat23 on Dec 11, 2025 10:03 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Just too much risk with the early picks, and not enough upside.

Miller, Stock, and Kelly are probably the most risky combo of players in the first three rounds. Beyond that was unimpressive. Not terribly bad, just not how I’d manage a draft.

Random Thoughts

Guys to strike from the list:

1. Oneli Perez - 27 year old is simply not a prospect
2. Shane Peterson - Oakland As prospect

Guys to add to the list:
1. Roberto De La Cruz - The $1.1M still talks for me. Said another way, I would happily trade the rights to several of the guys above for his upside. He might only have a 20% chance of reaching it but a high ceiling is more intriguing than many of the low floor players on the list:

2. Casey Mulligan - Off the charts combined FIP < 3 in 60 AA innings. This guy is a relief prospect than King or Salas for example.

3. Niko Vasquez - We were clearly too high on him last year but I would guess that we are a bit low on him now. Still a young prospect with potential at a premium position.

As for others that could be interesting:

Blast from the past section - Mark McCormick, Jose Martinez, Tommy Pham, Gary Daley

Toooolsy - Virgil Hill, Tyler Bighames, Cesar Valera, Luis De La Cruz, Jon Edwards, Tommy Pham (again), Cesar Valera, Ryde Rodriguez, D’Marcus Ingrahm

Young Pitchers with Breakout Potential - Anthony Ferrara, Deryk Hooker, Brett Zawacki, Eric Fornataro, Gary Daley

Producers - Charles Cuttler, Andrew Brown, Curt Smith, Xavier Scruggs, Tyler Norrick, Donavan Solano

Virgil Hill

I think OF Virgil Hill is worthy of at least a C based on tools alone.

list

Yeah, I forgot about Peterson and already moved him to teh Oakland section.

Perez stays on the list as I think he can be a surprise conbributor in 2010.

Casey Milligan, yeah, that’s a good one. i’ll add him.
Niko Vasquez sucks.
I’ll go with Virgil Hill. He’s interesting. The other tools guys all like like nearly certain busts to me.
Roberto De La Cruz. OK.
Scruggs, OK. He’s cool.

Cesar Valera

I think Valera is someone to keep an eye on simply because he got a large bonus(600K?) coming out of the DR last summer. A least one other team must have saw something pretty good in him to drive his price that high.

Vasquez is a tough call. 3rd round pick that was noted for being a pretty good hitter and not likely a shortstop. He was awful last year but he did perform very well in the Appy League. So he can produce against consistent 85-90 MPH fastballs and maybe some average curves. Hopefully he can rebound.

hearne

and possibly freeman…

freeman

freeman is a KU guy so I don’t want to dump him….Very good arm too. But his command stinks…he might have to go.

ahhh

picked in the 32nd in ’08… not sure if his ceiling was ever more than organizational depth. Still young though

freeman

He can get his fastball up into the 90s with plenty of movement. Main problem is command.

Tommy Pham, plus four 17-year-olds

Worthy of consideration:

Tommy Pham, 21-yr-old plus CF’er who steals bases at a good % (75-80% two years running), posted a merely league-ave. OPS just under .700 in the FSL…but .750 away from Palm Beach (hitter’s graveyard), and .800 over the second half.

Pham Iso. Slg. Home .101 Road .189
1st half .103 2nd half .194

Four kids: SS Cesar Valera .640 OPS not bad for a 17-yr-old shortstop in the GCL; then three other kids, all in the Dominican Summer League.

Grabiel Hernandez, also shortstop. Solid glovework reputation, OPS 150 points above league, 26-for-30 SB’s, walk rate above ave. & K rate lower than league, too.

Oscar Taveras. Just turned 17 in June, OPS 40 points above league, 7 assists from CF in just 37 games (1 error), also, like Hernandez, solid BB/K/AB ratios.

Luis Perez. (micro-sample alert!) Just 90 PA’s, but very hard to ignore an OPS more than 200 points above league, married to a 22/8 BB/K, and 39% CS rate behind the dish. Slash stats: .308/.494/.431.

Interesting longshots all. Who would I bump to make room for the above quintet? Lesse. Hamilton, Hearne, Ingram, Kopp, and O. Perez.

Oh, and CF Michael Swinson ripped a hole in the Appy League at 19 this year: .338/.425/.541, sound strikezone management, too, at 11/17 in 74 AB’s. Gotta be top 25-30.

Arky Nieto has to be there as well. He’ll still be 20 on Opening Day 2010, and he’s already had success across low & high-A (116/35 K/BB in 135 IP, and only 7 HR’s allowed).

Don’t know who to bump for the latter pair. OK, Blake King & Virgil Hill.

dominican summer league

Not going to do Dominican Summer League guys. I have to draw the line somewhere.

Donovan Solano

Future utility guy who may have a MLB career; split time between AAA & AA as a 21 year old last year. Superficially decent numbers in a smaller sample size in AAA (an empty, BABIP dependent .323), superficially awful numbers in AA (super low BABIP), played SS, 2B, 3B. Had nice scouting reports when he was 18ish, haven’t heard lately, or what kind of defense. But, he could end up having a career.

oneli

I’m leaving Oneli in the book but am creating a seperate “free agent” category for guys who are wandering around. His place on the Cardinals list will be taken by Tommy Pham.

Fair enough...

…but does that mean Wagner Mateo wouldn’t have made the top 30-40? (If he’d played a partial 2009 season in the DSL, I mean.) Not trying to trap you, John; just askin’. :)

We all forgot Mr. Patience & Power Aaron Luna—-or at least I did. Pretty sure his Peak Davenport Translation has the bat good enough for starting corner OF, and Sean Smith’s defensive yardstick pegs him an OK gloveman at 2nd base, at least for now.

Any opinions or info, John, on teen southpaws Anthony Ferrara, Hector Hernandez, or oversized Kevin Siegrist?

Finally, just a thanks for all the work you do here, and at that other place before. Merry Christmas, Mr. Sickels!
