that's unfair
after all, i think it’s important at a minor league baseball message board that the community is able to express its preferences for bottled water brands :) lol
did anyone else wonder why in the heck that was even posted? i mean, who cares?
by joltinjoe on Jul 30, 2025 1:54 PM EDT 0 recs
Yeah that seems like an odd rule
I mean I don’t go ranting about someone breaking into my car or posting pictures of woman and talking about how hot they are or pictures of old ships which have no point at all but if I want to post something that doesn’t necessarily have to do with baseball, I should be allowed to. Seems like a very odd stance to have especially when your board is already struggling to have the activity it did before the new layout (again I don’t think the layout has anything to do with that and it’s more about people being lazy to create their account).

Get a blog
if I want to post something that doesn’t necessarily have to do with baseball, I should be allowed to.
Sure, you can do that. Just don’t do it on SOMEONE ELSE”S WEBSITE. Seems like he should have the right to decide, doesn’t it? Seems a bit odd to tell someone else how to run their own website.

:D
That is sort of an idiotic stance to have. As other posters pointed out, John should set an example and act/post how he wants his community to act/post. A lot of his own off-topic posts have started more problems than asking what water people prefer. The whole thing is ridiculous but as you say John can do whatever he wants with his blog. Whether we keep reading or not, I don’t know. I don’t particularly like being treated like a 5 year old because he had a weak stance on trolling before and couldn’t get it under control.

Personal Thoughts
I would prefer if NOBODY could go off topic. It just clutters the message board and causes flame wars (see the OT RANT WARNING LANGUAGE fanpost for proof). I have a hard time understanding how that post was at all relevant to a baseball website and definitely did not need foul language. John should lead by example and act the way he would like the community members to act. I am not trying to cause any issues, just explaining my feelings on the topic.

Is this really a problem?
Is there a large rash of problem off topic posts? I find most of them fun and during the dog days of summer, a welcome distraction to my baseball obsession.

Well...
I never post period, but I think its a ridiculous rule that a public forum is restricted so heavily. Additionally, if you want people to stay on topic, adhere to the schedule that you lay out and maybe there will be more to converse about.
If I had a rocket ship, I'd never want to land.

just to clarify
I was being sarcastic. I have no problem with this rule and, seeing as how this is a FREE website in which John voluntarily gives his time, I see no problem with JOHN setting the rules.
My attempted point was to point out how ridiculous the post was about preferred bottled water brands. I mean, this is a baseball message board. What relevance does that have.
And seeing as how this is JOHN’s website, I think he should be allowed to set the rules and make posts Off Topic as he sees fit.
I for one appreciate all the work he does on this site while not charging one cent. It’s nice for someone like me who wants to learn about milb players without having to pay a fee to read about them.
I think many of us should stop bitching and moaning and appreciate what John does without asking anything in return. If you don’t like his rules, go some where else.

what part of...
...this is John’s site, don’t you understand?
Hello If you don’t like his policies, then don’t visit.
I personally appreciate that we rarely have off topic discussions. Prior to this policy, it seems several flame wars would break out and detract from the otherwise useful information on this site. Was this an issue before? YES IT WAS.
If you want to comment on somethingelse, get your own blog, or go to one of the many many sites dedicated to that topic.
John will occasionally open up a thread to comment on a current event, reminding us to be civil. I do enjoy reading others opinions, but in now way do I want it to take over the baseball content.

Can’t say I’m a big fan of this. In fact I strongly disagree with it.
I respect that it’s John’s site and all, but this just isn’t beneficial to the site’s health from what I see. What really makes it so sour is how John posts OT stuff all of the time (whether any of us like the material itself or dislike it doesn’t matter, as it shouldn’t) and then drops that on us. I do agree with his desire to supress certain thinga such as politics, flamewars and what have you. I also understand the question of where the line can be a wide gray area, but still I think something more like “I reserve the right to take down OT as I see fit” would do just fine. You can’t expect to assert a do as I say - not as I do order and expect it to not rub people the wrong way.
And while we’re all into swearing…

Eh...
I don’t think that’s a good analogy. The bulletin board where I work is open to anything that isn’t hateful or porn. That’s been the case where ever I’ve worked for the most part.
I see it more in line with a parent preaching to their kids about the evils of drugs and alcohol and then lighting up a joint and cracking a beer. OK, that’s a little extreme, but you see what I mean? It’s simple pysch really - no likes to be told what to do when the person telling it does it themselves. The whole thing about it being his site takes a back seat when it’s as prevalent as it is. Having to go ask makes you feel like you’re in second grade which is a complete turn off. I understand some here need to be treated that way, but c’mon.

Perspective
John can post OT stuff bc this is his website and he SHOULD dictate what gets talked about, be it baseball, battleships, or babes. As for anybody that claims they should be able to post their OT stuff, think about it this way: John is the decision maker for this site and if he posts something, obviously he has decided that it be OK. If somebody else posts something random, John has no way of approving that beforehand. Baseball= OK. Other Stuff= not OK. If you have ever been a manager or responsible for running any sort of office/dept/etc, hopefully you can understand that you have to approve of something, whether it is your idea or someone else’s idea. But any member at large cannot just go above the head of the manager/boss and do as he sees fit. There is a hierarchy, like it or not. If you don’t like it, you can quit your job, drop out of school, leave this website, whatever you choose to do. After all, this is still a free country, but this is Johns house and he makes the rules. Your boss/teacher whatever makes the rules and you follow them don’t you?

Welcome To The Blog Everyone
In case some of you never noticed, John has made his wishes known on this subject many, many times before. Almost since the beginning.
This quote is taken directly from one of John’s posts dated Nov 10, 2025 “I will not post off-topic threads very often and will ride herd very closely on any that I do. Note that I ALONE reserve the right to begin off-topic threads.”

Too Fast On The Post Button
I didn’t get a chance to finish my post, but I guess I made my point. John has had this rule in place for years. Before the site was ever flooded with trolls. He’s actually given people a lot of latitude when it comes to OT things and what do people do? Spam the site with complete crap.
So what should he do? Let everyone do whatever the hell they want or enforce his rules? Rules he has made clear a very long time ago and rules which he has repeated many times? IMO he is too nice and too lenient. He should ban all morons immediately and without warning. Sorry if you are a moron.
Same guy, new name.

Perfectly Reasonable
This is Mr. Sickels’ site, and he can run it as he sees fit. I may not be enthralled with the reaffirmation of his policy on OT posts, but c’est la vie.
I will once again state my case FOR this site having at least an election night thread. It’d be too good not to, and I’m sure that Mr. Sickels would enjoy having an outlet to discuss an obviously hugely important issue with his community.

Offshore oil drilling
Isn’t going to help our energy problems, it will just help keep keep the oil companies making a profit, and the economic benefits that spread from that. So it’s more about feeding the industrial machine than providing meaningful energy relief. You’re not going to see a dent at the pump.
Fishing. Speed boating seems like a lot of work for a rush you can get on a motorycle or skiis. Though I do enjoy runs up a river in a jet boat sometimes.

Suggestion
Perhaps this new rule can be lifted during the offseason?
I agree that during the season, much of the discussion taking place on these boards should be baseball related. However, during the winter, there isn’t much baseball going on. It would be nice to be able to discuss other topics (basketball, football, Fall TV, etc).
Just wanted to throw that out there. Having to go to John for every ‘Off Topic’ post will just be a deterrent and will limit discussion on the site. If there is a topic or discussion that John doesn’t like, he should just delete it.
Now raise your goblet of rock. It's a toast to those who rock!

Rules and such
This isn’t John’s fault. If you want to blame someone, blame the real culprit…..Barry Bonds! Don’t you know that all problems on planet Earth come back to Barry? Floods, crime, gas prices, that Caveman show…In all seriousness, this is John’s website, and it’s free. If you don’t like how it’s managed, you’re free to find another site.
by Ox on Jul 31, 2025 9:35 AM EDT 0 recs
Yes...
I get it. It’s John’s site, he can do whatever he wants, and we must obey or get lost.
Personally, I don’t make Off Topic threads. However, it’s nice to see some discussions of interesting topics that are not always baseball related. Whatever I guess, like you said, if we don’t like how the site is managed, we should find another site. I just don’t think that’s the appropriate message to send to the community. We all like this site because it’s a great place to talk baseball and sometimes other stuff. Since the core of the site is based on community activity via posting, I think it’s fair for us to make suggestions or criticisms.
I’d prefer that John just delete threads that he deems inappropriate, that’s all. I don’t see how many people will actually make the effort to contact John to make an Off Topic post. As a result, I forsee reduced activity and discussion on the message board, especially when baseball isn’t on everyone’s mind (offseason).

Personally, I just ignore the schedule you post. I assume it basically means “I’m hoping to put these out in this order, around these days assuming work or life doesn’t interfere”.

Yup.
On that - I agree. That’s almost exactly how I see it - very well put. I don’t mind the laissez-faire approach with the schedule. Especially when everything that has happened in and around that family in recent history. Believe me, my outlook on life has changed radically over the last few years - I can totally identify with just how un-important this site is in the overall scheme of things. It can wait. So can I.

plus
when the offseason rolls around, that schedule is nearly written in stone, and it gives us all something to look forward to….if the work that produces the book in the offseason and his reports in the offseason takes priority now and sets a prospect review back a few days, so be it….and especially if family and life priorities take precedent, absolutely such a review can wait….frankly, we’ll all still be chatting about something on fanposts and finding some insignificant statistic to argue over about a kid 5 years from even attempting the majors, so we won’t even really notice!

I can understand why some are upset about this, but what I don’t get is people bitching about John not following his schedule or not doing this or that.
“It’d be awfully nice if John would stick to the schedule that he puts out.”- dman126
Maybe John has other things going on that are more important than a website that he doesn’t charge anyone to read while giving out first-rate info.
As he said: “It would be awful nice if I had unlimited time and didn’t have to worry about my wife and family.

Seriously people, look at the broader picture. You should be thankful that he’s as involved and willing to listen to suggestions as he is. I’ll bet 99.9 percent of us on this site, if forced to run this site wouldn’t consistently abide to any schedule and would probably say screw it after hearing all the bellyaching.
I for one would like to thank John, like I have before, for offering his time, knowledge and effort into this site. I enjoy it a lot, just like most of you do. Cut the man some slack and appreciate what is here, rather than what isn’t.
