SHOCKED
Most people rate this guy pretty low.  John has said on a few occations that this guy can hit, shocked to see such low numbers.

I agree that Petco will eat steal some of the home runs so the double numbers will be higher.

PETCO
I'm not sold on Kouzmanoff putting up great counting stats.  I'm pretty sure he'll hit well but Petco is awfully tough on hitters and will make his overall numbers not look as good.

When you watch him, his swing looks a heckuva lot like Howie Kendrick's (with less explosive wrists and hands, but very similar balance and arc). Not going to hit too many home runs in the NL West, but some good parks to hit lots and lots of singles and eventually doubles (33 would be great for a rookie, but I could see this guy going over 40 a few times later on). I didn't really account for Branyon here, so the games played might be high, but maybe KK will get some starts at 1B vs lefties, so I'll leave it.

Kind of the anti-Marte.  It will be fun to compare the two down the line.

i see him hitting well for average, but not a lot for counting stats, and i really disliked his defense in the few times i watched him...i picked him up in a dynasty league early in 2006, but i dropped him at the end of the season after seeing him a few times...he'll be a good average hitter, but that's about it, i think...

Jftr, not trying to be a dick, but you're calculating OBP using ABs, instead of PAs (I noticed in the Marte thread also).

Very solid season for a rookie in a tough park to hit in.  I do think he'll miss some games from time to time, but will be consistent enough to be the primary starter all year.

re: Questionable move by the Padres
Kouz is ok, but Barfield already put one full season under the belt.

I guess for the Pads, the Curse of the Thirdbasemen forced Towers' hands.  But, finding a good secondbaseman is harder than finding an adequate thirdbaseman.

However, I DO believe Kouz will break the Pads' Curse of the Thirdbasemen.

Kouz's numbers:
(platoons with Branyan at first + PetCO)

G: 133
AB: 447
H: 124
BA: .277
2b: 27
HR: 16
BI: 65
R: 45
BB: 44
SO: 94

Not bad, for a first full season, and at 26.  In 2008, when he's 27, that's when he will have a good season...

by feslenraster on Feb 2, 2026 10:53 AM EST reply actions

Says who?
Barfield was nice, but he the Padres got Marcus Giles off the Braves scrap heap. Third basemen are harder to find? Sure... That why last year the Padres openned the season w/ Vinny Castilla.

"Kouz is ok, but Barfield already put one full season under the belt."

Who would you rather have, Teahan or Gordon? But Teahan's "...already put one full season under [his] belt"

Great logic.

not mentioned thus far
...but there's a clusterflub of 2b/3b guys in san diego right now...kouz is the 3b right now, but that's written in light pencil...branyan, marcus giles, todd walker, paul mcanulty (who's listed at outfield, but may be put at 3b now and then to get him at bats), and geoff blum off the bench...that's a lot of guys for two positions worth of at bats....

by biggentleben on Feb 2, 2026 2:16 PM EST reply actions

can't keep them all
Somehow I don't see the Pads keeping Blum, Walker and Branyan... Seems kind of redundant.

I think Walker gets shown the door.

If it wasn't for disappointments, I wouldn't have any appointments.

by kings33 on Feb 2, 2026 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

If anyone gets traded, it'll be Walker
Because of Blum's "ability" to play SS. They might keep all 3, though.

McAnulty's the odd man out. Kouz and Branyan have pushed him all the way off the 3b depth chart. If he doesn't win the LF job outright in the spring, it's back to Portland.

The Padres could have a tremendous bench if they'd resist the urge to carry 12 pitchers. Cust, McAnulty, Walker, and Branyan as PH?

by Hurley on Feb 2, 2026 4:41 PM EST up reply actions

There's also the fact that...
The Pads didn't trade away Jesse Barfield so Kouz could share time with journeymen infielders. I'd be surprised to see any of Branyan, Walker, or Blum take his ABs.

by DrunkIrish on Feb 2, 2026 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

Ah!
We traded Jesse Barfield? We could have put him in RF, moved Giles to LF, had the best OF defense in the league and lots of power. What were we thinking?

But yeah, the Padres didn't trade Josh so Kouzmanoff could chew seeds next to Black on the bench.
