Here's an All Questions Answered thread.

I'll answer every question in this thread. The ground rules:

1) one question per poster
2) do not disguise mutliple questions as one question
3) this is rapid fire format. Questions that require large amounts of research will be punted.

Will Leonys Martin be the starting CF for Texas in 2012?

How do you interpret his season so far? His mediocre Cal league stats give me pause.

He’s just 20. Let’s see how he does once he comes back from the injury. I know the batting average at high desert was disappointing, but I remain optimistic about him long term

I’d probably give him a B- right now. I don’t know where that would rank him, I’d have to look at the rest of the system in detail.

I’d go with Odo right now….better command.

If Odo performs well in Double-A he could get an A-. Wheeler is a very strong B or a B+.

I really don’t like a 2/20 BB/K ratio. Sample small, of course. He is hitting for average and power, as expected. I don’t have a report from the Pioneer League at this point. Pre-season reports indicate a sweet line drive swing, but that kind of plate discipline won’t work at higher levels. He’s young enough to get better obviously.

Colby Rasmus

More of a player development question: how big of a problem is the seemingly ongoing interference by Rasmus’ dad in his hitting development?

by 4dizzle on Jul 16, 2025 12:12 PM EDT reply actions

colby

i have not followed the situation closely enough to comment on this. I knew it was considered an issue earlier in his career, but I haven’t payed attention to this since he reached the majors.

I will say this. Parental interference, especially for guys coming out of high school, is something that I think is pretty common, but we usually don’t hear about until the problem gets VERY out of control.

by John Sickels on Jul 16, 2025 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I think its a very interesting subject

Especially when you have guys like Chipper and McCann who clearly listen to their fathers more than their hitting coaches and it seemingly works great for them. I would think it could be a good thing as long as the parent knows what he’s talking about with regards to hitting. I mean, who knows a players swing better than their father who has probably been working with them on it all their life?

by nixa37 on Jul 16, 2025 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I wonder if it will affect his trade value any

I know from reading the different sights it varies from Cardinals fans wanting James Shields for him from the Rays and Rays fans willing to give up someone like Alex Cobb or Alex Torres for him.

by Dbullsfan on Jul 16, 2025 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

One thing to keep in mind with Tony Rasmus

It’s not like he’s just some random dad. He was a professional baseball player when he was younger and is the coach of a very successful high school team, so his advice is worth something.

He was just on a St. Louis radio station a few days ago and based off that interview the Dad thing seems way overblown, at least in terms of his influence on Colby as a hitter at this point in Colby’s career.

The hoopla surrounding him mostly stems from some of his internet posts, like when he said that Colby would never be accepted in St. Louis similar to JD Drew, because of his demeanor and the way he handles himself and the way he handles the expectations on him.

by oplaid on Jul 17, 2025 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Very interesting

Those sorts of comments probably also make it tougher for the Cardinals to trust Rasmus enough to let his son listen to him. Contrast that to Chipper’s dad who the Braves trusted enough to let him take a look at Dan Uggla and see what ideas he had.

Josh Sale

I realize he has little pro stats to go by but what are your thoughts on his potential ceiling and chance he hits it?

by jintman1 on Jul 16, 2025 12:13 PM EDT reply actions

sale

Well so far his batting average has been pretty crappy in the Appy League, but 21 games isn’t enough to get all panicked about a .187 average. He’s drawing walks and showing good isolated power, which fits the pre-season scouting reports about his skills just fine. …power and patience, he’s showing that. He’s the equivalent of a college freshman, keep in mind. Ceiling is the same as it was before, a guy who can mash 30 homers and draw a bunch of walks, but beyond that we just need more data.

Cody Buckel

If he keeps this up, does he start creeping onto top 100 lists? I’ve been saying Hellickson as a possible comp for awhile. At what point does that because a less than egregious comp?

by gogotabata on Jul 16, 2025 12:15 PM EDT reply actions

buckel

Hmm…i can see some similarities there. I wouldn’t say top 100 at this point ,not based on less than 60 innings of work, but if he stays at this level of performance through July and August he could get in there, depending on the final scouting reports of course.

Basically, too soon for a Hellickson comp. But not implausable for the future.

looking great in AA and off to a good start in AAA. What do you foresee from him and where does he fit positionally in the Cubs plans?

by wmdeeee on Jul 16, 2025 12:35 PM EDT reply actions

my take

Cubs will give him a look at 3rd, but spec/rumors still suggest that LeMahieu might be ahead of him in their thinking for 3rd, and Vitters is ahead of both. If DJ shows he can handle 2nd, that will open things up a lot more. Flaherty’s decent defensively at 3rd, but needs more work. His bat certainly plays better than DJ at 3rd. He might be best served in a DeRosa/Baker-esque utility role.

Toonster’s take seems reasonable to me.

by John Sickels on Jul 16, 2025 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

It might not be a winning infield, but with some combination of Flaherty, Castro, LeMahieu and Vitters, it would be nice to have a home-grown infield — most likely would be the first one I’ve seen in 30+ years of following the Cubs.

Again, it might not lead the team to the playoffs, but it would be nice for a little while to see if it will work.

Che-Hsuan Lin of the Red Sox.

Have you seen his defense, and is it good enough to carry his bat to the majors? Alternatively, will his bat develop enough to be playable?

by ThePanda on Jul 16, 2025 12:49 PM EDT reply actions

my take

I had hope for Lin once, but it seems quite unlikely that the bat is anywhere near passable to be a starter. A bench piece, certainly possible as his defense and speed can be factors. Feels like … Sam Fuld with better athleticism and arm.

by toonsterwu on Jul 16, 2025 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I should clarify.

When I mean carry his bat to the majors, I mean as a starter. I think he’s almost a sure-thing bench piece, as toonsterwu said, due to his defense and speed. He’s a perfect 4th/5th outfielder. But I’m more interested in his prospects as a full-time starter.

Kid is a beast. This is a lose comparison, but he reminds me some of Granderson. With his speed he should definitely be stealing bases better than 7/12. Quick stroke. Has really turned on some inside pitches to drive them. He is obviously young and still far away, but he looks like a Major League ballplayer.

What’s your take on how aggressively he’s been pushed this year? Decent -solid potential, but injuries in the system, plus upper level disappointments, have pushed him to AAA. Are you concerned that this will hurt his development (sorry if this is viewed as 2 questions, it’s meant in the same vein)

by toonsterwu on Jul 16, 2025 12:57 PM EDT reply actions

His command has been pretty weak in his first two Iowa starts, but it was good in double-A. He’s been moved very quickly and he needs to stablize here. It COULD hurt his development, but I won’t conclude that it has just yet. Certainly he’s reached the level where he has to make some adjustments. He was a C/C+ type pre-seaon and still fits in that area.

There's not really a good sample of prep pitchers from the system to judge this

One abject failure thus far in Matzek and one way too early to call arm in Tago doesn’t really speak to the organization’s skill in this department on the whole.

by Jeff Reese on Jul 17, 2025 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions

clearly they just did it to mess with Keith Law

Spend a first round pick and major money on a player that they know they have to have some low level staffer completely overhaul the mechanics of, and hope it doesn’t break the phenom down completely to where he no longer has the ability to hit the broad side of a barn from 21 yards away and lose six to seven mph off of a fastball. This is how winners are built, by taking risks like this, taking pitchers, scrapping everything they did to get to that point and shaping them into something completely different. If they fail, sure, they become poor innocent millionaires that were caught up by this pitcher eating machine. The Rockies know this, I’m surprised more teams haven’t caught on to this system.

I guess what I’m saying here is that as you yourself point out, the story on Matzek as presented by some takes some leaps of logic that people seem to be accepting as complete truth. It has correlation/causation issues and it doesn’t completely satisfy the question of what exactly happened. I’m skeptical. I don’t believe the Rockies are blameless. I also don’t believe they are as totally responsible for this as has been presented.

Matzek’s failure in development should be a mark against them, but I’d be careful to consider it too damning until a complete story emerges that fills some of these gaps.

Oh, and WOOT USA!!!!

by Rox Girl on Jul 17, 2025 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd put the majority of the blame on the Rockies

And the fact that he returned to his high school trainer/pitching coach in hopes that he can fix him? You don’t think that is damning?

I’m sure they had their reasons for changing his mechanics, but it’s clear now that it was the wrong move. They took a guy with the best command in that entire prep class and turned him into a guy that has no idea where the plate is.

Alright, a couple of quick questions. Explain to me exactly what the Rockies coach

did to Matzek’s mechanics. What changes that took place are we talking about? Why did this take seven mph off his FB and why did he progressively lose command over it from the point he started in Asheville in 2010 to the point he’s gone back to his HS coach? Why did this loss of control happen so gradually?

And you’re absolutely certain that it was the Rockies coach that caused it? There was a considerable amount of time between when Matzek was drafted and he had his first professional appearance, you are certain that the three months he spent with the Rockies coaches in that span had more to do with it than the six he spent on his own? You are certain that his shoulder was/is as healthy as it was on draft day, and therefore can be sure that it was mostly the Rockies fault? What evidence do you have to show this?

Correlation does not equal causation, and the biggest problem I have with the story as we have it is that there’s this assumption built in that whatever issues with Matzek had arisen after whoever this coach was came to adjust his mechanics, in whatever way he did that never really gets explained, and not before. The Rockies don’t make a habit of messing that much with pitchers, why would they risk so much on an asset that has so much value to them? It makes zero sense to me unless it was clear that there was something amiss already. Ubaldo Jimenez had very ugly mechanics coming through the system, and the organization only gradually cleaned them, not wanting to lose that velocity and stuff that makes Jimenez special. Why would they change that practice to try something more drastic on Matzek? My own thought is that the tweaks, and I’m guessing that they were very minor tweaks that most pitchers absorb in stride, the coach and the Rockies become scapegoats for a bigger issue with Matzek, whether mental or physical, and while I think they are to blame for being too stubborn to try something like this sooner, setting what slim chance for development he has back considerably.

by Rox Girl on Jul 17, 2025 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions

The video I've seen of Matzek this year

shows a slowed down, deliberate delivery, without the explosiveness of his h.s. version. And I think it’s a form of denial to uncouple much-publicized tweaks to a young pitcher’s mechanics from immediate struggles. The simplest answer is usually the closest to whatever you want to characterize as “truth”.

by blackoutyears on Jul 20, 2025 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

In recent days more has come out on this, thankfully

Not that it proves me correct at all, it might actually be the opposite. I’m just glad that there’s enough information to actually judge what’s going on now.

I encourage people to read this article by Jack Etkin

and this one at Purple Row by one of our minor league gurus for more.

Basically, I think the organization is more to blame now for not understanding Marshall pitching and their prospect’s system, and certainly for not explaining to coaches not to mess with it too much without some sort of advice from somebody who knows the deal. I do think that whoever the coach is that’s getting blamed for this mess by Keith Law and others isn’t at fault, as it seems an organizational lapse of understanding. The coach was just doing his job as he was told to do it.

Is Jose Altuve really a mini-Dustin Pedroia, a mini-David Eckstein, a flash in the pan, what?

Also, can God create a stone that he cannot lift? And then lift it?

altuve

I believe in him. Mini pedroia.

As for God, I am a panentheist.

He can hit

He is one of the more enjoyable guys to watch as well. I find it strange some scouts and rankings people continue to discount the guy. Watch him play. He is usually one of, if not the best player on the field.
