Interesting dynamic

As I was about to say on the Rd3 thread, I think a lot of us were looking upside in Round 3 (knowing that the draft would be over) and passed on a lot of very safe real-life third rounders, like 2B Ryan Wright, RHP Burch Smith, RHP Carson Smith, RHP Scott McGough, RHP Mark Pope, and Kansas reliever RHP Colton Murray.

Oh, and I almost forgot: SS Philip Evans is the highest-rated guy left on my board.

Lol

Evans was the highest left on my board as well. Great job with all those Rays picks, AT.

thanks

It’s a lot of fun, but it’s also a real challenge. I wanted guys like Fisher, Beede, Maples who were available when I was drafting, but I felt constrained even by the rumored $12+MM budget given the massive number of picks to be made.

In the end, I’d happily trade Flamion for Burdi — I actually have Flamion slightly higher on my board, but I wanted to leave the draft with more high upside arms than I got. Still, I figured the Rays aren’t drafting for need.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 4, 2025 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Those two were so close for me

I think out of everyone I researched, I was most excited by Flamion’s swing - especially since I hadn’t heard of him going into all of this. I think he is going to be a great pickup for someone in this draft.

by cookiedabookie on Jun 4, 2025 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

I just think Burdi is more of a Rays pick than Flamion, particularly in this draft.

That being said, I’ve been trying to figure out why he seems to have fallen on a lot of scouts’ lists this spring and I still can’t figure out why.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 4, 2025 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I think its the mechanics

but like you said, and I agree, I think it is fixable, and if its fixed - watch out. He has TOR upside to me. If not, he is probably a reliever - but a really good one.

by cookiedabookie on Jun 4, 2025 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed

and I meant that Flamion has been falling. Burdi I just have tagged as underrated for the reasons you’ve identified.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 4, 2025 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Ahh...didn't realize Flamion was falling so much

I was blinded by love for his potential.

by cookiedabookie on Jun 4, 2025 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

From the brief snippets that I’ve read on Flamion, he’s muscled up over the winter and spent most of the season looking somewhat tight and muscle-bound in his swing. Two guys that saw him this spring mentioned that they missed the athletic and loose actioins that he was showing in 2010.

Smith/Smith

Both were under consideration for 3.101

Burch Smith we had some concerns that this is his 3rd time in the draft so would he sign and with the Purke pick signability was an issue. With regard to Carson, I liked him but his high effort delivery is an issue and the Mets already had taken Purke

by mtk52983 on Jun 4, 2025 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

You're probably right

Burch Smith is the highest-rated guy still on my board, but if we’d have done a 4th round I’d have probably gone with Quinn or Holmes instead. Maybe O’Brien or Lowery if I had to have a college catcher.

by birdtown on Jun 4, 2025 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Speaking of "if there had been a 4th Round"

I think I would have pushed harder for the Mets GM to take McCann for some catching depth and gamble that Ogando would be there when the Mets picked in Round 4

Highest guys left on my board...

Matt Skole, 3B/1B/OF, Georgia Tech
Austin Slater, SS/3B, The Bolles HS, Jacksonville, Florida
Carter Capps, RHP, Mount Olive
Wallace Gonzalez, OF, Bishop Amat HS, Covina, California
Austin Wood, RHP, USC

I like Slater a lot, but didn’t think the Giants could sign him away from Stanford. Would probably take a flyer on him around Round 9.

People, put on your thick skin...

Who do you think had a good draft? A bad draft? How was your draft?

Getting Rendon is obvious. I’m not worried about him at all, he’s no less than a solid 3B for a long time, in my opinion.

Barron helps gives SS depth to the system, and you can’t have enough of that. Especially if Franklin moves off short. You need to have options.

Kes Carter was purely a BPA pick and he’s oozing with tools.

Blake Snell, a high-upside arm, a local product…

Would have liked to get a college pitcher or catcher earlier, but none of them felt right at the time.

drafts

Off the top of my head —

I really liked what the Diamondbacks did with their draft — Hultzen and Lindor are very safe but still high-ceiling guys IMO, and Jorge Lopez and Adam Conley are some really nice high-upside arms.

The Yankees did fantastic given their limited number of picks. I feel the same way about the guys the Braves got.

Really, I think the community did a hell of a job in general.

I thought the Indians' 1st round draft was questionable

Although drafting A. Bradley isn’t impossible, they still could have nabbed a few college players like Barnes, Jungmann, or Springer, considering that they have been drafting college players for ages.

by ilikeburritos on Jun 4, 2025 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought the furor over Archie Bradley was a little overblown

That’s a big-time talent still available, and being a two-sport guy means the Indians can game the system with respect to his signing bonus, so it didn’t strike me as a ridiculous choice.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 4, 2025 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

wasn't referring to you

was referring to the 30 people who said “That’s insane” immediately after the pick.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 4, 2025 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Where is this "The Indians can't draft a HS player" talk coming from

Yes, its what they’ve done for the last 9 years but go out and read what is being published by BA, BP, ESPN, etc, they’re looking for high upside pitchers. They’ve scouted this kid and they like him and may be able to spread out his bonus.

Barnes and Spring are not going to be taken by Cleveland (no matter how much I would like Springer) as they sent almost no one to scout the Big East Tournament.

The only thing that is definite is if Bauer falls to them they’ll take him. After that its both Bradleys (with Archie being the higher rated on IMO), Gray, Jungmann, Lindor, and maybe Taylor Guerreri or Javier Baez. I saw Keith Law had Joe Ross going to them but that just seems really high especially if another HS talent with a high consensus ranking is still out there.

by Zeke K on Jun 4, 2025 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Eh, I should not have taken Kevin Comer. I was unaware of his asking price. Oh well…Padres can decide between him or Swihart.

Initial thought

The Rays hit it out of the park, although I doubt that they’ll only go with 5 college guys in the first 3 rounds in real life.

In general, I believe that all of us took a lot more high school kids in the first 3 rounds than will be taken in real life. I’m certainly guilty of that, as I don’t think that the Giants will spend 2 of their top 3 picks on HS kids.

thanks

I tried to shy away from the really tough HS signs even when they were available, and looked for HS guys to whom the Rays have been linked (Eierman, Vogelbach). I definitely thought about taking Dickerson at 56 instead of Delmonico, which is probably slightly more realistic.

Still: last year the Rays went with a toolsy HS catcher at 1.31 — an unprotected pick. So clearly they’re not afraid of going after prepsters early.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 4, 2025 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Good points. Besides, the money aspect, my main reasoning for them to pick more college guys is that they are in a “win now” mode. They’ve got pitching and some good young players now, but they don’t really have 3-5 years to wait for a HS kid to develop into a pro contributor. If they go HS early, I think it will mainly be on pitching. Just my opinion. I could be totally off, but we’ll all find out in 3 more days.

The org tends to view the draft differently

And more specifically, discussed how taking talent because it will reach the majors quickly is not in their plans

by sstamour on Jun 4, 2025 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Really the only pick you made that I’d question is Moore in the 2nd. The Giants’ MO seems to be picking high-ceiling college guys in rounds 2-5 (I think in this mock they’d have drafted OF Kes Carter in the 2nd, or a college arm like Johnson from Cal or Armstrong from Vandy) and then trying to pop a couple of high schoolers in rounds 6-10. While they don’t draft a lot of HS players, they do seem to sign most of the ones they pick in the first 10 rounds and have recently been making a very good effort for the 2-3 HS guys they pick in rounds 11-20. And it’s not like they’re not taking high-upside talents for their college picks.

I’d be very happy if the Giants’ drafted like you.

Hector Sanchez: Suck it Russell Nathan Coltrane Jeanson Martin.

by tedfordfan on Jun 4, 2025 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed, I doubt that they would ever take a kid like Moore before the 5th round, but I gave them Brad Miller at #49 when I wanted Jake Hager, so I felt they owed me one. That’s why I went with the college pitcher Mazzoni at #116. I think that if the Giants go with a HS guy with any of their first 4 picks it will only be a pitcher.

Yankees draft review

First, I want to say great job to everyone, and big thanks to John for hosting a great event. This was my first year doing this, and I can say I am hooked - will definitely do it next year.

To review draft: At pick #51, I initially was hoping Osich or Chafin would drop, but no dice. Boyd was #1 on my list for this pick going into the draft at that point. However, at the same time, Fisher, Esposito, and Meo had dropped farther than I expected. I started getting really excited about the possibility of Fisher dropping to me especially. Esposito and Meo were picked, by Fisher and Boyd were still available. Had to go Fisher, and Boyd picked next by the Rays. All in all, I am ecstatic with this pick.

Pick #88, I was looking at landing one of Jerez, Tyler Greene, Rookie Davis, Cave, Flamion. Jerez fell off the board, but some good people had fallen - new number one on my list was Nick Burdi, with Flamion and Cave close behind. I really am happy with this pick as well.

For pick #118, I was really hoping Flamion, Green, Cave, or Davis would fall. One by one they all were picked, except for Davis, who I popped with no hesitation. Phil Evans was higher on my list, but with Culver drafted, didn’t feel like it was a good fit.

All in all, I am really happy with how my draft turned out. What does everyone else think?

Not bad, but seems light on pitching

No way Dunston doesn’t go to Vandy, and Lopes would require a huge overslot to sign in the 4th round or later.

Astros

I’m overall satisfied with how the draft went, though with only 3 picks the results look less spectacular than some others.

I had decided to go for college pitching at #11, with Gray, Jed Bradley and Taylor Jungmann as my preference list, in that order, of the guys who seemed likely to be there. Jungmann was the only one remaining, so that decision was somewhat made for me.

With the picks at #69 and #99, upside was the main target, and up-the-middle players, which I think I accomplished with RHP Bryan Brickhouse and C Brett Austin. One thing I liked about them, is that even as high school players, they aren’t huge tools goofs with big bust potential. Even if they don’t hit their ceilings, I think they’re both athletic and well-rounded enough to have value, which I think is important for a system like the Astros.

Jungmann

was an excellent get with the top pick and, I think that has a chance to be who they pick in real life as well.

I was really happy with my draft

I was really pleased I got Bell in the first. I think he’s far more signable than Wilson last year. He’s just the kind of guy the Cardinals need.

Second round I was a little worried after the top three guys on my board went in three straight picks about 5 picks before mine. Still like Gagnon and could see the Cards taking him…though I think he could be gone before then.

Third round I was pretty ecstatic about Greene. He’s another guy I could see the Cards take but I think he’ll go before now in the real draft too.

by Dttl89 on Jun 4, 2025 5:01 PM EDT reply actions

Bell seems like a stretch

…but hey, I drafted Austin Wilson for the Rays in the 1st last year. That’s why we do this with play money. :)

Gagnon is a very realistic pick, particularly after going Bell in the 1st. I can totally see the Cards doing this.

Greene is getting hype as a first-rounder, so he’s an absolute steal in the 3rd and gives you leverage with Bell.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 4, 2025 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I was really on the fence between Bell and Swihart

I wasn’t sure how realistic a Bell pick would be. I decided to go with it since the Cards are lacking in early picks, have a big draft budget, and need a 5 star position prospect like Bell. Realistically, I could see Bell falling just like Wilson did last year, but I still think Bell will sign. I wouldn’t draft him if I didn’t.

by Dttl89 on Jun 4, 2025 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions

hard to know

I wasn’t just being a wise-ass about Wilson; at this point last year I thought he was a tough-but-doable sign. Turns out he was a “no way in hell!” sign. Without access to the “advisors” we can’t really know.

I think Bell is probably a 50/50 sign right now — I don’t think you engage Scott Boras if you truly have no intention of going pro, and the scuttlebutt is that teams aren’t taking his letter seriously. But who really knows?

White Sox

We didn’t pick ’til the sandwhich round, and I was caught off-guard by the speed of things in the second round (my appologies) but, I sorta like who I picked

  1. Ricky Oropesa -1B USC - Big time power bat who made progress on taking pitches and making contact this season.
  1. Zach Cone CF Georgia - A run on players I liked (Krich, Maples, even Vogelbach) sent me scrambing here. I like Cone’s athletic ability and power but, I might have liked to pick him a round later perhaps. Do you think he would have lasted to #110?
  1. Chris Marlowe RP Oklahoma State - Interesting sleeper here. In the mold of The Mariners First-Rounder from a couple years ago, Josh Fields from Georgia, Marlowe is a smaller (6-1, 170) with big-time arm speed, and command issues. He is even more overpowering than Fields was - 61ks in 32 Innings in JC in 2010, 71Ks in 41 Innings at Ok. St. this year - impressive

Maybe

. . . but maybe not. Pretty talented athlete. Im not a big fan of drafting based on “good baseball body” but, he is as good looking of an atghlete as Springer or Mike Mahtook and I saw some potential there.

Too be honest, I could have studied more or used some more scouts because I really only had one HS arm I liked there, Kyle Krick, and he went at #77 - and I didn’t like any of the College arms there enough.

Red Sox Draft

Given the Red Sox recent draft history, I aimed to use one of my first two picks on an expensive HSer. At 19 I considered either Bell or Swihart, but decided to take Meyer given that he is also high upside (and in my opinion, not as high risk as some claim given that if he struggles with consistency or a third pitch, he can move to the bullpen and be a nice bullpen piece). While I would expect one of the HS bats to be there in the real draft due to signability, this didn’t happen here so I went with another high upside bat in Nimmo. Given that I hadn’t drafted a C yet, I decided I needed to address that at 36 or 40. Given that Hedges was there, I decided to grab him there. At 40, I thought the most value was in college pitchers and was choosing between Meo and Chafin. I ultimately decided on Chafin, but would have been happy with either here.

In the second round, I wanted to grab a high upside pick and was pleased that Jerez was still there as he represents good value in the second round, in my opinion. With my final pick, I took a relatively safe pick in UCONN SS Nick Ahmed. While I understand the trend was to lean towards upside in the 3rd round of the community mock draft, I figure that the Red Sox can go above slot on HS guys quite a bit in later rounds to get that upside, but Ahmed represents good value in the 3rd round and you can never have too many up-the-middle position players in your system. I didn’t factor in that he plays in New England and is from Massachusetts, but it doesn’t hurt either.

by christophersgeissler on Jun 4, 2025 5:09 PM EDT reply actions

You had some nice picks

But I would have went with either Bell or Swihart over Meyer. Was ticked you took Jerez, as he was my main target in round 2. And Ahmed was another nice pick.

by cookiedabookie on Jun 4, 2025 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Lots of Meyer hate here

So I think he’s actually sort of underrated in the minorleagueball community. It all depends on your confidence in the team’s ability to teach him some control. Red Sox are a strong org with good coaching, so I think he’s a perfectly fine pick.

Nimmo at 26 annoyed the hell out of me. I love that guy.

Hedges is an obvious Red Sox pick and they can clearly afford him.

Chafin is one of my favorite college pitchers. I was planning to go Meo/Chafin at 41/42 until you popped him.

Jerez at 81 is pretty much exactly where he should go.

Ahmed in the 3rd is nice value; most scouting reports I’ve read say he can stick at SS.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 4, 2025 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah Nimmo was a great pick

Hedges was right near where I had him (#37). Chafin was a target of mine for 51, if he fell. Overall, nice job. Of course, since it was the Sox, I hope they fail miserably lol.

Meyer wasn't the best pick with who was available

But I had him ranked 19 on my personal board, and he was picked right there. I think he was a perfectly defensible pick.

Meyer

In picking him, I was trying to make picks that I thought the Red Sox were likely to make. I probably would have taken Swihart there, but figured they are unlikely to take two guys with really big price tags in the first. And while he is higher risk than some of the college arms, they seem to like him as they took him out of HS and offered him a lot of $$.

by christophersgeissler on Jun 4, 2025 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

also

if you think there’s not much difference between Swihart, Susac, and Hedges (which is how I see it), then why not take the best arm at 19 and whatever catcher’s around at either 26 or 36?

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 4, 2025 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I have Susac there.

Mets Draft

I know a lot has been made of their selection of Purke in Round 2, but even without Purke I thought they had a strong draft. Springer and Michael represented obvious values and Ogando has some intriguing upside from what I have seen about him. Not many 18 year old lefties are throwing 91-94

by mtk52983 on Jun 4, 2025 5:16 PM EDT reply actions

I thought that we did well
  • George Springer CF
  • Levi Michael INF
  • Matt Purke LHP
  • Cesar Ogando LHP

At least two of them, Springer and Purke, could be true impact players.

The feasibility of the Purke pick raised a lot of eyebrows. The big question is, “what is the Mets draft budget?” None of us know. What we do know is that the Mets will go overslot much more than they have in the past. We also know that the Mets principle owners are illiquid, and may be forced to sell their entire stake because of a Madoff related lawsuit. That lawsuit, potentially for $1 billion, has cast such a dark cloud over the organization, that a new minority owner is being added. The Mets will soon get a $200 million cash infusion. Half of that will go to debt. The other half will go to operations. Even with a potential $70 million deficit this year, there will still be enough money to bolster the draft budget. Will the Mets draft Purke after the first round, if he is still available? That is not known at this point, but it is feasible.

I try not to draft for need

particularly given how slowly the Rays move even advanced college players through their system. Who knows what their 1B situation will look like in 2014?

But I find it very difficult to put together an entire mock when you have constraints like the Dodgers (no money), the Astros (suckers for helium), the Orioles (completely insane), etc.

yeah

as you can see, I wasn’t a slave to the board when it came to drafting.

I knew if I passed on Wong he wasn’t going to be there at 31. I thought one of Cron or Nimmo might make it, and then I figured I’d take whichever of Howard and Owens wasn’t drafted. Of course, then Howard AND Owens immediately went off the board, so I had to readjust.

I would not have taken Michael until pick 52 or later.

Blue Jays

1.21 Robert Stephenson, RHP, Alhambra HS (CA) - Not my first choice and it likely won’t be the Jays real selection, but I didn’t particularly care for the college bats on the board. Levi Michael is likely a second baseman and the bat doesn’t wow me. 21 is too strong to go Wong (heh). So, I opted for the best HS arm on the board. He should sign for slot or close to it.

1s.35 Brian Goodwin, OF, MIami-Dade CC - Opting for a HS pitcher in the first, I had to go college bat here. Michael was still on the board, but he wasn’t any more attractive than in the first round. The Jays new regime likes athletes, and Goodwin has 5 tool potential. He’s a bit on the raw side, but that’s OK. He shouldn’t be too hard to sign.

1s.46 Matt Dean, 3B, The Colony HS (TX) - Probably the most divisive pick that I made, some thought it was a significant overdraft and others liked it. Dean brings athleticism, bat speed, power potential, projection and a great work ethic to the table. He probably won’t come cheaply.

1s.53 Aaron Westlake, 1B, Vanderbilt - I love Westlake’s bat. He has easy power and shows a surprisingly good feel for hitting. Outside of Rendon, he’s the best hitter I’ve seen play this year. He’s an OK athlete right now, but he’s probably going to slow down. I generally dislike that profile, but my god, that bat! The Jays took him last year so I’ll have to get his OK to re-draft him. He should sign quickly.

1s.57 Michael Fulmer, RHP, Deer Creek HS (OK) - Now it was time to return to the prep pitchers. Fulmer is flying a bit under the radar, being in the shadow of Bundy and Bradley. He has a good arm, seeing his velocity tick up this spring into the mid 90s and holding deep into games. Tightening up his body can only help things. He’s committed to Arkansas and I haven’t seen anything either way on his signability.

2.74 Julius Gaines, SS, Luella HS (GA) - Opinions on Gaines are extremely varied it seems. BA didn’t even have him in their top 200, and that absolutely baffled me. He’s an excellent defensive SS who has the tools to hit. Perhaps the bat is too much of a question mark to go much earlier than this, but what’s not to like?

2.78 John Stilson, RHP, Texas A&M - Having this many early selections allowed me to pull something like this. John Stilson was diagnosed with a labrum tear, but he recently received a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews that said he’d be able to rehab it and avoid surgery. We’ll see where he stands after the 6 week layoff and decide whether he’s healthy enough to follow the Scheppers/Loux route. At his best, the stuff is definitely good enough to start, but the delivery is definitely a concern.

3.108 Patrick Connaughton, RHP, St. John’s Prep HS (MA) - Here is probably my toughest sign. Connaughton is committed to play basketball at Notre Dame, but he also has a huge ceiling on the mound. 6’5 190 with easy velocity and relatively promising secondaries. I’d be excited to see what happens once he starts to focus solely on baseball. I’m guessing he’d get 7 figures, but the Jays are one of the organizations unafraid to give him that kind of dough.

Best Remaing:
1. Senquez Golson - Nearly pulled the trigger on him instead of Connaughton
2. Burch Smith
3. Philip Evans
4. Eric Haase
5. Taylor Featherston
6. Kyle Smith
7. Roman Quinn
8. Dante Flores
9. Peter O’Brien
10. Kevin Matthews

Royals Draft

I was delighted to have Trevor Bauer fall into my lap. And I’m sure that if he is there, KC will take him and let him do his thing. Former teammate of Michael Montgomery and then Monty would have his long toss partner. I think he’s the best NCAA pitcher in the draft and happy to have him in Royal Blue.

LHP Charlie Lowell from Wichita State was the second round selection simply because I didn’t see enough upside in the position guys that were there. He is low to mid 90s, will move through the system fast, and should be able to contribute to the MLB level soon. I think the Royals will take a guy that can come up and help our awful pitching staff soon. Plus he’s local and they’ve been following him.

I think the Royals will take a lot of OFs in this draft. I think they’ll go young and upside. I took Domonic Jose because of the bloodlines. He is the former son of Felix Jose who played in KC for a while. The kid likes the Royals and is a big fan. He’s fast, tall, and projectable to be a left field/center field type. He does have a strong arm as well and might get to RF but I doubt it. Speed and power. Just what they are looking for.

Twins Draft

Twins Draft:

1-30) Sean Gilmartin, LHP, Florida State: I wanted Nimmo. I like Susac a lot, but am worried about his signability. Gilmartin is a good fallback, throws strikes, ,Twins-type guy, won’t need long in the minors.
1S-50) Joe Panik, SS, St. John’s. The system needs infielders desperately and Panik is NOT an overdraft here in my opinion. Even if he has to move to second base, he has a strong set of skills and underrated tools, and like Gilmartin he shouldn’t need much time.
1S-55) Granden Goetzman, OF, Florida HS: Super-toolsy high school pick with power/speed upside.
2) Keenan Walker, OF, Central Arizona CC: Speed demon can play center field, has some pop as well, took a big step forward with the bat this year.
3) James McCann, C, Arkansas: Very strong defensive catcher according to everybody except Basebal America who, oddly, gave his defense a lukewarm review. Not a great hitter, but not a bad one either in my view, has a chance to hit enough to start. Intangibles are off the charts.

So I come away with a pitcher, infielder, and catcher who could be ready for the majors within 2 years, and two tool-laden upside outfielders. I’m happy.

Really liked the Goetzman, Panik, McCann picks

Especially Goetzman. McCann pick was great value to me - I had him in second. I thought Gilmartin was a reach - had him in second as well. I think Osich, Chafin, or Meo all would have been better picks there. But if you waited, you may have had to pick him over someone else you have, so this overall package could be perfect, even if one pick is a bit off.

by cookiedabookie on Jun 4, 2025 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

really nice balance

1.30 — Gilmartin has a ton of helium; he’s gone from being unranked preseason, to the low 100s in March, to the top 50 in each of the five most recent scouting reports I’ve seen. Not a sexy pick but a very realistic one.

1.50 — Panik is on my board as “best defensive shortstop of the draft.” I haven’t seen any reports that he needs to move to 2B, although I guess that’s a question about his arm strength?

1.55 — I love Goetzman and definitely had him in the mix at 1.56. He’s more of a Rays pick than Delmonico. (Incidentally, I have the two catchers, Susac and Delmonico, as the two toughest signs of my draft.)

2.87 — Keenyn Walker — fastest player in the draft, a pure 80 speed tool. Definitely a guy I was looking at for the Rays.

3.117 — McCann — without a doubt the BPA AND the best catcher available. I passed on him at 2.89 only because the Rays had already drafted two catchers (and have four more catching prospects in the system already).

I think the real life Twins would be thrilled with this draft.

Panik the best?

Panik was a very good pick, but there’s no way that he’s the best defensive SS in the draft - he’s not even in the top 6 college SS available. Then you start addding in HS kids and Panik easily falls out of the top 10. You’re correct that 1 of his issues is the arm, but his range is also an issue. I’d put it at somewhere between average and above-average - and it’s closer to average than above-average.

Brewers

I tried to stay with the spirit of the project and draft who I felt the Brewers were going to take, and as a fall back in the first round, who the voters over at Brew Crew ball had wanted.

I took Matt Barnes with the 12th pick, Javier Baez with the 15th pick, Larry Greene with the 70th pick and Joe Musgrove at 100.

I have liked Barnes for a while now for the Brewers, but at 15, and I would hope that they get some sense this year and overspend on the draft and try to pick up Blake Swihart with the 12th pick.

They have been tied to Greene an awful lot, with some speculating they may even take him at 15. Even this would be a reach for the Brewers who love to take guys at least 10 spots too early.I would have preferred Andrew Gagnon at this pick.

First two picks

Can’t complain about either one - I had Barnes tenth, Baez 25th. Greene is a decent pick at 70. Musgrove I had as an early fourth rounder, but this is close enough. Overall, solid draft - no overdrafts, but no big value picks either (at least to me).

I hate that you took Musgrove

I wanted him in the third badly.

I actually liked your draft very much

I thought you did a good job addressing organizational needs and talent while not reaching out of position. I personally would have went for a HA arm over Barnes but I can see why Barnes would be attractive.

Cincinnati Reds Draft

1.27 - Henry Owens, LHP, Edison HS, Huntington Beach, California

I thought long and hard about what to do here. Since the Reds have never drafted this late before, they are on uncommon ground and recently read an article that the Reds intend to target the higher upside but al will depend upon who is available. Jocketty has had more success drafting HS players late than college players and I followed suit.
At 6’5 195, I personally felt that the large and projectable Henry Owens was the best available talent. His skinny frame indicates he’s not done growing and I feel he’ll add velocity. I also couldn’t help pay attention to his competition saying how great he was.

2.84 - Ryan Carpenter, LHP, Gonzaga
A 6’5 lefty Alaskan Carpenter is very talented. Many people wanted the Reds to draft a capable college arm that will contribute sooner rather than later and here he is. I had him tabbed as a supplemental pick that works in the mid 90’s with 3 potential plus pitches. Pitching for Gonzaga, he might be more of an unknown but I was happy to see him there for the pick as I feel he has top of rotation stuff.

3.114 - Tyler Gibson, SS, Stratford HS, Macon, Georgia

Gibson filled a need while providing organizational depth at a thin position. He is capable of playing SS and at 6’2 190 even if he outgrows SS and needs to be moved to 3B, that would be alright. Coming out of HS, he will allow the Reds to see what they have with Hamilton and Frazier, and his lefty bat will play great for the Reds in the future as well. I think in the end, he will be impressive at the hot corner. Another pick I was excited about

Pre-draft, I actually predicted 2 of my 3 picks (Owens & Gibson). If the draft had carried on, I would have targeted in no particular order…

Matt Skole, 3B/1B/OF, Georgia Tech
Austin Slater, SS/3B, The Bolles HS, Jacksonville, Florida
Carter Capps, RHP, Mount Olive
Wallace Gonzalez, OF, Bishop Amat HS, Covina, California
Austin Wood, RHP, USC
Harold Martinez, 3B, Miami
Nathan Burns, OF, Howard
Scott Lyman, OF, UC Davis
Thomas Robson, RHP, Delta Secondary School, Delta, British Columbia
Andrew Suarez, LHP, Columbus HS, Miami, Florida
Chris Jensen, RHP, San Diego
Gabriel Rosa, OF, Colegio Hector Urdaneta, Rio Grande, Puerto Rico

Great Draft Havok

Owens was picked right near where I had him ranked (24), Carpenter (72) and Greene (91) later, and I had Gibson about a round lower (137).

Ignore Greene comment

Too much draft in my head right now lol.

by cookiedabookie on Jun 4, 2025 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks

I was fairly confident Owens would be the for the 1st round but I was largely surprised Carpenter was still available when I selected. Large framed, high velocity college lefty starters with 3 potential plus pitches don’t come around every day. Even based on your numbers, Carpenter was under drafted by 12 picks. So, I was very happy.

Charlie O'Brien

Why doesn’t any one seem to want that guy? Questions that he’ll stay at catcher but very good bat…

Love how Firebat's draft went for the Rangers. I'd be very pleased if this is how the first 3 rounds went in real life

I fully intended to take a C

with the 37 or 33 pick, I was surprised when Swihart, Hedges and Susac were all gone.

Well it's hardly John's fault you were there.

And unless you expect him to read your mind or do your research, he couldn’t possibly have known who you wanted.

Brett Mooneyham

Angels need quality left handed prospects, and I see him as a #4 at worst, #2 at best. I wonder why he dropped so much? I know he missed the whole year because of an injury, but it was just a finger injury. He was ranked in the 15-25 range before the season, so I think he makes for a great 3rd rounder.

rockies

I think I did well considering where I selected and my college constraints. Anderson at 20th, spangenberg at 45th, crick at 77th, Gaedele at 107th. It’s a solid draft with upside.

by mkorpal on Jun 4, 2025 11:27 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Angels

Taylor Guerrieri and Brett Mooneyham are the 2 guys I picked. I love Guerrieri’s upside and I think Mooneyham fits an organizational need, a solid lefty who has plenty of upside. Mooneyham sort of reminds me of Garrett Richards, a guy who could do much better in pro ball than NCAA ball. If he figures out his control problems, I think I got good quality of my 3rd rounder.
