Apples/Oranges Discussion Question: Hosmer or Teheran?
Here's an apples/oranges question for you.
If you were starting a new team, could have either Eric Hosmer of the Kansas City Royals, or Julio Teheran of the Atlanta Braves, who would you pick and why?

I guarantee
if yesterdays start had gone smoother, this would be much closer, but there is a lot of “what have you done for me lately” with prospecting

Hosmer
I’d always take the lesser risk in the position player.

This.
If they are anywhere close in talent level, always go with the hitter.

I have Hosmer in my league but voted Teheran
and the context which this question applies isn’t very clear (ie: standard fantasy, keeper, a real MLB team?)
If speaking in terms of a fantasy keeper / standard format I’ll take Hosmer all day with the dearth of pitching available and the fungible flexibility it affords.
If speaking in terms of real life, I’ll take Julio Teheran as I much prefer a rotation centric club for all intents and purposes.

I'd usually go with the hitter
But there are a bunch of mashing 1b’s in MLB. Hosmer is going to have to really rake to be elite. Not saying that he won’t…but it’s the name of the game for a franchise 1b.

I think it's harder
as a general rule, to find a potential franchise hitter than it is to find a potential franchise pitcher.

Look at last years Was championship team
Pitching wins WS! The reason the Braves made their turnaround was with pitching! To me great pitching and good defense wins ballgames

Hosmer by a mile
(1) Young pitchers are much bigger injury risks than young hitters.
(2) Julio Teheran has had some shoulder issues in the past.
(3) Because of Julio Teheran’s early promotion he’s likely to rack up a lot of inning by age 25. Even if he’s stellar through then his injury risk is heightened.
(4) Top 20 pitching prospects as a group perform more poorly than do top 20 hitters — there’s good research available.
(5) While top hitting prospects sometimes fall short too, Hosmer has the markers for for success: The combination of great plate discipline, bat control, a powerful frame and a good athlete, especially for his position.
(6) Hosmer put dominant numbers up in AA and AAA; Julio Teheran less so - his strikeout rate in AA and AAA were not elite.
Julio Teheran is a great talent. Hosmer is even better and a far less risky pick.

Agree
Injury risk an especially big factor for me.

Hosmer
As a Braves fan who owns both prospects in fantasy leagues, it’s easy. Hosmer is a safe bet to be an impact #3 hitter for years while Teheran is slightly more risky due to him being a bit further away from where Hosmer is in his development as well as being an injury risk with his delivery and young arm. Hosmer is a guy KC can start building around now. Even if he was with KC, Teheran wouldn’t be ready for that role today.

Speaking from a Braves perspective
may not be the easiest in that you’ve got the burden of being able to speak with the luxury that the spoils of both your current MLB rotation and arguably the most enviable collection of minor league arms can give you. While both are worth of building contenders around, Teheran is the center piece commodity that trumps literally every position player except perhaps 3B or SS for their elite talent scarcity premiums.

Teheran
Pretty easy call IMO. Like others have already stated, 1B is a pretty easy position to fill in the bigs while SP is always the most rare commodity that teams overpay for on an annual basis in free agency. Give me the potential ace every time.
Now, if the question were Teheran or Trout, I’d take Trout. Trout plays a premier position.

Hosmer
I always take the hitting prospect over the pitching prospect due to the injury risk inherent in pitching prospects.

You know....
if you ALWAYS take the hitter over the pitcher, you’ll have a team full of hitters and no pitchers. Just sayin’ ;)

I would have to take Hosmer,
he seems alot less more of a risk. Also i think in the end he will be better.

I chose Teheran simply due to his immense ceiling as a potential Ace
Ace pitching prospects are harder to come by…I do love Hosmer though. it was a tough call for me, but I always vote pitching first.
