The 2011 Minor League Ball Community Mock Draft
2011 Minor League Ball Community Mock Draft
As long-time readers know, every year we do a Mock Draft the weekend before the real draft. Here are the ground rules.
The Commissioner of the Mock Draft is me, John Sickels. I will be guided by the principle of making this as fun as possible, and as fair as possible.
Step One: Selection of Scouting Director for Each Team
I will select a scouting director for each of the 30 Major League Baseball franchises. Each scouting director will be known by their Minor League Ball community name. This is basically on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you want to be a scouting director, ask. Qualifications: You MUST be available to participate in the Mock Draft, Saturday June 4th at 12:00 PM noon, central time. You must also pledge to operate the Mock Organization Diary (see below) in a fair, open, and forthright manner. Any scouting director who does not or cannot do this will be relieved of their responsibility. My tolerance level for disruptive behavior is extremely low right now and I won't hesitate to pull the plug on someone not doing their job.
Step Two: Establishment of Mock Organization Diaries
Once a Scouting Director has been officially designated by the Commissioner (me), the Scouting Director should establish a Mock Organization Diary. This should be titled: MOD Red Sox, or MOD Cubs, etc. In the MOD, readers who want to participate in the Mock Draft should meet to exchange ideas and information, argue, and hash out who you want to draft. Anyone can participate in the MOD, however I suggest that readers try to stick with one or two organizations. Due to the vagaries of the "fanpost" system, it may be necessary to post new MODs frequently.
Step Three: Mock Draft, Saturday, June 4th, 12:00 PM Central Time
The Mock Draft will begin on Saturday, June 4th, at 12:00 PM Central Time. It will run through three rounds. That means round 1, and the supplemental rounds, all the way through round 3. Teams will select in the order that they select in the real draft. The Scouting Director for each club will be responsible for making the choice in the connecting thread, with the thread moderated by me
Post questions and comments about the mock draft here. Do NOT post requests for Scouting Director Assignments in this thread. I will post a separate thread for that beginning at Noon CDT today.

Think the O's will take Bundy?
Personally, I think it would be a bad move, especially if they passed on Bradley for him. i dont mind the kid, but you can have the same pitcher, with better polish and experience in Gray.

Think they would take him if Rendon was available?
I wonder what they have planned for the offseason, and whether they will try to land Prince Fielder to play 1B/DH. I can see the reasoning behind Starling over Lindor since they took Machado last year, unless they did in fact take Lindor and move one of them to 3B.

I just don't see any way that Rendon doesn't go 1.2 or higher
If I were the O’s GM and the top 3 picks were Rendon, Cole, Starling, I would have no problems taking Lindor at #4 notwithstanding the presence of Machado in the system. You can never have too many five-tool high school shortstops in your low minors.

If Rendon IS there...
pick him and run to the bank…
Between Lindor & Machado, MM is more likely to need to shift to 3B, though his bat will play there very well. And that’s not a knock on MM, more praise for Lindor’s talents as a defensive SS.
BAL is in a bit of an odd spot, in that they could draft any of the 6-8 guys that would fit at their pick slot (Starling, Gray, Bundy, Lindor, etc.) and it fits an organizational need. If it were available as an option, this would be a great spot to trade down for additional picks (yes, yes, I know - this isn’t the NFL).

When the mock draft begins, how much time will there be between selections?

time
I try to keep it to 2 minutes or less.

That's about 4 hours with no breaks
Will there be a break in the middle?

Cubs
In the past 30 years, by my count, only 4 picks have made any significant contribution to the Cubs MLB squad: Shawon Dunston, Mike Harkey, Kerry Wood, and Mark Prior. Joe Carter, Jon Garland and Rafael Palmeiro were also 1st rd picks, but made the majority of their contributions to other MLB teams (one could argue on Raffy, being an All-Star for the Cubs in ’88). Patterson - well, one could argue that he only really contributed to 1.5 seasons to the Cubs (at least in a positive manner) in ’03 & ’04.
Their picks have been all over the board - college, HS, pitchers, hitters, positional need, BPA. In the past 5 years, all but Vitters were college players, so they might likely stay that route. I’ve seen projections that if all others pass on Starling, they’ll take him at 9. I’d prefer that they didn’t, and go after a college SP. They have some low level talent, but really hurt their system depth in making the Garza trade, and need to fill in the gaps at the mid- to high-minor levels. Taking someone like Gray (odds-on favorite) or Hultzen (pipe dream) is the route they should take, IMO.

Draft Question
Do we need to take realistic guesses on signing bonuses, or can we postulate that the piggy bank is fully open, and that ‘signability’ isn’t a real concern?
by dbreer23 on May 17, 2025 12:49 PM EDT reply actions
Its always been
Based on what the team you have’s realistic expectations are to sign the player, and not only that but also draft them.

yeah, the idea is to get as realistic an informed mock as possible
so the Dodgers shouldn’t pick Dylan Bundy even if he falls to them at 1.16, for example
