All Questions Answered Thread
Here is an All Questions Answered Thread for you.
I will answer any question posted in this thread. Please observe the following guidelines.
1) One question per poster.
2) Please avoid asking overly broad questions like "name your top 20 catching prospects"...a question that takes me an hour to research and answer kind of takes the fun out of it for everyone else.
3) I will cut off the questions sometime this evening. I am on child care duty most of today and won't sit down to work out most of these answers until later this afternoon, but I will answer everyone, so please be patient and check back often.
UPDATE: NO MORE QUESTIONS PLEASE. I have plenty here to work through.

Nick Franklin
What type of upside do you see BDNF having and which MLB player would be a good comparison?

I haven’t seen him in person yet and I hope he doesn’t get promoted out of the Midwest League before I have a chance to get up to Clinton. Statwise, he’s been in a slump lately as the poor plate discipline seems to have caught up with him.
Ceiling…a middle infielder who could hit 15 homers and steal 20 bases a year, but with erratic batting average and OBP skills…not sure who that sounds like.

Braves pitching prospects
How would you rank Teheran, Delgado, Minor, Vizcaino, and Robinson Lopez, both relative to each other and among all prospects?
by vandystu on Jul 7, 2025 10:23 AM EDT reply actions
braves
Well frankly I like all of those guys. Vizcaino’s recent elbow problem knocks his stock back a bit until we see how he recovers. Of the others, I would rank them Teheran, Delgado, Minor, Lopez in that order, with the top three being B+ prospects. Teheran likely an A- by the end of the year, maybe even an A.

Andrew Cashner
Die hard Cubs fan here curious about your take on whether the Cubs would be better served to groom Cashner as a starter or closer? With our season about to fizzle out and become sellers, seems like the best course would be to strech him back out and put him in the rotation. Your thoughts?
by Ramakis34 on Jul 7, 2025 10:23 AM EDT reply actions
cashner
I prefer him as a reliever at least in the short run. I would use him in the bullpen the rest of the year, let him get his feet wet, then re-evaluate at the end of the season. I’ve always seen him more as a future closer than a starter back to his days at TCU.
by John Sickels on Jul 7, 2025 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Great tandem
Thanks for the time John. If Cashner does prove to be a solid reliever this year then the 8th/9th pair of Cashner/Marmol is a pretty solid duo at the end. Just need to get to them.

JP Arencibia
What do you make of his destruction of the PCL over the past couple of months? He’s hit like .320 on the year now with 22 HR and an OPS above 1.0, though it is Las Vegas, so the numbers always concern you. Does he look like a legit prospect now, and what kind of upside could he have?
by doron on Jul 7, 2025 10:27 AM EDT reply actions
Not just Vegas
On the road, he’s hit .090 points better, almost twice as many doubles, and 12 HRs on the road to his 10 HR at home.

JP
He’s clearly made some progress with improving his strike zone judgment, although his BB/K rate is still less than ideal. I had him as a Grade C in the book. I would definitely raise that to C+ at this point, with a chance for a higher grade depending on what happens by the end of the year, what the scouting reports say, etc. I have not seen him this year and my view may still be colored to some extent by the wild hacks I saw him take last year. Upside….a guy who can hit 20-25 homers a year, but I still don’t trust the batting average and OBP to be consistently good.

by John Sickels on Jul 7, 2025 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions
20-25 HR per year from an average defensive catcher = All-Star. That is easily better than C+.
by metafour on Jul 7, 2025 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions
But is he average?
His CS rate is atrocious, and I haven’t heard particularly good reviews about his abilities behind the dish. I guess it depends just how below average he is.
by Franchise887 on Jul 7, 2025 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions
He is athletic behind the plate. Will be passable; and power will more than make-up any lack of defense.
by metafour on Jul 7, 2025 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions
there's more to hitting than HR
but even so, I do agree that C+ might be a little low, I’d push J.P into the B-/B range

by gore51 on Jul 7, 2025 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions
At the catcher position? John Buck is an All-Star this year; and Arencibia is easily more athletic behind the plate than Buck is…and could hit even more HRs.
Goldstein is right on with Arencibia: his tools still signal an all-star type player; regardless of how little he walks or how much he strikes out. Stop pretending like we’re talking about a 1B or LF here who needs to post a .380 OBP to be worthwhile; a guy who can stick behind the plate and who has Arencibia’s power is an easy above-average player.
by metafour on Jul 7, 2025 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions
well, using John Buck is a terrible argument
but yes, I agree, if he can hit ~20 HR and play at least adequate D, then he’s a very useful player, but it’s not guaranteed that he can do such things, thus the B-/B grade.
Adoptive parent of Kyle Nicholson
by gore51 on Jul 7, 2025 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions
Its not guaranteed that Aaron Hicks will ever hit worth squat yet people have no problem blowing smoke up his ass, do they? I dont get your statement…nothing is guaranteed.
Arencibia has true plus power to all fields. I’m not optimistically projecting him to hit 20 HRs; his power tool is huge. The home-runs he is hitting are being blasted out of the park.
by metafour on Jul 7, 2025 6:23 PM EDT up reply actions
okay, this is going nowhere
but I’ll try 1 last time to speak with rationality.
J.P. Arencibia has good power, but whether or not he’ll be able to make enough contact in the major leagues will dictate whether or not this power will actually prove to be useful. If he doesn’t make enough contact, he is nothing more than a bad backup catcher who can flash power. He doesn’t control the strike zone well and he doesn’t play exceptional defense, so if the contact isn’t there, he holds very little value to a major league team.
With a player like Aaron Hicks (who is another guy I’m not huge on), he has a lot more things that could go wrong with him and he will still be a usable major league asset, plus he has the potential to be a top flight player. He can make contact (better than J.P.), he works the strike zone (loads better than J.P), he has flashes of power (nowhere near as much as J.P), he’s got speed, and he’s going to be a good CF. However, comparing Hicks-Arencibia is like comparing a rock to a playing card since they are completely different types of players.
I really hope you see the argument that I am presenting to you on this silver platter of a comment, because if you cannot, I really think you ought to re-learn the basics to judging baseball prospects.

by gore51 on Jul 7, 2025 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions
Hicks can make better contact than Arencibia? Gee; is this based off of his .251 average last year or his .263 average this year?
That is a strong statement based on a player who is in the low minors and has shown nothing to confirm your ridiculous claim. Arencibia hit .315 in the FSL, .282 in the Eastern League, and now .317.
by metafour on Jul 7, 2025 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions
What?
You are using batting avg to justify contact rate? Ever heard of K rate? It’s a lot better judge of contact. You might want to use it sometime.
by guru4u on Jul 7, 2025 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions
Low K-rate? LMAO.
I can go up and hit a weak groundball to SS every time…zero % k-rate; yet I’m making good contact? Uhm, no.
Not striking out means absolutely nothing if you’re not doing anything with the ball.
by metafour on Jul 7, 2025 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Not only that; but Arencibia is striking out less than Hicks is…so not only is his K-rate lower; his bAVG is way higher.

What kind of power/speed numbers do you think he’ll have? The errors are not a good sign, though he has cut them down in the last month or so. From what i’ve read he’s got an extremely strong arm so if he is moved off second could he possibly play third instead of an OF corner?

Having an overpowering fastball is nice, but it’s possible for pitchers to get by without one. Owens is just such a pitcher. His fastball mostly sits in the 87-90 mph range, but he thrives on locating and changing speeds thanks to a plus changeup. Owens was hitting on all cylinders in his start Tuesday at Richmond, striking out the side in the first inning and retiring the first 17 hitters he faced. His streak ended when he walked the opposing pitcher with two gone in the sixth, but he bounced back to strike out the last hitter he faced before being pulled for pitch-count reasons. Owens’ 11 strikeouts set a new career high.
-BA Hot Sheet 5/7/10
Owens had the biggest breakout in the Pirates system last year, but he still left scouts wondering how his combination of average stuff but extreme polish would play at the upper levels. On Tuesday, Owens answered many of those questions by not allowing a hit and striking out 11 of the 19 batters he faced. His fastball sits in the upper 80s with the occasional 91-92 mixed in, his curveball is solid, and his change-up is true plus, but it’s his fantastic command that allows him to succeed. His ceiling likely ends at a No. 4 starter, but one look at the Pirates pitching statistics shows that they could use one desperately.
-KG 5/5/10
Scouts continue to come around on him as a future No. 4 or 5 big league starter
-KG 5/21/10
Doubters keep peeling away with his success at the upper levels. Not much projection, but a big leaguer.
-KG 5/26/10
Average stuff/outstanding command lefty’s ERA by month: 3.57, 2.75, 2.16.
-KG 7/23/10
He very well could have seen a jump in his velocity this year, but so far no major source has noted it. I’m still viewing him as having a Zach Duke ceiling.

Scouting reports are quite positive in regards to his stuff, and this is reflected in his excellent K/IP ratio for Quad Cities. He’s been on some pretty strict pitch counts, however, and still needs to build up his stamina and innings. Too early to tell if he can be a number one guy, more probably a 2/3 but still time to get beyond that. ETA late 2013.

Funny
considering the discussion just above. He’s like a RH Rudy Owens: fringy FB, good change, breaking ball is third best pitch, above avg control. And his whiff rate isn’t even as good as Owens’. C+ seems plenty fair.

I have the report on him written up, you might be interested in reading it when I put it online (probably tomorrow). Beavan actually throws two breaking balls, a slider and a curveball. But I’d concur when you say his change is his best secondary.
by mrkupe on Jul 9, 2025 3:07 AM EDT up reply actions
Definitely interested
I think the biggest issue has been the diminished velocity since being drafted as a hard thrower, though his control and command seem to be becoming above average. Shades of B.J. Hermsen. I just think if Owens is considered a back of rotation arm and he’s a lefty, then Beavan, with similar stuff from the right side probably doesn’t grade out too high. In my mind he’s become a solid second-tier arm by TEX standards with the Povedas, Boscans, Beltres and Kirkmans and there’s nothing wrong with that. All of those guys could be useful, major league arms. The depth is inspiring.

Royals fans are getting too excited about him. He’s clearly improved, but 1) he still has no power 2) his stolen base success ratio remains mediocre. Another player with a lot of thick propaganda.
Great tools, and he’s cut his strikeouts a lot this year, which is good. He’s also still very young at age 20. But given the entirety of his track record, I’m not going to fully accept a breakthrough based on 73 games. His walk rate is still too low for me to completely trust him.
He has star tools, yes. But I want to see more before concluding that he’s learned to use them fully.

What are your thoughts about Cord Phelps?
At 23, he has hit well at both AA Akron (.296 avg, .346 OBP and .743 OPS), and upon promotion to AAA has been tearing it up: .366 avg, .423 OBP with a 1.015 OPS. I know Kipnis may get in his way, since they both play 2b, but I feel like he really is producing well enought to be in the conversation for a call up at some point. by John Sickels on Jul 7, 2025 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions
The problem is...
That I think he’s dominating only because of the curveball. If he’s pitching backwards (using the curve to set up the fastball), that’ll work in A-ball because guys don’t know how to handle the breaking stuff. As he advances…it won’t work. I haven’t heard reports that are positive enough about his fastball to make me believe he won’t struggle as he advances.

Just a friend who saw him pitch and said the fastball wasn’t impressive and he threw a ton of curves. Small sample size obviously, but I didn’t see anything that really refuted it based on what I read after the fact.

His curveball is his best breaking ball, but he is succeeding because he is able to locate his fastball. He consistently gets strikeouts with his fastball, curve, and change.

Greatly improved over last year, and I like the cold-weather high school arms as sleepers. he’s rather hittable and I don’t have a scouting report newer than April, so pending that I would not see him as a Top 100 guy just yet. I have seen Kila enough over the years to have a firm opinion of him.
If given enough time to adjust, he can be a .240-.250, 20-homer hitter with tons of walks…Ken Phelps basically. However, the Royals don’t trust him. If he gets a chance, he’ll have to get off to a hot start immediately because if he’s hitting .200 after 20 games they will pull the plug.

I'm not overly worried about Cosart's injury
but that might be due to the fact that I’m on vacation right now, so I haven’t been able to read about it much. All I know is that he’s got a sore elbow? If there is a big concern with the injury, then yes, I put Lamb above him, but I am a huge fan on Jarred Cosart, but not as big of a fan on John Lamb as I probably should be. I think the issue I have with Lamb is that he’s pretty overrated by a few on this site, and when prospects get that type of hype, I often end up personally underrating them. However, I do love Cosart, he’s got great stuff and if the control he’s showing this year is legit, then he will be a potential ace for the Phillies in a couple years. Great stuff, great control, and a groundball machine are three tools that combined will make you a terrific big league starter, and I see all three coming together for Cosart.

I can get that...
Its my problem with guys like Franklin and Trout…sure they’re great, but people have a tendency to start overhyping The Next Big Thing. The reason I have Cosart below Lamb (or will once the PP Top 25 non-Top 100 gets published) is that Lamb has better numbers at a higher level at the same age. Lamb’s performance in Wilmington suggests a true breakout, and the fact he’s been getting better every month of the season is exactly the kind of trending pattern you want to see.

He has some of the better natural middle infielder actions I’ve seen in the league and he is a pretty smooth looking fielder, but I’m not yet sold on his range and his arm is definitely below-average for the position. My initial impression was that he’s a viable option but that most teams would prefer a player who has better natural tools for the position. I’d personally want him at 2B, where he should be a plus defender.

If Britton’s GB% at the MLB level is anywhere close to what he’s done in the minors, he’d project to be in the Top 5 in groundball percentage. Obscure-ish Padres question
The Padres have three young Latino lefties who nobody talked about entering the season doing some impressive things. Juan Oramas, 20, was invisible in Mexico last year but now owns a 79/16 ratio and 2.15 ERA across 67 innings.
Jose De Paula, 20, was injured after just 10 NWL innings, but came back to the Ft. Wayne bullpen in May and just got turned loose as a starter last month and has given up only four runs in 28 innings since.
And big-ol Pedro Martinez, 19, stayed back in the Dominican when the organization was unimpressed with his conditioning last year, but is harnessing his stuff in Eugene with good K and R numbers (and ugly walk counts) so far.

What do you make of Diory Hernandez as a possible solution if Yunel Escobar continues to try to drive Bobby Cox into an earlier retirement? After a slow first week back from the injury that kept him out for the first half, he seems to be back at the production levels he had last year. Give him another big league shot after another 50-60 PAs?
by realitypolice on Jul 8, 2025 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions
Uh, no
Doesn’t take enough walks to offset a complete lack of power, doesn’t have enough usable speed on the bases, and his size makes durability a big ?. All his value in his bat is completely tied to his BA and his lack of power brings to ? whether that’ll continue in the bigs.
His scouting reports as a defensive SS are a little hazy, but I’d think I’d remember if he was considered a defensive whiz. I do recall that his arm was considered fairly strong though. I know that we moved him between 2B, 3B, SS, and CF (all within a month) to increase his versatility.
The Braves have been prepping Diory as more of a UTL guy in the last few years. I’d be very happy if he comes anywhere close to what Infante gives us now.

In a recent a post regarding the young mans no hitter, you mentioned he has little left to prove in AA. When I look at his underlying stats, they don’t seem to be all that impressive. He seems to walk too many batters while not striking out a large number of them. It also looks as though his ERA has benefited from several unearned runs he’s allowed this year.
I’m not one of those fans who believed he was a viable replacement for Halladay when the Jays acquired him, however I did think he could be a good number 3 starter with a few all star years mixed in. Given his background not only as a player but as the son of an instructor, and the personal make up. Do you think that he would be a successful Director of player development. The reason I ask besides the obvious. Is about 2 months ago when there were huge rumblings about Cal joining the Orioles KL dismissed it as a publicity stunt. I think that opinion is very incorrect. I don’t think you hire a person of Cal Ripkens status as a ploy. I think KL has dismissed this man’s history. When the Orioles were respected around the league for player development his father was a key figure, and he had a bird’s eye view. I have no idea if Ripken is well-suited for the job or not.
Being a good DPD requires a very different skill set than being a good major league player or being a good clubhouse leader. You have to be good at bureaucratic manueving. You have to have a good understanding of human psychology. You can’t be a wuss and too weak to manage people, but you can’t be a giant asshole either. You have to have a feel for scouting and understanding players on your own, but you also have to be good at delegating responsibility.
I’m not saying that Ripken can’t or won’t be a good DPD, but his resume as a Hall of Fame player with great makeup does not necessarily translate into front office success.

I’ve heard similar things that he has “made adjustments,” and certainly his BB/K/AB marks are better in the majors than they were in the minors, which is extremely unusual. . .how many players hit better in the majors than in the minors? Short-season A: ages19-20. 21 for a guy coming out of a four year college in his draft year is OK.
Low A: ages 19-21. 22…depends. 23 is old.
HighA: ages 20-22. 23…depends. 24 is old.

I gave him a Grade C in the book this year because we had no pro data and the scouting reports from college pointed to a substandard breaking ball. Numbers this year look very good at the A-ball levels, and his K/IP is much better this year than it was in college….perhaps a sign that the breaking ball is truly improving.
I’d say B-/C+ right now, pending some scouting reports.

One of the things I’ve been wondering about is if it takes high-strikeout players longer to adjust to the major leagues. “Seiler Rating 4D6: Roller was a late-round pick of the A’s last June, but he didn’t sign after going on an absolute tear last summer on the Cape. That tear convinced a few scouts that he might have enough talent to start at the Major League level, but his spring dampened those expectations, as his only average or better tool is above-average raw power. I like Gosselin but see him as more of a good utility type than a future starter.

Wil Myers/Wilmer Flores
What are their potential ceilings? Both top 30 prospects?
by ahs430 on Jul 7, 2025 4:08 PM EDT reply actions
myers
Love both these guys. Both could be Top 20 by end of year. Ceilings of All-Stars, which doesn’t mean they will get there of course.

Age advanced mirage or legit prospect who had a slow start?
by theatlfan on Jul 7, 2025 4:13 PM EDT reply actions
Breaking 2 rules here, but I figured it’s safe since, if nothing else, it may provide decent marketing material later.
With the AS game @ hand, who on any roster (or any level really) would you like to say “I was in on him waaay before the others caught up”? Or even give an “attaboy” to a guy you never thought would do it…

AS
To be honest, I haven’t even looked at the All star rosters yet. I have been too busy with other things.

He’s a prospect but overall BB/K is pretty weak. Grade C.

Pirates Pitchers
Colton Cain and Justin Wilson
Which of these two is the better prospect? Wilson has very nice numbers at AA, while Cain has struggled in his short time in the low minors.
by Domino427 on Jul 7, 2025 4:17 PM EDT reply actions
hmm
Apples/oranges thing here. Cain has a higher ceiling I’d say, but Wilson will get to the majros a lot sooner and has less risk

sorry john, but my membership just activated and i been waiting all day
do you think thole has a future as a starter? or will his lack of experience and HR power cause him to be at best a backup
stats, they are seriously never in Francoeur's favor

thole
I don’t see Thole as a long-term starter for a good team.

Hector Noesi
Any reports on what his arsenal looks like? His numbers are outstanding.
I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

Is there still hope for Aaron Crow?
I feel there is coming off a year off but man his stats aren’t that good. Heard its been command but the stuff is there.

Rank CF in order
Hi John … rank the following CF three years from now.
Andrew McCutchen , Colby Rasmus,Cameron Maybin, Julio Borbon, and Drew Stubbs.
by bryeic on Jul 7, 2025 10:46 PM EDT reply actions
Personally, factoring both ceiling and floor
(I’ll try and be unbiased, regardless of my name)
Rasmus, McCutchen (close, but I like Rasmus’s power/power potential) as the top 2, mainly because both are proven and both have no holes, at least compared to the other three.
Stubbs, Borbon, Maybin. At this point, I think floor has to have a bigger emphasis than say if these guys were all in AA. As such, Maybin, to me at least has the lowest floor and the biggest holes. That puts him in last. Stubbs gets the nod over Borbon, again because of the better power potential.
Some people will rate Maybin much higher due to ceiling, which may be the best of the bunch, but his chance of failure is too high for my liking at this point. I think the top 2 (Rasmus and Cutch) are ahead of the other three to a point where a gap becomes noticable, but below those two, I think its more preference than anything.

the O's sign Hector Veloz
Thoughts John? Maybe a profile is in order!
Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.
by birdman on Jul 9, 2025 2:23 PM EDT reply actions
Veloz
seems to have enough defense to stay at 3rd base and has a solid bat. Some scouts aren’t certain he’ll hit, but I like what I’ve seen of him. The biggest and obvious detractor is the fact that a 16 year old has already tested positive for steroids. Not only is it bad from a baseball standpoint but a health standpoint.
I’m not sure what the O’s are doing here with the big bonus, but talent is talent I guess.
