Ack...

…I just checked, and you just did one with Perez and Friedrich. My apologies.

Tim Collins/Pastornicky

I am curious to see how you would grade Collins and Pastornicky as of mid-season 2010. Thanks.

How about Montero vs Smoak?

Although Smoak appears ahead as of now, it would be interesting to see what the Mariners thought process might have been.

Brandon Belt vs. Freedie Freeman/Yonder Alonso

Would love to see this considering how well Belt has performed thus far.

by smay24 on Jul 16, 2025 11:45 AM EDT reply actions

Agreed

Belt is drastically underrated.

I was coming here to suggest Freeman vs morrison

So why not just add morrison to the fray and make it a 1b prospect battle royale of sorts.

I know there was a Freeman vs Morrison discussion question before but it was A. 2008 B. almost even in the poll, and C. we didn’t get john’s thoughts on the subject.

I’m really trying to figure out what kind of prospect Belt is.

He’s obviously not the same player he was in college, and his numbers this year are getting so crazy that you just can’t ignore them.

I mean, who the hell puts up a .384/.487/.661 line with 30 doubles, 5 triples and 15 homers in 307 at-bats along with a 60/57 BB/K ratio. The BABIP is obviously a little high, but this is a guy that I’m seriously warming up to.

Somebody needs to write up a good, detailed scouting report on this guy.

Not to mention that Belt has swiped 18/26 SB this year…..

I have a buddy who works in SF's front office

I will see if he can give me some insight. He is one of my few legit contacts so hopefully it pans out.

It took me awhile to remember where I saw it

I knew that I just read something on Belt in the last day or two. It’s from KLaw’s chat yesterday:

Corey (Stockton CA)

Could you please give a report and ETA for Brandon Belt?
Klaw (1:49 PM)

Haven’t seen the new swing yet, but talked to a scout last week who had - got him a lot more upright and stable and it’s (obviously) made a huge difference. Could be just a year away, maybe a year and a half. Potential impact bat … or excellent trade bait this month.

I just don't see how you can compare Belt...

…to guys who’ve been playing the minors for two more years. I’d think Belt/Jonathan Singleton would be a better match.

How can you not when this is his first year in the minors and he has been putting up stats that are off of the charts?

by smay24 on Jul 16, 2025 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't understand what you mean

I think it is obvious that Singleton is the better comparison.

Both were later round picks from 2009 who have put up huge numbers in the low minors. How does it make more sense to compare Belt to players from the 2008 and 2007 class in the high minors?

Comparison

Brandon Belt: A & AA: .386 2B:29 3B:5 HR: 15 RBI’s:71 BB/K: 61/57 OPS: 1.14 SB:18
Freddie Freeman A & AA in 2009: .282 2B:27 3B:0 HR: 8 RBI’s: 58 BB/SO:37/60 OPS:.771 SB:1
Yonder Alonso A & AA in 2009: .292 2B: 24 3B: 0 HR: 9 RBI: 52 BB/K: 41/46 OPS: .838 SB: 1

Freeman had 2 years experience but younger before 2009 and Yonder Alonso had 1 year experience before.

Prospect Tournament

I think that it would be pretty fun to take the top 16 or 32 players of a position and have a Prospect Smack own Tournament Edition. There will obviously be some great debate/interesting takes on all of the different players.

by smay24 on Jul 16, 2025 12:33 PM EDT reply actions

Great concept

I don’t know how well it would work in practice but if you take the top 25+honorable mentions and throw them into some smackdown tournament it could be really interesting. Main problem would be picking actual “winners” in a lot of the matchups especially when their respective strengths are on different areas. Also would probably have to split hitting/pitching.

Sky Kalkman: So I think the Braves should trade for Alex Gonzalez and his .296 OBP. Anyone else?

Will McDonald: Yunel Escobar should get that done.

Eric Simon: Which poor-hitting Alex Gonzalez did they get again?

Will McDonald: Didn't the other one retire?

Adam J. Morris: I wish an Alex Gonzalez had been traded for a Brian Hunter. Or a Bobby Jones.

Jeff Sullivan: So what does anyone know about Tim Collins?

Eric Stephen: Not as good as a Tom Collins.

Eric Simon: Seems like a bad talent swap for the Braves. How important is attitude?

Adam J. Morris: Hard to say on attitude. We aren't there, we don't know what the issues there really are.

Will McDonald: The pro-Braves people are overrating both attitude and Collins tonight.

Eric Simon: What teams are over/underperforming to this point?

Jeff Sullivan: Reds overperforming, Cardinals under.

Jeff Sullivan: Cards are the way better team.

Adam J. Morris: Twins underperforming.

Jeff Sullivan: The NL West is ridiculous, meanwhile.

Adam J. Morris: It seems like Cincy really wants to make a big deal.

Jeff Sullivan: I think Cincy wants to prove it belongs.

Sky Kalkman: Orioles are underperforming.

Adam J. Morris: Not against Texas

Eric Simon: So who else gets moved at the deadline? Roy Oswalt?

Jeff Sullivan: Ty Wigginton! Ty Wigginton is an All-Star infielder.

Sky Kalkman: Can Wiggy reenter every game the rest of the year?

Jeff Sullivan: Why would you ever take him out?

Jeff Sullivan: Any big predicted standings changes in the second half?

Jeff Sullivan: I say Cards blow by the Reds.

Sky Kalkman: I'll take the Twins and Cards and Rockies.

Will McDonald: Do the Rangers get to play the Astros anymore?

Eric Simon: Phillies get healthy and make a run.

Jeff Sullivan: NL west has four legitimate World Series representatives.

Will McDonald: I think Boston makes two good moves and gets a playoff spot.

Eric Simon: World series predictions?

Jeff Sullivan: Yanks/Cards. Cards win in 7, because This Time It Counted.

Adam J. Morris: Rangers vs Braves. Elvis Andrus is series MVP, and Neftali Feliz closes out Game 7.

Eric Simon: I'll go Yanks Padres. 1998 rematch.

Sky Kalkman: Rangers/Rockies, because who the hell knows?

Jeff Sullivan: Would love to see Texas emerge from the AL.

Will McDonald: Rockies/Red Sox.
