Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress
Some vintage aircraft are visiting Lawrence today, including a restored B-17G Flying Fortress and a restored B-24J Liberator. I took my older son Nicholas to see the planes today, and the $12 "get inside the plane" tour was worth every penny. You could also purchase a ticket to actually fly in the plane, but that was a bit out of our price range. Maybe someday...it would certainly be a peak experience.
I asked Nicholas (age 11) which aircraft he would rather have flown in combat. He said "the B-17" and explained that it looked sleeker and more durable than the B-24. Interestingly, this is what most World War II bomber pilots felt at the time.

I have gone in both as well a couple years ago
I think they were the same ones. But the B-17 flew all across Western Washington at a low altitude a year or 2 later and it was so cool to see. I actually saw in on the T.V flying over a M’s game an hour after it flew over me.
…they should send down Huntington & Nutting, because they aren’t ready, either. - royshowell

I became intrigued with the B-24 when I read my former college professor’s book Wings of Morning. The crew from that book felt the same way when comparing the B-17 and B-24, and unfortunately they somewhat confirmed that feeling when they were shot down.
By the way, that’s the book I definitely recommend to people that want a personal look into the life of bomber crews in WWII. Great read and not academic at all.

My dad's best friend's father was a ball turret gunner
Magnificent aircraft that I have been fortunate to see fly several times.

I'm a fan of the B-17
althought I am also a fan of the B-52, since we are going to be using it for almost 100 years
