Prospect Tournament?
It has been suggested that we conduct a "Prospect Tournament," sort of like a huge Smackdown/Community list combination. Are you interested in something like this? How would you suggest it be organized?

Sounds fun. Two overall brackets … hitters and pitchers. Each side of the individual brackets divided into NL and AL prospects. Ultimately, the top two prospects — one from each bracket; a pitcher and a hitter — have a World Series showdown.

GREAT! idea
Lots of possibilties. By division, league, level ect. I agree there should be at least two brackets. But maybe multiple? As in Corner Infielders. Outfielders. Middle Infielders+catchers? (to limit the number of brackets?) Then finally pitchers? I also like the idea of doing a bracket for each league. With the finalists in each league advancing. So you get the top 2 prospects from each league (AZL,NWL,MWL,CAL….ect) facing off against eah other in the final bracket.

I'm going to say no silly divisions
Don’t divide the prospects into brackets by league, or by age, or by level, or by position.
Here’s how I would suggest doing it. John can pick out X number of players (I suggest 60, but I’d be great with 92) and seed them according to his own preference. Who gets matched with who doesn’t matter, these things work themselves out over time. After John picks out those players, we’ll then have a vote to determine 4 “play-in” prospects who will receive the final seed in each of the four brackets - this ensures that if the community thinks a particular prospect is worthy of notice, said player will get into the tournament. And then you vote.

Sure
Though that would mean there is little value other than #1. For example, a Bryce Harper could lose in the first round if he comes up against Dom Brown, while a Randall Delgado or whomever might make it to the final four if he gets lucky enough with his opposition. An alternative would be to divide by brackets of position types (middle infield and catcher, 3B OF and 1B, LHP, and RHP) so there is some idea of who is the best prospect at a key defensive position, for example.

why would they get matched up in round 1?
I’m pretty sure Dom Brown would be one of John’s top prospects, and would likely get a No. 1 seed. Do you think Bryce Harper is going to be seeded low enough to be matched up against Dom Brown in round 1? I’m pretty sure John likes Harper a bit more than that . . .

He is saying it can't get seeded like that and should be done randomly
because the first few rounds will be giveaways as the prospects really aren’t that close.

I love the idea.
I would use the NCAA tournament as model. 60 teams + 4 Play-in Smackdowns for sleepers and honorable mentions to bring the field to 64 players.

If it is supposed to have community involvement, I think it couldn’t hurt to get their input on prospects. You could easily make one list, have people throw out prospects, and have John use his judgment. I’d suggest making 1 post per player people would like to see and use the +1 system but that would get ridiculous.

Sounds good
But… Based on what? Community polls?

Love the idea...
would like to see some debate time before people are asked to vote. I know that sometimes, after we’ve debated a specific slot in the community list, I want to change my vote.

For Position Players: Position Specific Tournaments
Think of it like World Cup Qualifiers. Each position’s top 10 (top 2, judged by you, would get byes) prospects fight for a spot in the “finals”. Top 2 prospects from each small bracket advance and then a larger tournament takes place between the top 16 offensive players (not necessarily top 16, but top 2 from each positional bracket).
Pitchers would probably have to be a standard 32 pitcher bracket type of model.
The rationale for position specific is that it reduces the large amount of workload associated with having one large 64 or 96 prospect tournament, and while the same number if not more prospects are evaluated, it is easier to manage. Also, it is easiest to compare prospects of the same position because tired arguments such as the lack of value of being a defensive first baseman, that have already been rehashed to death, can be avoided.

Or, for pitchers
you could do 16 world pitchers vs. 16 American pitchers

two brackets
32 in each pitchers and hitter mixed in together, last two out of each bracket in the ultimate Showdown, of ultimate destiny
Players who should be in the Hall of Fame: Pat TIllman, Dwight White, Donnie Shell, L.C. Greenwood, Ray Guy, Steve Tasker, Greg Llyod, Andy Russel, Cris Carter, Kevin Greene and Jerry Kramer

Do the Smackdown and let us vote after we read it

Community Rankings
I think we should go with the preseason community rankings that most of us voted on. Go with like the top 64 (minus the ones that are not eligible anymore) and seed them according to their preseason ranking. That way we can vote on them now in a smackdown and see how much our opinions have changed on players in 4 months or so.

I don't like the idea of seeding
The best part about prospect smackdowns is evaluating/debating two relatively similar prospects. A March Madness-style tournament would be pretty boring for the first few rounds — a matchup of Mike Trout vs. Gorkys Hernandez or Jeremy Hellickson vs. Chris Withrow would be pretty lame, imo.

addendum
I guess I’m not so much against seeding as I am against a huge mess of prospects of different varying abilities being stuck into the same bracket.

Brackets by Location/Region Hitters & Pitchers Seperate
Make Brackets of the players origin or birthplace. Latin Players, Southeast, West Coast, Mid West, Northeast, Far West(Aisian), Canadian, Southwest, and so on. I think it would be fun to see where the majority of our studs come from and the quantity of talent from some of our regions. I think this would be different!

just do random prospect smackdowns
like the lawrie vs ackely one… it was really good
even tho ackley is rated a better prospect by many… we saw that lawrie might be a better prospect after all
by matthewmafa on Jul 17, 2025 11:35 PM EDT reply actions
I love me some guess the prospect
and isn’t the endgame for this kind of floating towards the top 5 or 10 players anyways?
So maybe incorporate stat lines without revealing who the player is? This totally twists the nature of the exercise, and probably makes for a bit more work, but it would be interesting to see where guys landed compared with stat lines…
maybe even throw in some guys from 5-10 years ago…

This seems like a neat idea but...
it also seems like a very difficult thing to pull off. The seedings would require a lot of work to make the matchups competitive all the way through. It might be better to just do a number of smackdowns with multiple prospects instead of the standard one on one face off. Ideas could be toolsy OF types(Jennings vs. Trout vs. Brown), catchers who might change position(Montero vs. Norris vs. Myers), young LHP, upper level arms(Pineda vs. Minor vs. Britton), mid range catchers(Conger vs. Romine vs. Arencibia vs. Sanchez)…you could even do some team specific ones like Royals hitters(Moustakas vs. Myers vs. Hosmer), Braves pitchers(Delgado vs. Teheran vs. Minor), etc. My picks there probably aren’t the best options, but I think it would be easier to work out on your end John and could provide some interesting discussions.

Top 50 lists
You could take your top 50 list from preseason, drop all the graduated players, and then take the top 28 or so from each list + any needed draftees + some risers from this year (a la Jarred Cosart or Jon Singleton) and have a 64 team field, with one side of the bracket pitchers, one side hitters. Just use the natural seeding from those lists and don’t worry about matching up positions or anything.
Have smackdowns of each matchup letting us vote after you do the breakdowns.

RHP vs. LHP
32 RHP and 32 LHP each on one side of the bracket.
by smay24 on Jul 18, 2025 11:28 AM EDT reply actions
I almost think it has to be separated positionally.
That’s really the only way it would have value. This way we get an idea of, say, the top 32 middle infield prospects, which seems far more valuable than a list that can mostly already be assumed as it is.
by RedSoxFaithful on Jul 18, 2025 2:01 PM EDT reply actions
If you want to do that, it needs to be less than 32 players per position. This shouldn’t take 6 months, and it will with that many players/polls/discussions if you want the community to have any say at all.
by jfish26101 on Jul 18, 2025 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, you're right
Which is why I was suggesting maybe something like the 4-part breakdown somebody else mentioned. Maybe LHP, RHP, C/2B/SS, 1B/3B/OF?
