College World Series: TCU vs. UCLA

Looking forward to this one...Gerrit Cole!

I predict that TCU wins this one, 5-3.

Is this Cole vs. Purke?

Because that could be an epic pitching matchup

No

Purke pitched TCU’s opening round game.

3-2

I’m thinking UCLA wins this behind a strong effort from Gerrit Cole

Cole

Cole is looking downright nasty. That 97 mph fastball with that tight slider is looking good.

Would this be Nationals draft pick?

No, that is AJ Cole

This is the former Yankees 1st Rd pick

Rats.

I have just made myself look rather foolish.

not unless the nats really start to tank

as it is right now, they are above the Orioles, Astros, Indians, Royals, Mariners, Pirates, Brewers, and the Diamondbacks (8 teams, meanings the Nats would have ~9th overall pick, if all top 8 picks this year are signed) and I don’t see him dropping that far

Two best teams left?

I certainly think so, and this should be a hell of a game.

Ha

Both really weren’t even close.

small gripe

not a lot of tilt on the slider/cutter. If it is going to be that tight I would think some more lateral movement would make it a more successful pitch.

Off topic

I just read the recent blog posts at Right Field Fog, why is Josh Spence pitching in the Cape while ASU is in the College World Series? He may have missed the entire year, but isn’t that something he’d want to be a part of if he’s healthy enough to pitch?

by jar75 on Jun 21, 2025 10:03 PM EDT reply actions

spence

I believe his focus is now on trying to get signed so he can start his pro career. He’d probably look better against wood bats than metal.

Also, I think he’s redshirting this year . . .if he pitched in the CWS, he’d lose that year of eligibility. Makes sense for him to get his work in while preserving that year of eligibility, just keeping his options open I suppose.

I didn't realize he was redshirting

That makes a bit more sense then.

by jar75 on Jun 21, 2025 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions

yes

I think he probably ends up signing with San Diego though, no reason not to if they’ll cut him a halfway decent check (and if he’s healthy, I think they’ll do it). If he really planned on coming back to school and proving himself for the draft next year, I think he would have just shut it down completely.

I'd hate to be one of his teammates

I’d have a huge problem with this if I was one of his teammates. This guy is putting everything behind himself. If he’s a redshirt, he’s part of the team. He should be there. Not to mention the little thing about the College World Series. He needs to be there getting better, soaking in the atmosphere, being a teammate even if he’s not playing.

well, technically

We haven’t yet figured out how “not playing” and “soaking in the atmosphere” makes somebody better, and he is playing, just not for Arizona State. I have a hard time giving him too much crap about it when college programs often use (and in some cases, use up) pitchers with little regard for what it might do to their ability to avoid injury later. The relationship between a school that offers an athletic scholarship and the player who accepts said scholarship is one formed under mutually beneficial circumstances. Schools take scholarships away when they determine the circumstances are no longer beneficial to them, and players should feel the same way about breaking said agreements. I’m sure Spence would like to be there, but he’s also got the rest of his life to worry about. He’s got to do what he thinks is best for his future.

UCLA Wins

Cole looked downright nasty all night except for one inning. His final stat line was still very impressive - 3 ER in 8 innings. I’m guessing on the rest but I think he had 11 K’s with 5 hits and 1 BB.

I thought it said he had more K's

13 or 14
