5/29 MILB Thread
Fort Myers and Tampa are pretty much all we have early on today. Jesus Montero is 2-3 with a 2B and Ben Revere, who has more steals than strikeouts so far this year, is 2-4 and pushing .400 for May. Deolis Guerra pitched six scoreless.
Other starters to look for later -
Wade Davis, Carlos Carrasco, Jay Jackson, Scott Elbert, Jordan Walden, Mat Latos, Scott Barnes, Trevor Harden, Blake Beaven, Mark Rogers, Jeff Allison, Dan McDaniel, Simon Castro, Trey Haley, Gregory Infante, Hector Noesi, Wilmer Font

along those lines,
i’m pretty sure the most unimaginative name to give a child would be daniel mcdaniel jr.
human beings, who are almost unique in their ability to learn from the experiences of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

Hosmer is 3-4 with a double
he is going to be more than just fine. not going to lead the MWL in HR’s like Moustakas did last year, but he will put up a solid line. has a pretty decent line as it is, really.

Taylor is just ridiculous.
I’m not sure what the Phillies should do with him as he’s totally blocked at the moment, but I really hope they don’t trade him unless it’s for Roy Halladay.

And people were saying Medlen was overshadowed...
I think Morton is the second best pitcher on that staff and should be rated ahead of Medlen. I really like what he’s done this year. Obviously, Mr. Hanson is #1 on that staff. Oh, and I haven’t forgotten Tony Armas Jr. ;-)

Another unimpressive outing. I was really high on this kid.
4.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 2 K
Sporting a 6.75 ERA on the season. Anyone have any insight into his struggles this year? He hadnt pitched in ten days… so there’s something going on there.

DL
He had been briefly DLed with a non-arm injury IIRC.
Well, it’s only 20.1 IP so far. Some of it is flukey, some of it is a hitter-friendly park in the Texas league, some of it is him apparently having a control fit and driving his BB/9 way up over 5. I think LT he is still fine, he is only 21 after all. Right now a .404 BABIP and 25% LD rate are really hurting him, and his FIP isn’t nearly as bad as the ERA.
Not trying to say he’s actually having a solid year - he’s not. It’s just not the disaster you might think seeing that ERA and BB/9.

Cubs
I-Cubs beat Memphis 5-0.
Steve Clevenger - 1/4, 1 R, 1 RBI.
Blake Parker - 1 ip, 1 h, 1 K.
Those are the only two guys that really grab attention in terms of prospect value, IMO. A bunch of spare parts may get a cup of tea here or there. JR Mathes had an excellent outing - 8 shutout, 5 hits, 2 K’s, but he’s a system arm.
Tennessee lost a doubleheader to Huntsville. A lot of makeup games from all the postponements earlier this year.
1st game - 4-2.
Jay Jackson - 5.2 ip, 2 h, 1 run, 3 bb, 1 K - solid outing, although control is still a work in progress. His stuff is playing real well, though.
Brian Schlitter - BS, L, 1.1 ip, 4 h, 3 r, 1 walk, 1 K. Power arm in the Scott Eyre trade has some potential, so worth noting.
Brandon Guyer - 1/3, hbp, cs.
Tony Thomas - 0/4.
Blake Lalli - 1/3, 1 r, 1 2B, 1 BB. Behind the plate with the doubleheader and Clevenger bumped up. I’m not saying he’s anything special, but he’s had an excellent year.
Marquez Smith - 2/3.
Darwin Barney - 1/2, bb.
Game 2: 3-0 in 8.
Jeremy Papelbon - 3 scoreless, 4 h, 1 K. Finally back from injury.
Alessandro Maestri - 1 scoreless, 2 BB’s, 2 K’s. Really, he’s Michael Wuertz, which is a positive comment.
Marco Carrillo - 2.1 ip, 1 bb, 2 K’s - strike thrower with average stuff has worked his way back. Don’t be surprised if he’s in the AA rotation soon, perhaps replacing Chen?
Jake Muyco - 1.2 ip, 3 h, 3 runs, 1 bb, 2 HR’s. Like Parker, a former catcher, although the stuff isn’t as good, i think.
Tony Thomas - 0/4, 2 K’s. Really in the toilet offensively these days.
Darwin Barney - 1/3, bb.
Welington Castillo - 1/4, K.
Brandon Guyer - 0/3.
Blake Lalli - 1/1. .368/.419/.509 in 114 AB’s.

Daytona/Peoria
Daytona lost to Palm Beach 7-4.
Dan McDaniel - 1st loss of the year. Not hugely concerned, as it had been 12 days since his last time out due to all the rain outs, and last time, he gave way for Z’s rehab start. 3.2 ip, 4 h, 3 r, 3 bb, 5 K’s, 1 WP.
Tony Campana - 3/5. Think Juan Pierre-ish.
Starlin Castro - 2/5, 1 RBI, 2 E’s. Defensive tools are supposedly there and it’s a matter of consistency developing.
Jovan Rosa - 1/4.
Jake Opitz - 2/3, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 BB. I was very intrigued with his offensive tools last year.
Peoria lost to Great Lakes, 8-7 in 10.
Justin Bristow - 5 ip, 5 h, 5 runs, 3 K’s, 1 HR, 2 HBP. Still not there yet.
Ryan Buchter - BS, 1.1 scoreless, 2 h, 1 bb, 1 K. Gotten from the Nats in the Matt Avery deal, lefty has some intrigue and could see High A/AA later this year.
Chris Huseby - L, 1.1 ip, 2 h (1 solo shot), 1 r, 3 K’s.
Junior Lake - 2/5, 2 K’s. Average up to .250, which is solid, considering his awful start. .150ish isop is solid enough, considering how much development he has left. .276/.290/.418 in May.
Josh Harrison - 1/5, 1 HR, 3 RBI’s, 1 R. Nothing else he can show at Peoria unless he’s going to get regular IF time, which is unlikely.
Josh Vitters - 0/5, 2 K’s.
Kyler Burke - 1/5, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 K’s, 1 Assist.
Nelson Perez - 2/5, 1 R, 1 K.
Michael Brenly - 2/5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI.
Ryan Flaherty - 1/1, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI.
