You're the GM! Washington Nationals Edition

You woke up this morning and discovered that you are now General Manager of the Washington Nationals. You're 1-7. Is it too early to panic, or are major changes needed? And if so, what changes?

What are you looking for in the June draft? How do you turn this organization around?

The first thing I’d do is have a good cry. Maybe question why my god has chosen to do this to me, muster the last remnants of my self respect, and then go to work.

- Draft Strasburg. Pay him. Cue choir of angels.
- Milledge and Dukes need to get regular at bats, regardless of how well they’re doing from day to day. Playing against AAA guys doesn’t do anyone any good, especially after a weeks worth of games.
- Hope Kearns plays his way into a tradable commodity, and deal him for anything at the deadline.
- Deal Dunn at the deadline. He’s going to hit exactly 40 HR’s and OBP .390 - teams will want this. Maybe the economy recovers a bit in the next few months and the Mets realize that’s the bat they need. Either way, deal him for prospects.
- Let the kids play. See what Zimmermann and Martis can do.
- Lose more games than anyone else and get the #1 pick for 2010.

Disagree on Milledge

Milledge has never looked like a valuable commodity if he can’t handle center. Dating back to when he was in the low-minors, I never thought he would have enough steals, homers, or average to justify a corner spot, and that the Mets would need to trade him because he wouldn’t be worth carrying with Beltran already occupying center. Now that he’s shown that he can’t really play center, he’s looking a lot more like a fourth outfielder in the long-term. A good fourth outfielder, but a fourth outfielder nonetheless. For his career, when he’s hit well it’s been quite closely tied to his batting average, and I’ll be a bit surprised if Milledge can hit .300 over a full season in the majors. I think he’s a .775-.800 OPS guy, maybe a second division starter in a corner but not someone who is really going to help the team move forward.

As for Dunn being the bat the Mets need, offense isn’t their problem, starting pitching is, and the last thing that team needs is another left-handed corner bat.

I reraise the disagree on Milledge with a pro Lastings comment

He may not be a CF- has the athletic ability to do so but hasn’t got it down clearly but I still think he has a good shot to be a valuable offensive player. His 2nd half was very encouraging he needs to play. The Nationals sending him down was for one of lamest reasons I have ever heard from an MLB team. Yes they have too many outfielders who have similar skills that’s the GM’s deal not Milledge’s forcing a roster move at risk of breaking a player you invested a lot in is just stupid.

Draft Strasburg- sure or not so sure- He’s is so hyped I mean so hyped why not draft and trade for the moon- get 3 close to contributing SP with big upside alas I kennedy P Hughs and something else or Joba and Hughs and something else- Boras will encourage this and do the leg work for you.

If you do draft Strasberg don’t rush him from Gods sake just let him develop
Trade excess outfield for pitching- pray Kearns keeps hitting and trade high, Willingham is not a fit-
I’d be calling Angels today

This string on injuries is a great time to start making offers- they need to aggressively trade now
don’t be cheap on the draft - you may be able to turn Strasberg into something but be aggressive ala the Royals on SP by taking 3rd -4th rd guys with 1rst rd talent but signability issues and pay them

by ribman on Apr 18, 2025 4:50 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I draft Steven Strasburg.

That’s obvious.

Beyond that, I’d like to see Julian Tavarez dumped in favor of getting Garrett Mock major league time. Jason Bergmann’s also looked good at AAA, so he deserves another shot over keeping a second lefty like Wil Ledezma. After all, you’re not trying to win this year. Jordan Zimmermann shouldn’t be rushed, but I’d say you want him up after 10-12 AAA starts. That’s late May, early June. They need to be playing Jesus Flores every day, and they should cut Wil Nieves, who as the third catcher will do absolutely nothing in the long-term for the team.

Guys like Dunn, Nick Johnson, and Austin Kearns should at least be offered as trade chips, hoping for salary flexibility and middling prospects. I’d keep Willingham, as his bat is so much better with regular playing time, and have Milledge and Dukes get regular ABs. Milledge does deserve to be in AAA from what I’ve read though, so make sure you follow through with punishments.

Finally, Joel Guzman should be the guy to take Wil Nieves’ spot. He might not have any strike zone discipline whatsoever, but he’s still a guy who can play first, short, third, and left, while not really taking away ABs from anyone in particular. He had an IsoP of .190 last year in the Int’l League, so that talent is still in there somewhere. He’s still only 24, and you’ve got nothing to lose as the worst team in the league, so why do you need him in AAA?

And draft Strasburg. Draft Strasburg. Also, go college pitching/hitting in this draft in the 10-15 round range and pay the ones who’ve fallen well.

by Andy Seiler on Apr 17, 2025 4:43 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Jesus Flores

I’d almost be in favor of sending him down. He was rushed big time, and his career has looked exactly like it should for a guy with shaky plate discipline in High-A being jumped all the way to the majors. Let him go to Triple-A where he can work on his hitting without the pressure of being a major league catcher. It’s not like he’s vaunting Washington into contention as it is.

by Fanon on Apr 18, 2025 10:35 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I can now say the Nationals listen to me...

At least partly. They’ve sent out Wil Ledezma and brought in Mock and Bergmann. However, they let Shell go instead of Tavarez. Idiocy. Also, I think they’ve rushed Jordan Zimmermann. Too bad. Last, they let Josh Bard go instead of Nieves, which is fine if they’re purely about money, whatever. But now they just have 2 catchers. Good.

by Andy Seiler on Apr 19, 2025 10:23 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well

Acta also said that if the guys they just brought up failed they’d send them down and bring up new guys, and keep doing it until someone succeeded. What a mess of a team.

by Fanon on Apr 19, 2025 10:43 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Acta really has no say...

He’s like our Rangers manager Ron Washington who says enough things that every once in awhile one of them comes true. Babble enough and your GM might actually do something you say.

by Andy Seiler on Apr 19, 2025 11:03 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hmm

1. Draft Stephen Strasbourg. Then, draft the BPA regardless of agent or cost. Sink a lot of money into the draft.
2. Work to trade Adam Dunn, Austin Kearns, Nick Johnson and maybe Josh Willingham at the deadline for prospects. Maybe see if you can use someone like Johnson or Kearns to acquire Jeff Niemann (depending on how the Rays look) or another out of option pitcher or pitcher with potential but that have seen a stock drop.
3. Have Manny Acta sit down and have a heart to heart with Lastings Milledge about his behavior issues, and if he works on them, start him in RF or CF.
4. Elijah Dukes starts every day.
5. I do my best to lock up Ryan Zimmerman relatively long term and then start an ad blitz that paints him, Strasburg and maybe Dukes as the players that will lead Washington baseball to the promised land.
6. Lock up Manny Acta for a couple more years.
7. Sit down with Dimitri Young, explain to him that his career is over, but that you want to find a job with him (maybe hitting coach) so he can work with Dukes and Milledge as well as the rest of the young bats you can find.
8. Go back to Latin America. This time, though, use a transparent system so nobody accuses you of skimming money. Also stop skimming money.

what im going
1) call up lasting millage agian
2) move dunn, willigaham, olsen, nick, belliard so a couble of decent minor leaguer.
3) sigh ryan zimmerman to a big contract and let him be the face of the francis
3) im starting dukes, millage, and kearns play the OF
4) draft strastburge and make sure he sighs
5) lock up manny acta
6) reach out to other countries for some minor leaguer.

Dunn

As much as this team isn’t in contention, I don’t know if moving Dunn is the best move. He’s not taking ABs away from anyone nearly as much as Captain Deadweight Austin Kearns is, and the Nats’ homer leaders last year were Zimmerman and Milledge with 14 and RBI leader was Milledge with 61. That kind of offense is demoralizing, and in terms of maybe getting other free agents to go there, it helps that they can show Dunn’s big bat in the lineup as a sign that Washington’s affiliate is, in fact, a major league team.

Economy

If any team can survive in this economy, it’s Washington. Government expanding like crazy means dollars are flowing into the Nationals’ market.

  1. - Make sure I have an ironclad written and verbal agreement that I have three years to turn the organization around.
  2. - Draft and waste little time in sign Strasburg.
  3. - Use my 2nd round pick on the best player available, preferably a college pitcher.
  4. - If a decent offer comes along, look to deal one of Willingham, Kearns or Johnson. Call up Milledge to serve as the 4th outfielder.
  5. - Sign Zimmerman long term.
  6. - Ride out 2009, hope they show signs of life but expect a dismal season but a high draft pick to select a premier prospect.
  7. - Build around young pitching, Strasburg and Zimmerman in ’10, McGeary and college ’09 draft pick in ’11.

stay the course

platoon eli dukes, roger bernadina, and austin kearns in CF and RF, with dukes playing everyday in one or the other.
start josh willingham in LF everyday. dude can hit.
start adam dunn at 1B everyday. dude can hit, and is an absolute abomination in the OF.
give nick johnson spot starts at 1B, 2B, and C so as to keep him healthy.
callup lastings milledge after he starts mashing in AAA, and either give him kearns or willingham’s PT.

they need bernadina to take a step forward as a hitter and play excellent D in CF. he can be a defensive anchor that could hold the rest of their horrid D together.

as for the pitching, i’m working on that myself. they have a huge opportunity, though;

brian mccann: derek lowe's got the best slider i've ever seen
john smoltz: yeah? and josh bard's the best catcher i've ever thrown to.

I trade everything that is not nailed down

- I would trade everyone that has any kind of value that is in Arbitration.
- Trade for players that are premium defenders
- Put all my saved money in my scouting department
- Start scraping the bin and trading for AAAA players with unfilled upside. Hope you find the next Ryan Ludwick

re: Nats for 2020!

let’s see

since you’re not going to be “this year’s Rays” any time soon,

dump all the veterans for prospects. cut worthless baggage like Dmitri Young, Julian Tavarez if you can’t dump them onto someone else.

1) Don’t skim money on the draft
2) build up your Latin American academy
3) sign Stephen Strasburg even if he might go this way of Mark Prior before he even takes the mound
4) add plenty of depth with every draft from 2009- on
5) stop signing aged veterans just to put on a show of entertainment
5b) seriously why did they not sign Mr. Crow? when they signed Dmitri Young? weird. things like that HAS GOT to stop.
Let’s hope for the Nats that they don’t go out and sign Ponson in the off season, or something.
6) play the youngsters, ALL of them any of them! Does it matter that they might lose games?

and just pray that it can’t get worse.

Maybe

Don’t draft guys with firm college commitments unless you’re willing to overpay them to not go to college?

by Fanon on Apr 18, 2025 10:45 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Play this lineup until the ASB:
Guzman-6
Johnson-3
Zimmerman-5
Dunn-9/7
Dukes-8
Willingham/Kearns-7/9
Flores-2
Belliard-4
Hope that Willingham, Kearns, Belliard (as well as maybe Josh Bard and Willie Harris) build value and trade them.

Play this lineup after the ASB:
Guzman-6
Johnson-3
Zimmerman-5
Dunn-9
Dukes-8
Milledge-7
Flores-2
Hernandez-4

-Draft Strasburg and BPA, focus on college pitchers and hitters during the draft.
-Improve international scouting/signings
-Fire Manny Acta (good motivator, bad game manager)
-Continue to sign scrap-heap risk/reward guys like Young/Belliard/Hector Carrasco/Esteban Loaiza/Willie Harris, but trade them at the deadline instead of signing them to stupid extensions

Nothing Much...This year

For now just 1) Draft Strasburg and 2) Close Shell

In the offseason, splurge on Bedard or Lackey or even Myers and sign a starter like Brad Penny or Doug Davis or Miguel Batista

A rotation of

1) Bedard/Lackey/Myers
2) Zimmermann
3) Martis
4) Penny/Davis/Batista
5) Olsen

isn’t a bad start.

Also, trade away Lannan, possibly in a deal involving a shortstop.

PS: I like the batting order.

Punt '09, improve for '10, compete in '11

The biggest problem this franchise has right now is a lack of payroll flexibility due to a bunch of $5-7mil commitments to part-timers, bench guys, and mediocre starters. Luckily, a lot of those (Kearns, Johnson, Dmitri Young, Belliard) are coming off the books after this season, which should leave them with some money to play with. A low-revenue team (not really a small market) like the Nats can’t afford to pay $5mil for production they can get for league minimum.

Starting pitching obviously needs to be addressed. Bringing in 7 #4 starters does not magically give you a #1.

Also, this team needs a true defensive CF. That’s a big outfield to ask a converted corner OF to cover, especially if you have Dunn in LF (more on that later). To that end, here’s a couple moves I think they could make to fill some needs.

Draft Strasburg. Pay the man.

Draft Crow again. This time, pay the man.

I like the idea suggested above to sign Bedard. Between him and the 2 draft picks, you should be able to get a #1 and 2 out of that arrangement. It seems like a lot of money, but with the $20mil coming off the books from the deals referenced above, plus a few other cost saving moves below, the payroll will be close.

Non-tender Josh Willingham. This team needs to move Milledge to LF, and you can’t pay $3-5mil. for a bench guy who’s limited to LF defensively. Dunn needs to move to 1B after Johnson walks.

Try to steal Drew Stubbs from the Reds. After all, they have Willy Taveras locked up for 2 years. Enjoy the defense, and hope the bat is serviceable.

Scott Olsen to the Phillies for Jason Donald. The Phils are hurting in the back end of the rotation. They clearly have no room for Donald.

So, for 2010, your lineup and rotation is:

Guzman SS
Milledge LF
Zimmerman 3B
Dunn 1B
Dukes RF
Donald 2B
Flores C
Stubbs CF
Bedard, Zimmermann, Lannan, Martis, Whatever.

Younger, cheaper, and better than ’09’s version, IMO. Especially on defense.

Now, in 2011, you can let Dunn walk if Marrero develops, keeping essentially the same lineup, and your rotation is Strasburg, Bedard, Crow, Zimmerman, and either Martis or Lannan. There’s obviously some risk with Strasburg (TINSTAAPP), Bedard (injury), and Crow (TINSTAAPP), but if you hit on 2 of the 3, you’re a serious playoff contender. If you hit on all 3, you’re a World Series contender.

I really like the Olsen for Donald idea.

It would be a horribly stupid move for the Phillies, but if that deal is on the table, it should be taken immediately.

If Drew Stubbs can be pried away without giving up prospects/young players, gooo for it. j

1) Trade for more toolsy corner OFers with attittude problems
2) Trade for another flawed 1B, preferably with injury problems
3) Sign aforementioned 1B to an extension
4) Continue pretending the starting pitching is not a problem
5) Buy new Segway with money stolen from Dominican teenagers
6) Draft Strasbourg
7) Lowball Strasbourg so you get a 1st rounder next year
8) Blame Scott Boras
9) Re-hire Jim Bowden as a consultant
10) Trade for marquee, Soriano type player
11) Don’t sign aforementioned marquee player to an extension
12) Refuse all fair offers for marquee player at trade deadline
13) Let marquee player walk for draft picks
14) Lowball those draft picks
15) Wash, rinse, repeat
16) GO TO 10

Question

If the Nats fail to sign their second first rounder this year, do they get to use that next year and have three first rounders, or do they just lose the pick? I’m pretty sure they just lose the pick, but just making sure.

"And you just don't get it, you keep it copacetic..."

by Blicks on Apr 19, 2025 11:00 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Here's what I do.

1. Obviously, draft and sign Stephen Strasburg. Pay him whatever he wants.

2. With the second first rounder, draft whoever the best pitcher not named Crow is in the draft. Pay him whatever he wants.

3. Be willing to pay above slot with the second round pick.

4. Pick up any and every pitcher with upside that lands on the waiver wire (guys like Baek and Campillo last year). Try them out to see if they stick.

5. When someone gets desperate for pitching, try to force/trade Scott Olsen on them. Yes, I know Olsen is a pitcher’s who’s “success” has been purely flukish; that’s why I’m trying to trade him for whatever I can get for him.

6. Try to reestablish a positive vibe in the Latin American market.

7. Balester in the rotation NOW, same with Zimmermann. Go with a rotation of Lannan-Olsen-Balester-Martis-Zimmermann. Cabrera replaces Olsen if he’s traded.

8. 1B/OF needs to be Dunn, Dukes, Milledge, and Willingham. Willingham is the most tradeable guy midseason. Focus should be on getting his trade value as high as possible. Johnson should get some ABs in there once in a while (at the expense of Willingham, NOT Dukes or Milledge unless someone needs a rest) but I strongly doubt he’s going to get enough to increase his trade value enough to get something of value.

9. Entertain trade offers for Kearns (dump), Johnson (probably going to end up a dump), Guzman, WIllingham, and Dunn. The more guys can be moved midseason and the more prospects reaped, the better. Guzman could be interesting because of that flukish 2008 season offensively. If someone falls for it, trade trade trade!

"And you just don't get it, you keep it copacetic..."

by Blicks on Apr 19, 2025 11:16 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Step by Step

1) Sign Strasbourg - have him make one start per level (possibly starting with High-A - assuming he doesn’t look confused - gauge his pitchability - have minor league pitching instructors give him set game plans and ensure he sticks with them. Optimistically, he handles the minor leaguers with aplomb and is able to make 3-5 starts in the bigs by years’ end.
2) Use number 10 pick as well as (most likely) the second rounder to draft the best player available, college player edition - not safest pick, mindd you, but best pick. At 10 and 50, there will be good ones. They will shore up the mid-levels of the system. There will always be high-upside, signability HS’ers in rounds 3-25 that can be targeted, ala J.P. Ramirez last year.
3) Assuming the Milledge issues are of maturity, be completely forthright with him, and let him know that, in order to get back up, he’ll need to man-up. Accept responsibility, show maturity and a willingness to work for results. But do not sell low.
4) Listen to offers on all players aged 24 and up, barring Adam Dunn.
5) Work with my manger - Manny Acta has shown an ability to manage outside the box, which should e useful as the Nationals roster does not seem good enough to win inside the lines. Ask him for input on roster construction and try to give him a team to his ends. Let him show me that he deserves the job.

Be patient.

by ofsticksandbats on Apr 19, 2025 11:26 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

On the Acta point

I think Acta is a good manager, and your idea to hand him the reins isn’t a bad one. I think if they are going to let him have more input on players, however, they need to really commit to him even if the team is awful for the next couple years. Considering that it looks like the team is going to be awful at least through ‘10, they need to be patient. If they give Acta more control over player acquisitions and then dump him after this season or midway through ’10 it won’t be worth it, and they could end up with a roster tailored to one management style with a manager that really isn’t a fan, setting the franchise back even further.
