Thoughts
-I’m mildly surprised that Matzek is higher than Friedrich, but I don’t really disagree with it. I really like Matzek as a prospect.
-I’m a bit more surprised that Rosario is ahead of Chacin.
-I’m shocked that EY Jr is ahead of Tim Wheeler.
-I really like this top 10 and its the second best one that BA has released (first being Philly).

quick question, 2nd best one?
does that refer to overall strength of system, or do you think this top 10 is closer to what you believe it to be? I’m not a real big fan of Hector Gomez and Eric Young Jr. being placed at 5 and 6.

I'd change the order a bit
But even in the current order, I think it’s the second best list that BA has released.
I do like the overall system as well, thanks to the 2009 draft. Matthes, Paulsen, Balcom-Miller, Saunders and Scahill are all pretty good prospects.

I think this system has really good depth
and loads of upside, but it is fairly thin in the upper levels, and i think the depth starts early. Some of the upside guys will probably pan out, and I did like Brothers quite a bit pre-draft, and I really think Arenado could potentially be special, but I feel like this is more of a wait and see system on a lot of guys.
eh that’s me though.

Why is everyone so down on EY Jr?
A 2B with improving D, oustanding speed and very good OBP skills. What’s really not to like here? He’ll never be a superstar, but I would much rather have him in my system than anyone else outside of Matzek/Friedrich and maybe Chacin. To me, ranking him #4 would have been much more reasonable.

Usually when a team has four draft picks in its top ten, it’s a very weak system. Not the case here. Great system and great draft.

decent system
I’m mildly surprised on Matzek ahead of Friedrich as well. I also think Rosario is a bit overhyped right now, and I’m not real sure he deserves to be at 3. I would’ve put Arenado much higher - if that power develops, he could be very tantalizing. I also would’ve slapped Esmil Rogers ahead of probably Rex Brothers and Tim Wheeler. I’m not big on Hector Gomez right now.
I think I would’ve gone something like Matzek or Friedrich/Chacin/Arenado/Rosario for the top 5. I also think I’m not as high on this system as of right now, compared to other people, as I don’t really love the idea of Arenado in the top 5, but I really don’t love any of the other options in the system and his upside is huge. I mean, Rogers is what, borderline rotation arm or pen option? Not sold on Gomez’s bat yet. I like EY Jr., but don’t love him. Brothers is what, a pen arm with a borderline shot at the rotation depending on his 3rd pitch? I’m still not sure why there’s so much excitement on Rosario right now. Intriguing, potential to be good, but eh. I really liked Wheeler pre-draft, but that was a lackluster start with some mediocre reports, IIRC.
Maybe some of this changes by next year, but right now, not huge on the system. Probably top half, but I’ve got a tough time buying this as a top 10 system, although I haven’t contemplated all the systems yet.

Brothers
I think he’s better than just a bullpen arm. I don’t know their plan, but it seemed like they were just getting him some experience and protecting his arm at the same time. We’ll see what happens with him this year.

What do you guys see in Chaz Roe? Is he going to be anything moving on?

Was going to ask this question...
and would love to hear what happened. I thought he had an awesome arm when he was drafted.

His velocity isn't there anymore (90-91 now) but still has great breaking stuff
Projects to be a BOR starter at this point, but the Rockies are stocked with arms. However, he was protected from the Rule V, so the Rockies think he can contribute to the MLB roster. He will most likely start in Triple A next year at 23, so he really isn’t in a bad position, except depth wise.
Impossible not to have positive thoughts.
I want Sam Deduno to pitch already.

interesting case in development
His stuff has leveled out but he’s matured reasonably well as a pitcher. He’s also very durable . . . a reliable innings-eater, even one who performs as a 4-5 starter, has considerable value.
by mrkupe on Dec 2, 2025 3:06 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't find him durable
He’s barely pitched over 100 innings in the past 2 years. It’s injuries that really hurt his development.

Could be an excellent system of all the top picks pan out next year
Personally, I prefer Friedrich over Matzek for number one because of what he did in the minors this year. His K/BB of 3 was just as impressive as his 1.4 GB/FB ratio in the California League. His repetoire is pretty impressive also and is enough to put him over Matzek until he survives the transition to pro ball.
I second that Wheeler is too low here, I would put him above Gomez and Eric Young Jr.. I am slightly down on Rosario and Gomez compared to most. Rosario really needs to prove he can last for a whole season and his K/BB ratio of 55/10 does not look good in 222 PAs. Gomez also needs K less and walk more, but I believe in his bat and ability to stay healthy at SS more than Rosario at C. Personally, I would probably drop Rosario down to 7.

Colorado
Is it me or do they always seem to have an insane amount of left handed starting pitching?
They always seem to have a very good farms system too.

matzek vs friedrich
the case for putting matzek over friedrich is that matzek’s ceiling is much much higher than friedrich’s. although the ceiling may be high for matzek, many believe that he will reach it or at least come close to it. unlike, most high school pitchers, matzek is very polished, something people fail to realize. matzek profiles as a legitimate ace while friedrich profiles as a 2/3 starter, which is why i agree with baseball america’s rating.
by iam2asian4u on Dec 1, 2025 2:38 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
But looking at Friedrich's season
It seems as though he could have a higher ceiling than was first anticipated. At least by myself. Especially with the amount of K’s he put up compared to the BBs and IPs…. and surviving the Cal League like he did is fairly impressive. I would expect Matzek to have lower to similar numbers through the same point in his career…

Except you would then have to consider that Matzek is coming out of high school, and Friedrich was not.
I also agree with BA’s ranking of Matzek as the No. 1 guy.

Disagree Strongly
…with the notion that Friedrich and Matzek are on the minor league level. It is inexplicable to rank someone with no experience in the minors above someone who was about as good as Matzek could expect to be next season.
I would have:
1. Friedrich
2. Chacin
3. Matzek
…IMO, there’s a pretty decent gap between Matzek at 3 and Chacin at 2.

+1
BA seems to have this thing where first round picks go immediately to the top of a team’s prospect rankings, based on nothing but scouting reports and no (or limited) pro experience. I’d much prefer to see a ranking system that ranked minor leaguers that were actually in the minors last season, and maybe kept the new draftees off of it, or tempered their expectations some. Next season if Matzek doesn’t strikeout 10 per 9 and have an ERA under 3, BA will drop him down to #5 in the system (behind newly drafted players and guys that deserve their rankings) and Matzek will be seen as a disappointment in his first year. Matzek should be no higher than probably #3 in these rankings, behind Chacin, Friederich, and maybe Gomez as well.
A good ranking system should not only take into account upside, but also likelihood of reaching it, and proximity to the majors (increased probability that a player will at least produce something for their MLB team).

…In general I think John does a pretty good job of this, actually. We’ll see when his Rockies list comes out but I’d be shocked to see Matzek above a B, and that’s high (though Wheeler just got a B).
by WrenFGun on Dec 1, 2025 10:44 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I’d either lower Wheeler to a B- or give the B+ to Matzek. I think he’s clearly the better prospect and should get the higher grade.

It should be noted that according to the chat, Matzek and Friedrich are essentially 1a and 1b, and that both are “top of the rotation starters”.

Matzek
came off as a prick on draft day. Not saying that has anything to do with his ability but it might spell some attitude problems in the future.

I was the first to note this, but more as a cue that he may require a huge bonus from Colorado or just not sign
I don’t know how much it will hamper his progress, if at all.

Is Rosario really that much better than McKenry?
I like the latter more, personally.

Rosario
Wilin Rosario looked ugly on offense more often than not at the AFL. He also wasn’t impressive when I saw him play in the California League.
He tends to chase pitches that are outside and has poor pitch recognition. He’s also not a good contact hitter.
I’ll be surprised if he ever puts things together enough to become a big league regular.

While I'm a fan of Rosario's upside, I have to disagree with their ranking of him at 3
They also got it wrong with the power: Rosario easily has the best power in the system right now, and Matthes showed absolutely nothing when he played after being drafted.
I think what people need to understand with Rosario is that he’s still really young (20), and the fact that he looked average at the plate and improved his defense while adjusting to high A ball when he played rookie ball the year before is a pretty nice accomplishment. IMO, it’s a big mistake not to start him out at Tulsa next year to further improve his game against better players, and quite honestly, he has time to repeat AA again the next year. He really started to show something in the last months, where he OPS’ed over .800 and the power began to turn on. Trust me, I think he mashes if he repeats there again.
Overall, good list; Young and Gomez’s spots can be interchangeable based on points of views on whether you like the fact that Young has a high floor right now unlike Gomez’s extremely low floor. Arenado’s pure hitting abilities get me excited, and I would’ve loved to seen Juan Nicasio on the list, who’s a pretty underrated prospect IMO.
Impossible not to have positive thoughts.

I agree
and most posters don’t understand the reason behind Rosario’s struggles this past season, or what appear to be struggles. He jumped from rookie ball, Pioneer League, to high A ball in the Cal League at age 20! Thats a huge jump for a player at that age, and experience level. A closer look shows Rosario improved tremendously throughout the course of the season.
Rosario hit .231 in April, .204 in May, .321 in June and .296 in July, a month he finished by going 13-for-36 (.361) in his final 10 games before suffering a wrist injury. Like his offense, Rosario’s defensive play improved leaps and bounds over the course of the season, which was part of the reason the Rockies sent him so high up the chain. He was given the opportunity to work with Nuts manager Jerry Weinstein everyday, a former big league catcher himself.
Give the kid time… results don’t show the true underlying story. His potential is sky high, and at the catching position, that makes him even more valuable. Not everybody is Joe Mauer….

Chris Nelson
Call me crazy… I still like Nelson more than Gomez. I don’t really know why, but it’s more of a gut feeling than anything. Nelson obviously needs to stay healthy, but he was off to a big start in AA this year before he got hurt. He seems to have a long learning curve, but I get the feeling that he’s going to be a better major leaguer than Gomez, a player I have never liked as much as BA has. I could see Gomez as a defense guy with occasional power ala Alex Gonzalez, but I think that is his ceiling. IMO, Nelson can be a much more productive hitter than that at the major league level. It just may not be until he’s 25 or 26.
Like I said, call me nuts.

Is he just average starter or something more?
by craigpb on Dec 2, 2025 7:23 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
depends how his changeup comes along...
He’s gonna need at least an average changeup to keep lefties honest.
If not, he might be destined for a relief role with his already well above average 2 pitch mix.

My top 5....
1.) Jhoulys Chacin: Electric stuff, top 30 prospect.
2.) Christian Friedrich: Great mix of stuff from the left side, would like to see him do it in AA.
3.) Tyler Maztek: Interesting lefty, would like to see how his breaking ball translates to the minors.
4.) Willin Rosario
5.) Hector Gomez
