Boston Red Sox Organization Discussion
I'm working on the Cardinals now. The next team after the Cardinals will be the Boston Red Sox. Use this thread to discuss the Red Sox system, point out sleepers, etc.

awesome
I found their draft to be very interesting… Head, Jacobs, Volz and Younginer are nice sleepers.

I found it rather underwhelming
Renfroe and Jacobs are definitely interesting, but I wasn’t a big fan of the rest. Volz, Younginer and Alex Wilson are probably relievers and Fuentes was an overdraft. I would have liked it a lot more had they been able to sign Branden Kline.

i didnt think it was good at all
but I thought it to be interesting because of the question marks surrounding most of the picks
by another know it all on Dec 10, 2025 6:47 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with both of you.
Fuentes in the 1st round was a horrible pick.

I like Fuentes a lot actually
and I see some power projection in him. He has that kind of frame. Just raw. Love his tools, though. He doesn’t have a super high ceiling, but it was a very good pick for that point in the draft, and lots of team were hot on him.
I also very much liked this draft. High on Renfroe. Lots of interesting players taken later. Volz, Younginer… They got lots of raw talent.
by alskor on Dec 10, 2025 7:39 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
the raw talent part wasn't a surprise
Boston is obviously willing to spend the money for it. I don’t know if their scouting is necessarily superior to what other teams have (they don’t really go off-the-wall with their picks), but they diversify their holdings as well as anybody.
If anything, Fuentes might be a bit underrated. He wouldn’t be the first Puerto Rican draftee to suffer a bit from predraft underexposure. As you said he’s raw at the moment, but they really didn’t pay all that much for a player whose raw talent level stacks up pretty nicely with other first round prep players.

I really liked the pick too...
MLB bloodlines, my guess is he’s got a good approach to hitting, he’s got good athleticism, he’s got legit CF skills supposedly…
For a gamble I like it…and they can afford to do it. His cousin is arguably the best CFer in the game when he’s healthy…

Derrik Gibson
I think he’s going to be an excellent leadoff or #2 hitter.

Che-Hsuan Lin
Still a big fan of this plus-defense CF. According to minorleaguesplits, his line, adjusted for park and luck, comes out at .319/.402/.438. Granted, only so far you can go with that. He also got off to a slow start this year, before settling in. Is he a stud? Without adjusting his swing, he won’t generate enough power to be considered a stud, but he’s very good at what he does, and I think he projects well as a potential top of the order hitter.

IIRC his slow start
was due to an injury.

Sleeper....
Roman Mendez is a guy I think may come on the next year or 2
by NYSOX on Dec 10, 2025 6:58 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Same.
His stats in the GCL are silly, and he reportedly touched 97 at the end of the season.

The Others
the supposedly infallible but now fallible Anderson

I’ve been on Lavarnaway for a little while now, definitely looking forward to seeing him against more advanced pitching. Also would love to get a detailed report of his D from somewhere but nobody ever has him on their top lists. :D

Sleeper
Ryan Westmoreland strikes me as a sleeper nobody’s talking about. Could be solid #4 outfielder…. Michael Bourn upside with less speed.

At this point, I think Westmoreland is more than just a sleeper.

He’s a sleeper that nobody’s talking about. I think he could be a decent #4 outfielder with an upside of Michael Bourn with less speed.

Westmoreland
What do you suppose his grade is? I’m guessing B+. John liked him as a B last year and I would say he improved upon that
by gpellet41 on Dec 10, 2025 8:40 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I really like him
I think he deserves an A-.
by sjkqw on Dec 12, 2025 3:48 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
A- is a pretty special grade.
Westmoreland might deserve one next year, but certainly doesn’t right now.

Lars Anderson
While he went down this year(I think injury had more to do with it than most people are giving credit to), I still see him making it as a James Loney type 1B, a consistent .280/15/80 hitter.
by Archie A on Dec 10, 2025 8:59 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I still see 20-25 home runs a year out of The Viking.

I see at least that
but I absolutely wouldnt blame anyone for giving up on him at this point. I just believe in the kid, love his approach at the plate and he has impressive plus plus raw power that he will eventually learn to use.

Daniel Nava
In his case, performance overshadows age-relative-to-league, in my opinion.

He has succeeded at every single level going back to college and Indy ball.
I am going to believe until he proves me wrong.

True, he's still a prospect.
He’s probably a top 20 guy; he’s raked every single year in the minors minus an injury-plagued 2009.
Even if he’s moves off C, he could still produce at 1B or even maybe 3B for non-elite team.

Max Ramirez at 3B
That would be interesting to say the least.

The difference I've seen
between John and BA is how they grade out Max’s arm. I’ve seen John describe it as good and BA call it fringy. However I suspect that even if Max did have the arm for 3B he’s probably lost the mobility.
If he doesn’t get moved in a deal I’m fine with him as a strict DH.

He certainly doesn't have the classic corner infielders body
The Rangers stuck him at 1st for a few games in ’08, but I have to think 3B would be stretching it….

I have one question
Where the heck is Anthony Rizzo? He should be in the Top10, no doubt!
I wrote an extensive post about Lin on OTM, you should check it.

Renfroe vs Middlebrooks
I’d like to see these guys compared and contrasted. On the surface they seem very much alike, but I’m curious to see if anyone thinks Refroe can sidestep the problems WMB is having…

what does Jose Iglesias get?
a C+ or B- or what?
I’d be surprised if he gets a B from Sickles while Miguel Jean already got a C+
Any factual evidence at all towards this rumor?
Carlos Carrasco, Alex White along with Tanner Scheppers to the Twins
Glen Perkins and Beau Mills to the Rangers
Francisco Liriano and the rights to Boof Bonser + a PTBL to the Indians
(will Smoak and Feliz go to Fla. for Josh Johnson?)
by SteveHoffmanSlowey on Dec 11, 2025 9:39 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I think Jose "The Brujo" Iglesias gets a 'B'
He’s already proven that he can hold his own offensively against AA/AAA competition with plus-plus defense.
Miguel Sano is years away and has very little margin for error.
He’s a project, and has nothing to his name outside of a nice set of tools.
You have to also take into consideration that Iglesias has already essentially been ticketed in becoming the Red Sox full-time starting shortstop come 2011, barring an unforeseeable catastrophe.
His floor is a Major League starting shortstop.

Not that I actually believe the comment to be true about Iglesias
but any player with an actual “floor” of being a starting-caliber MLB player would almost ipso facto be in the A range…

His floor
is all glove, no bat SS. I think where that “starts” depends on the team. I don’t think it starts for the Red Sox.

I have to prop up Ryan Lavarnway as a sleeper
He came out of college with good scouting reports about his offensive potential. He probably will not stick at catcher due to his size, but has sufficient upside with his bat to make a run at the majors in a corner OF spot or 1B. He had an above average arm coming out of the draft and the Red Sox would not have kept him at the plate if they did not think he had a chance to stick, but his size and foibles likely will get in the way of that.
