sweating bullets

the Yankees didn’t protect enough of their relievers.

21, Did you lose anyone of value?

All the names I heard that might get grabbed, didn’t. Any info on the ones that did? Thx.

Thoughts

Corona = sort of liked him as a sleeper, but not a big time prospect. Can’t imagine him sticking with the M’s all year.

Kroenke = Good reliever caught in a numbers game. Was breaking out last year, and I think he will stick in Florida.

Jones = Fifth starter, Yankees have more than enough of them. Maybe he sticks, I don’t care.

Nova = Decent upside, but I can’t imagine him sticking on a 40 man. Too much of a project.

Somehow I dont think these were the releivers you were afraid of losing

but the other guys who they didnt lose dont do much for me, to tell you the truth.

Nova

has a decent amount of upside and good stuff, but posted an ERA above 4.5 in the FSL and was inconsistent all year. I doubt he sticks on a 25-man roster, even as a reliever.

1st pick

MLB.com has learned that the Washington Nationals will take RHP Terrell Young from the Reds organization with the first pick of the Rule 5 Draft today.

by The Colonel on Dec 11, 2025 11:43 AM EST reply reply   0 recs

from mlb.com re: Young

Young was a 10th round pick in the 2004 draft. He’s got a big arm who had a very good second half in 2008. He’s very athletic and competitive on the mound and has three above-average pitches.

With the Mets dealing Chavez

I would not mind seeing the Mets gamble on one of the intriguing depth OF available in the Rule 5 Draft like Erik Lis. Also Chris Nicoll would give another right-handed arm in the bullpen

so the A's take an OF who probably won't stick with the team even during Spring Training

and pass on a good hitting Catcher (Skelton) to whom they could have hid as their backup catcher, replacing the getting-expensive Rob Bowen.

Awesome.

facepalm.jpg

by Zonis on Dec 11, 2025 1:43 PM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Copeland

could much more easily contribute to an MLB club right now than Skelton. He is a guy with all-around skills who could be useful off the bench, though offensively over-matched as a starter.

Skelton, on the other hand, has upside in that if he can keep hitting like this he’d be a nice starter but right now doesn’t have any pop to keep pitchers honest, doesn’t have the size to really develop any and his skinny build could make him a liability behind the plate.

by nms on Dec 11, 2025 1:45 PM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

But

you could hide him as the backup and get him 30 or so starts behind Suzuki then send to AA or AAA in 2010 if he isn’t ready to stick in the bigs. The A’s have too many OF’s now as it is, adding another doesn’t make alot of sense.

by gatling on Dec 11, 2025 1:48 PM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

the As

seem to be gearing towards actually trying to win games next year.
Thus it probably isn’t wise for them to try to “hide” a guy, and basically waste a roster spot.
Plus 30 games is alot, depending on how events shake out the difference between Skelton and a more MLB-ready catcher could cost the A’s a couple wins. And they can’t afford to waste any games if they want to catch Anahiem.
Also, Kurt Suzuki is a good young catcher. I wouldn’t want to wear him out just to hang on to some fringy kid for a couple years down the road.

by nms on Dec 11, 2025 1:51 PM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Right now

Rob Bowen is the backup to Suzuki, and last year he played 37 games(not a huge difference from what I suggest for Skelton) and he posted a line of .176/.219/.286/.504, with a career line of .200/.300/.339/.639, not exactly earth shattering. Skelton’s MLE from his 2008 season is .227/.386/.286/.672, not great but better than we’ll probably get from Bowen. Factor in Skelton being 4 and 1/2 years younger with some upside to him, I don’t see a real downside to taking him and keeping him over drafting a OF who is figthing an uphill battle while we keep Bowen.

"So's your mom"-David Sloane

by gatling on Dec 11, 2025 2:06 PM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Decent chance

The A’s dont believe Skelton is a catcher. The Tigers didnt. Lots of teams apparently dont.

by alskor on Dec 11, 2025 2:55 PM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Now that

is something I could buy. I mentioned to a buddy today that I wonder if Arizona will try him somewhere else. Can he make the transition to 2B? That would fill a need for them.

"So's your mom"-David Sloane

by gatling on Dec 11, 2025 3:17 PM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

They just signed Felipe Lopez to play 2B today

But Skelton could definitely be a backup plan. At least theyll get to see him up close and see if they think he can catch. If not he can fill in a couple places, get a couple ABs NL style and be a 3rd catcher. Also, they could be planning to trade Snyder or Montero - perhaps to the Sox. Last resort they could return him or maybe find another team that thinks he can catch.

I think he could be a 2B.

by alskor on Dec 11, 2025 3:24 PM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

have you ever seen the guy play?

You would take a AA catcher, and just because he is small and kinda athletic say that he could play 2b in MLB?

The guy has played every game of his minor league career at C, except for a grand total of 3 games at 1b.
MAYBE he could play 2b someday, but jumping a catcher from AA to the bigs is hard enough… asking him to suddenly learn OF and 2b seems to be a recipie for disaster for both him personally and the team.

by nms on Dec 11, 2025 4:42 PM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Well

Rule 5 picks are never ideal situations. I think as a late inning sub he could get some time there while you basically have him as instructional, getting reps where you want him to and working with coaches every day. Far from ideal - but as you say his being in the majors is far from ideal to begin with. Let him pinch hit, use him for double switches taking out the catcher and gradually expand his repertoire. Then you get a chance to really mold him when you option him down in 2010.

My basis for thinking he can play 2B isnt off base - scouts and analysts have been saying its certainly a possible. He supposedly has the athleticism for it. Have I seen him? No, of course not! Even if I had - I wouldnt have seen him enough to tell me anything, and certainly not enough to say whether he could transition to another position. I dont see how that’s relevant. Id imagine he’ll see a limited amount of time as a sub at other positions. Are you of the opinion the DBacks grabbed him to keep him as a third catcher only? That’s pretty suspect.

by alskor on Dec 11, 2025 5:43 PM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

And Bowen is arb-eligible on top of it

Not that he’ll get a big paycheck, but the savings (probably 300-400K) would have more than paid for the Rule 5 pick.

mosebach

i like this guy. if he can improve his walk rate, he’s a major league quality starter. or at least as much of one as paul byrd ever was.

this is a great selection.

When they should be sacrifice bunting, they are buying effeminate designer jeans. When they should be fouling off pitches, they are masturbating. Always, they are masturbating.

by Lunkwill Fook on Dec 11, 2025 12:21 PM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

he's got a huge advantage, and i think he's pretty close to where he needs to be, anyway

he gets a shitton of groundballs. if he gets his BB rate under 3 per 9 IP (it was 3.5 in 177 innings in 2008), he;s already got the low HR rate, and that’s more than enough to be an effective major league starter.

by nms on Dec 11, 2025 1:38 PM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

look, blueballs

if you thought i meant to imply that byrd was not a quality starter, well, you’re part right. byrd had no business finding himself in a major league rotation; he caught a break with the phillies, and he took advantage of it, but he’s not appreciably better than any number of veteran starters in AAA. is there really anything that separates paul byrd from robert mosebach, or brian mazone, or les walrond, other than opportunity?

Palmisano vs. Skelton?

The Astros website is reporting that the Orioles/Astros cash deal was in place before the Orioles made their pick . . . which points to the fact that the Astros preferred Palmisano to Skelton . . . now given my admittedly small knowledge on the minors I had at least HEARD of Skelton, but not Palmisano, can anyone give me a comparison and maybe a little insight into what the Astros brass was thinking? Thanks.

by mestifo on Dec 11, 2025 6:36 PM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Palmisano

From what I have seen, he is much sounder defensively and if a catcher is going to stick he needs to either have above average (for a catcher) power or a glove. Skelton has intriguing potential in his ability to get on base, but that is not necessarily what you are looking for in a back-up catcher and Skelton really needs work defensively

He’s a minor league spot starter/long man type. Has an array of pitches, but nothing better than average. Maybe the Brewers call him up for the pen, but eh, I’m sort of glad that he’s gone as I’d rather see some other guys get the innings in our system. Wow, steal of a deal for the Royals. I really like Parraz and Lumsden has absolutely sucked since coming over from the White Sox.

Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on Dec 11, 2025 2:03 PM EST reply reply   0 recs

I don't know,

I’ve watched a lot of Parraz in the New York Penn League in 2005 and 2006 and in Lexington last year and he didn’t really impress me that he’d be able to bring everything together to be an asset at the major league level as a corner, and I don’t think he’ll be able to play center for much longer. Lumsden could at least have a future as a situational lefty, I think. The Royals may have a slight advantage, but it’s pretty close to even in my opinion.

by Rox Girl on Dec 11, 2025 4:35 PM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I dunno

Lumsden has collapsed from good (but lacking Ks) to bad to “something is terribly wrong”.
Hes either hurt or he needs a change of scene

by nms on Dec 11, 2025 4:38 PM EST to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I could see that,

I guess I see the possibility of him getting fixed as about as strong as that of Parraz being able to hit MLB pitchers with any consistency. Parraz is definitely the better organizational piece, as there will be at least some use of him at some level, and even that value’s up in the air with Lumsden at this point, but I think the days of Parraz as a prospect are dwindling and the days of Parraz as minor league filler are taking their place.

Sure

Every team has a “reserve list” for the major league part of the Rule 5 draft. It so happens that that reserve list is the 40-man roster. Players not on it can be drafted, and you know the drill.

Teams also have expanded reserve lists of, I think, 70 and 100 players. Players not on the 70-man reserve list can be bought for $12000. Players not on the 100-man reserve list can be bought for $4000. Those players immediately become contractual property of their new teams— there’s no “offering them back.”

The “AAA/AA phase” terminology is confusing, meaningless and deceptive and I wish they’d get rid of it.

I think...

the Mets certainly got the most of the Rule-5 draft with O’Day being a somewhat polished closer from the University of Florida and Cherry being a capable arm in the pen. I think both of these guys stick with the Mets. Minaya seems to be improving the bullpen with every turn. Granted, he traded Smith and Heilman but he’s added K-Rod, Putz, O’Day, & Cherry to a lackluster bullpen.

On a side note, its really remarkable that a team in need of bullpen help like the Rangers, Indians, and Cardinals passed and didn’t try to take someone with the upside of Horne, Whelan, Cox, and Lofgren (a lefty no less). Combine that with Jordan Brown and Eli Iorg and a team could easily add chep depth with Brown as a PH/1B and Iorg as a legite 4th OF capable of playing all the of the OF with a good glove. Seriously, the Braves couldn’t of used Brown over carrying 3 catchers and 6 or 7 OFs with only Kotchman capable of playing 1B? Also, Iorg could have been a nice get for any team.

I don't really see a whole lot of MLB use for Brown

hes a bat-only guy who hit like a 2b-man in AAA.

But I love Iorg and would have loved to see the Braves take a shot on him, but they never seem to make Rule 5 picks.

One thing the Braves don't need...

would be another OF. They already have like 6 or 7 on their roster. Potentially more if you count Schafer. But still, I think they have some holes that could of been eased some in the Rule-5 draft but wasn’t.

I can understand not taking a bat

As there are few bats ever available in the Rule 5 draft outside of OFers and speedy MI’s who have no power. These are the types of guys that are a dime a dozen and that is why teams do not mind losing one if they had to make a choice between someone at that position or a more rarer position. That being said, there were a number of successful bullpen arms that I was a bit surprised were not taken. He does not have ideal stuff, but I am surprised a team could not find a use for Chris Nicoll. He posted great numbers after converting to the bullpen. At age 24 at AA (not exactly old for the league), he struck out 11.3/9 Innings and walked 1.6/9 innings

injured

Nicoll apparently has some sort of shoulder problem. Probably scared teams off.

Me likey!

I like the upside the Pirates have taken a chance on with Veal and Santos.
Makes me think Grabow is really going to get traded now.
