The Angels future is in their minor league prospects. Once upon a time, that was an incredibly depressing statement. Those days are long gone. From the Burlington Bees in Iowa to the Salt Lake Bees in Utah, there are a lot of people to keep an eye on.
Who are the prospects who will contribute to the Angels in the near future? Who is a great long-term talent? Here are some guys you might see when you buy tickets to see the Angels in the next few years.
Jo Adell, Outfielder
At 6-foot-2, this 215 pound power hitter breezed through two levels of minor league baseball in 2017. Now playing for the Double-A Mobile BayBears, he was also invited to the Angels spring training.
Unfortunately he pulled a hamstring in a spring training game against the Cubs March 9th. He’s expected to be out 10-12 weeks with the injury.
Even with this delay, he’s expected to be in Triple-A and even the major leagues within a year. He combination of speed and power is a big boon for the Angels, and in spring training he batted .391 with a .478 slugging percentage.
Keep an eye on Adell!
Griffin Canning, Right Handed Pitcher
Canning is such a hot prospect that he’s already been invited up to the majors! After he graduated from Santa Margarita High he moved very quickly through the ranks of the minor leagues. He only needed 129 1/3 innings to make it to Triple-A and the major leagues.
The Angels have been struggling with their pitching for quite some time, so a hot pitching prospect is a huge win for the team. Canning will be making his MLB debut on Tuesday, April 30th.
No one has created this much excitement for Angels fans since Mike Trout. We’ll be excited to see his debut!
Brandon Marsh, Outfielder
This prospect has struggled to get his momentum going, but he finally got in a full season with Single A last year. It went well, and he’s playing this season with the Double-A Mobile BayBears in the Southern League as of April 1, 2019.
He currently has an average of .220 with a slugging percentage of .256 in Double-A through 22 games. He was invited to spring training with the Angels this year, so the team’s managers definitely see his promise.
Expect to see him continue to climb and make the MLB within a couple of years.
Jahmai Jones, Second Base
The clubs number four prospect has transitioned from outfield to second base. He caught on quickly and last fall had impressed Angels management. He makes good decisions as a batter and was doing very well in the fall league.
The Angels invited him to spring training and he is now playing in Double-A. Through 22 games he is hitting only .136 with a .148 slugging percentage, so he has plenty of room to grow in his current position.
If he continues to improve, you could be seeing him swinging in the majors in the next few years!
The Angels Farm System is Improving
It’s nice that the Angels farm system is no longer the butt of everyone’s jokes. With these top four prospects, you can see that there’s a lot to look forward to as an Angels fan.
