In the comments section of the first post, I talked about players likely to be of interest to the Cardinals at #19 and #43, both based on mock drafts and Cardinals history.
The Cardinals forfeited their second round pick to sigh Greg Holland (what a mistake that has been so far), but they do have a compensation pick after the second round due to Minnesota signing Lance Lynn (maybe teams should sign players before the start of spring training?).
Anyway, here at the players I think might interest the Cardinals at #75.
- Nick Northcut, 3B, Mason, OH - played this year with a wooden bat (sounds like a guy intent on going pro), and reportedly had an exit velocity of 105 MPH with a wooden bat last summer.
- Lyon Richardson, RHP, Jensen Beach, FL - has a fastball that can touch 97 and a plus slider. The Cardinals like athletic pitchers, Richardson seems to fit the bill.
- Jaden Hill, RHP, Ashdown, AR - well, Arkansas tends to have a Cardinals bias in terms of fandom, and since the Cardinals were already likely at the University of Arkansas scouting Blaine Knight and Eric Cole, I would venture to guess they popped in on Jaden Hill once or twice. Hill is a two sport star (remember, athleticism...), and has a plus changeup to pair with a fastball that touches 95...
- Tim Cate - LHP, UConn - Cate has one of the best curves in the draft, and the Cardinals do not have a lot of LHP depth in their system, if Cate is here, the Cardinals may be tempted to pull the trigger
There is usually a run on college bats in the second round, two of those that might be in consideration if the Cardinals were so inclined:
- Grant Little - OF, Texas Tech - Little put up a .378/.477/.675 slash line this year. His 37 walks to 30 strikeouts is the type of plate discipline the Cardinals look for...
- Kody Clemens - 2B, Texas - after struggling as a Sophomore recovering from TJ as a result of a wrestling mishap with one of his brothers, Kody hit the weight room and burst on to the scene this year, slashing .341/.431/.687 with 19 home runs. Not bad for a 2B!!! Kody also played 3B his freshman year at Texas and was a HS, shortstop...Kody drew 34 walks to 41 strikeouts, and the ability to draw walks is an attribute the Cardinals look for
Clemens would probably be a deal where they draft him ahead of his rankings, sign him a little below slot, and use the savings on some of the prep arms they are likely to take
Looking at the board, I think the Cardinals are likely to go prep arm here, but I would be excited about them taking either Little or Clemens here
