Welcome to the Gameday!

Tim Cooney
Tim Cooney
Scott Rovak-USA TODAY Sports

Tim Cooney as easily the star of Thursday's action as he carried a no-hitter through 8.2 innings against the Iowa Cubs. The 139th ranked prospect and 70th best pitcher in the minors, Cooney was one out away from history when Cubs second baseman Arismendy Alcantara, the 87th ranked player, slapped an opposite field single to through the hole on the left side. With two runners on (Matt Szczur walked the at bat before) and a four run lead, Javier Baez stepped to the plate to potentially bring it within one run. Cooney got Baez swinging for his seventh strike out of the night. His final line was nine innings, one hit, zero runs, two walks and seven strike outs. He threw one wild pitch and worked five ground outs to 10 fly balls, and it only took him 101 pitches to complete the complete game shut out.

On the offensive side, Hunter Renfroe, right fielder for Lake Elsinore, the Padres A+ affiliate, was 2-4 with his 15th double and 13th home run of the year. He also struck out twice bringing his total to 66 in 213 at bats (27.3%). His season line sits at 286/360/559 with a .398 wOBA and 142 wRC+.

Red Sox short stop for now Xander Bogaerts posted another excellent day at the plate going 3-5 with a double, RBI and run scored against Atlanta. In his last 10 games, Bogaerts is on fire, going 20-48 while hitting 417/472/646 with five doubles and two home runs, and four walks to 10 strike outs. He's scored nine times with seven steaks and has been a fantastic table setter for the Sox.

Other top 150 players to at least get two hits or go yard were Kris Bryant (HR #16), George Springer (HR #10 in MLB, #13 ovr), Nick Castellanos (2-4), Maikel Franco (2-4, 2B, 3B), Corey Seager (HR #7), Jesse Winker (HR #6), DJ Peterson (2-5, 2B), Kyle Parker (2-4), Billy McKinney (2-4, 2B), Randal Grichuk (HR #10), and Michael Choice (2-4). Sleeper Alerts! Kean Wong (2-4), LeVon Washington (2-4, 2B), Trey Mancini (2-4), and Manuel Margot (2-4, 2 SB) also fit that description.

It wasn't just Tim Cooney turning in strong starts for the Top 150. Henry Owens showed his dominant side by three hitting New Britain en route to a 2-1 win. He threw seven scoreless, striking out five with just two walks, four ground outs and seven fly outs. His ERA is a tidy 2.52 now with a 1.10 WHIP in the Eastern League. Through 64.1 innings this year, Owens is sporting a 9.5 K/9, 4.2 BB/9 and a .181 opponents batting average with a 3.29 FIP.

The man the call LuJax, Luke Jackson, continued to dominate the Texas League, shutting down Tulsa with six strong innings. He gave up a pair of runs on five hits and one walk with eight punch outs. Four batters grounded out with two fly outs, picking up his sixth win of the year. His ERA sits at 2.80 with a 0.95 WHIP and 2.78 FIP. Batters are hitting just .191 off him with 9.0 K/9, 2.2 BB/9 and 4.1 K/BB on the year. A minor flag is an abnormally low .244 BABIP, but that's really it with him. His stock is definitely on the rise and the murmurs of him in Arlington are getting louder.

Justin Nicolino matched his season high in strike outs with four in seven innings. He gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk with 12 ground outs and four fly outs. One batter (and Cameron Seitzer) took him yard, the fourth game in a row with a home run allowed, but he did pick up his fourth win of the year and lowered his ERA to 3.30, with a 1.13 WHIP. The pitch-to-contact approach he has works as he gets a hefty amount of weak contact, and he does not give away free passes. He's walking just 1.3 batters per nine but is also only striking out 3.9 per nine innings.
