Josh Bell at 24
If there are any doubts about the Rays really going ‘damn the torpedoes’ in terms of exhausting their supposed draft budget, selecting Josh Bell at 1.24 would pretty much squash said concerns.

It depends on how concerned
teams really are about his signability. Currently, it is a HUGE question mark.

Holy crap, that is some serious uppercut.
Jose Flores: .831 OPS in High-A last year. .529 OPS this year. Ouch.

A's rumors
I’m hearing A’s want Springer but not sure he’ll fall to them. Then they’d take Mahtook. After that they’d look at a college arm, thinking Sonny Gray would fall to them. And their possible surprise dark horse backup possibility would be Nimmo.
They’re not on Cron at all, or Bell. But they’re looking for a highly rated college arm to fall to them if they don’t get Springer or Mahtook.
by DavidS on Jun 6, 2025 3:51 PM EDT reply actions
I’d be very shocked it Springer falls to the A’s. They need to make other plans. Mahtook would be a similar type of player. I can’t see the A’s going with a HS guy there unless there really isn’t any decent college guy left at that point.

I’m hearing the Cubs prefer Mahtook to Springer, and that they’re also looking at taking somebody that’s not a consensus top 15 player. Brewers seem to have an agreement with Baez. Those are two of the teams rumored to go for a bat in the first round before the A’s, so Springer could slide if the Mets get a pitcher they prefer.

LATE NOTE: Baseball America is reporting late rumors that some teams are in on a Cuban defector named Onelki Garcia Speck as a possible FIRST ROUND or supplemental pick. He’s a 23-year-old lefty who reportedly has a 90+ fastball and a big curve. I don’t know anything about him other than this vague report, but it bears watching.

I remember my history teacher in middle school telling us a story about a weird case where the border control stopped a group of people on a broken pier off the coast of Florida, and there was a huge debate on weather or not the broken pier was technically land since it wasn’t attached.

There's a ton of college arms we could pick. A metric ton. There's no reason to waste a pick out of signability concerns. At least take a shot.
I’d rather take a shot a Taylor Guerreri. The guy looks phenomenal.

Slippage
There’s a lot of potential slippage in this draft.
I think the M’s take Rendon, but if they take Lindor then it gets unpredictable.
If the O’s take Archie Bradley over Bundy that causes slippage.
If the Cubs take Speck that causes pure mayhem.
If the Pads take Spangenberg, and the Brewers take Baez that also cause dominoes to fall.
Also it looks like Bell and Swihart will drop to the bottom of the first, maybe to Rangers and Red Sox.
It’s really unpredictable now.
I’d rather have the Dbacks picks than anybody else’s today. They’re guaranteed two studs.

other years you could get a feel of the top tier and go from there. This year the upper tiers are so big that there are many comparables and it really kills trying to predict the draft

Signability
John - do you think the depth of this draft will cause signability cases to fall further than usual, as the same pick in next year’s draft will be nowhere near the value of this year’s?

Details on Garcia are fuzzy, but Baseball America has learned that he throws in the 92-95 mph range with an above-average curveball.
The agency representing Garcia, Miami Sports Consulting, LLC, has reportedly sent teams a fax demanding a major league deal
According to one source, Garcia pitched three seasons with Guantanimo, going 12-12, 4.73 over 205 innings. In 46 games (45 starts), he struck out 195 but walked 128. His last season was 2009-10, when he went 5-6, 3.40.

Talked about Levi Micheal and Kolten Wong.
Said Micheal compares to Lowrie a bit, with less power, not an exciting pick but could be a regular major leaguer, could stay at SS depending on the team.
Heard that some teams think Wong can move positions, possibly even catcher, perenial 300 hitter with 15-20 homer pop.
Then some general stuff about injuries and budgets.
