MiLB 6/29 - Texas League All Stars and everyone else

The TL All Star game is tonight, with Casey Kelly (presumably because it's his home park) going against Garrett Richards.  Game time is 7:20 pm.

Aside from that, there's already a fair amount of action going around the minors, so I thought I'd throw this out there to begin the conversation.

Star-divide

Personal cheeseball Luis Domoromo went 2-for-5 with a homer.  19 year old Venezuelan's now hitting .320 with an 840 OPS in the MWL.

the velocity disappearing was weird

From what I remember, the Yanks ran numerous tests to find the problem but I don’t recall what the found. And now, Hughes is showing good velocity again. Was it just an extended period of dead arm?

I'll be interested

to see what Hughes’ take on it is if/when he comes back at full strength. I never saw a satisfactory answer prior to the time off and this “second spring training” process. He has had a truly meandering career so far.

Reliever who converted over from catcher, was traded from the Cardinals to the Astros in exchange for Pedro Feliz (aka worst player in the majors last season)?

He just got promoted to the majors. Here are his stats this year between AA and AAA:

1.91 ERA, 33 IP, 29 H, 38 K, 9 BB.

His fastball reportedly sits around 92-95mph from what I’ve heard. Possible back end of the bullpen material in exchange for 1.9 wins below replacement level.

His much better than reported defense (people on here were citing outdated reports from last year on his defense), excellent excellent plate discipline (seriously, can’t gush enough about it), speed, and decent power is impressive.

True

I dont rember the games but, at one pouint he had not swung and missed his first 29 swings. Thats what has impressed me the most, his level swing and the power he has.

I neglected to follow my own rule that applied to Brett Lawrie last season as well: If a guys struggling, or learning, a difficult defensive position, while at a tough level to hit as well, its a good idea to cut him some slack with the bat - sometimes a lot of slack.

As soon as I saw him plsay in Tacoma this year, I knwe the glove questions were overblown as well.

I did rank him around 30, and said that I think he’s a going to be a good ballplayer, just not as good as some people thought at draft-time.

Now, I think he is going to be better than that. the REASON for my whiff is a common one for me - I make errors when a player is a concept instead of seeing them in person.

At the Power game

Taillon, Done with

3ip 1h 0bb 4k.

Looks very good. Touched 96, sat 92-94. Nasty curve. Threw two great change up. Change flashed plus for sure.

Da'Sean Butler - A Mountaineer Legend

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jun 29, 2025 8:02 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Yes

I talked to Tim Williams over at piratesprospects.com (who was at the game) and he said someone on the team said to look for 3IP and 40-50 pitches. I’d expect to see the same or something similar the rest of the year.

FWIW the hit was a very weak broken bat floater up the middle that just hit a perfect spot a few feet past 2B. It was too high at first for Taillon to make a play, but came down too soon for the SS or 2B to do anything.

Honestly, I wrote a fanpost over at bucsdugout detailing how his K:BB numbers show great control, but his H/IP show his command might still need work. Tonight’s start says otherwise. He was painting corners at the knees all night, and all three of his offspeed pitches (Slider, Curve, Changeup) looked very, very good, especially the Curve. The only concerning this (if I have to pick nits) is the velocity. I said he sat 92-94, but in retrospect it was probably 91-93, and he only threw above 94 two times, on high fastballs.

Da'Sean Butler - A Mountaineer Legend

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jun 29, 2025 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Other thing is

Much easier for a player to hold his command over a short outing. Not only is his stuff going to only be at it’s best, but he doesn’t have to worry about the muscle memory needed to define several pitches significantly over a full start - obviously, his low level helps with that too. I’m skeptical that controlling his workload THAT much will benefit him long term.

by mrkupe on Jun 29, 2025 11:07 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

So

you’re saying his command could be a mirage because he’s essentially not having to pitch tired?

Potentially by babying they are hurting his development, even if it does manage to decrease his injury risk somewhat?

I will say, although I did say above I’d expect a strict limit on him going forward, he might be allowed to go closer to 4 and 5 IP’s in the near future as he “stretches out” as it were. Remember, this was his first start in basically two weeks, so extra caution was probably taken.

Da'Sean Butler - A Mountaineer Legend

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jun 29, 2025 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions

3IP and 40-50 pitches

Seems like they’re babying him to an almost paranoid degree.

by blackoutyears on Jun 29, 2025 11:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

it’s no different than what they did with ZVR, Cain, Dodson, and Stevenson last year in State College. Taillon is the same age now as they were then, so if nothing else they are being consistent. They aren’t falling into the “damn, he’s really good, let’s move him quickly and have him pitch more” trap that they perceive to exist.

I have to applaud them for at least doing that.

I’m not expert on this type of stuff, but I’ve always been under the impression that males in that 18-20 age range are still growing. Maybe that makes them more susceptible to injury, especially considering the already very unnatural motion involved with throwing a baseball. A 22 year-old would theoretically be at less of a risk, while any 19 year-old would have the same risk, even if they have a “workhorse” body/frame.

Either way, I understand your original point Mr. Kupe, but I’d rather extra precautions and patience be taken with Taillon, even if it slows him down a bit. There’s no way I could see it actually completely prevent future growth, so let Taillon take his time.

Da'Sean Butler - A Mountaineer Legend

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jun 29, 2025 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I know

that’s what they did with the State College guys, and I’m all for caution, but 40-50 pitches at this point of the season seems over-cautious. Any pitcher is a pronounced injury risk until they’re into their mid-20s, and all the micro-management in the world may not prevent that. I think there’s something to be said for expecting Taillon to be getting through the opposing order three times as often as possible from this point until season’s end.

Well that ain’t happening. Still love him though.

Stetson Allie should be going tomorrow for State College.

Law

spoke to this btw. Basically had the same questions about surprisingly low pitch/inning limits now and their implications for building arm strength and length of development time.

Klaw (1:14 PM)
There could easily be something going on with him physically that puts such a low cap on him … but yeah, that’s pretty restrictive. How long before he’s built up to 200 innings a year? 2015? Longer? Are they losing an opportunity to build long-term muscle mass by limiting how much he throws at 100%? I don’t have these answers, but if I was the President/owner, I’d probably ask my GM those questions, because he should have the answers.

Seems like I saw Law make a comment elsewhere to the effect that he did give credit to PIT for innovating, even if he didn’t completely buy the process.

by blackoutyears on Jul 1, 2025 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions

not quite

Not saying it’s a mirage, just that it might not be as good as the numbers indicate. But I definitely believe low pitch counts can hurt development. Young arms have to learn to see batters the second and third time around, how to pace themselves, how to pitch when their stuff isn’t the very best they’re capable of. Personally I’m a fan of having a pitcher pitch at whatever level he needs to in order to have a solid chance of going six innings. Is Taillon going to learn more of what he needs to know by pitching six innings against lesser competition or three against better competition?

by mrkupe on Jun 30, 2025 1:51 AM EDT up reply actions

What about the fact that at age 17 & 18

Taillon likely threw 100-120 pitches routinely in HS and AAU games (and the 100-120 assumes that he was “regulated” b/c he was deemed to be a 1st round talent, otherwise add another 30 to the high end of this range).

So you have a musclature that powered through “full adult” pitch counts at ages 17 & 18, who then gets dialed back to pitch counts of 50 at age 19. I’m no expert but it would seem to me that the best development path would be to set a PC limit at ~ 90 or so this year, ~ 100 next year and simply manage his total innings via a skipped start here and there and/or a delayed start/early end to the season.

Subject a bit. Taillon indeed was giving the very low pitch count due to a lingering sore pec and the long layoff.

Starling Marte

It’s too bad this guy is about the only bright spot right now above the High A level in terms of legit prospects. Triple-A is pretty much baron at this point, although, Gorkys and Hague will likely contribute to the bigs in some form, along with several of the pitchers. The Curve have been shut out 3 times, scored a bunch of runs one game, and limited to one run in their past five games.

by Woo! on Jun 29, 2025 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Ya

I’m most worried about Tony Sanchez, although he finally hit a HR today (thank God). I think Locke’s been solid (solid again tonight), but you are right. Overall everyone but Marte at those levels has been a disappointment.

Indy
Gorkys Hernandez - 4-4, 2B

Altoona
Tony Sanchez - 1-4, HR
Matt Curry - 0-4, 2K
Starling Marte - 0-4, K
Jeff Locke - 6IP, 3H, 2ER, 3BB, 7K

Bradenton
Cunningham finishes with his best game as a pro? 2-4, HR, 2B, BB, K
Grossman - 1-2, HR, 3BB, K
Pedro Alvarez (rehab) 0-2, BB, K

West Virginia
Dan Grovatt - 1-4, HR, BB, 3K
Mel Rojas - 0-5, 1K (but he had a bunch of hard hit balls and his approach/eye looked fine to me)
Victor Black pitched a perfect inning, 0K; On the season he’s given up 6 hits in 14IP with 4 BB and 9K

Do you realize

That Gorkys Hernandez is now hitting around .300? That blows me away.

by Woo! on Jun 29, 2025 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Not to boast (kind of)....

But, I called this before the season. If you at what he did in the second half pre-injury, this year could be forseen.

I still question whether he is anything better than Gomez of the Brewers, but a 4th OF, defensive replacement/pinch runner has some value. He’s also still somewhat young, too.

by CabreraKilledMyChildhood on Jun 29, 2025 11:57 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

He

still has very good value. If he can post a decent average and thus a decent OBP, there’s no reason he couldn’t be a starting CF hitting in the 8 spot. It probably won’t be Pittsburgh, but somewhere else is certainly a possibility.

Even if that’s too optimistic, certainly a glove first 4th or 5th OF would make him a useful asset.

He also has a not extraordinarily embarrassing ISO of .097 so far this year. He has a .718 OPS and a .330 wOBA which is perfectly fine if his glove is as good as advertised (advertised as one of the elite CF gloves in all of minor league baseball).

If he can have a Brett Gardner glove (very high praise) which has produced an absurd 32.6 UZR/150 in the outfield, the even a .650 OPS or a .300 wOBA could make him a 2.5-3.5 WAR player.

Gardner currently has a 34.8 UZR/150 this year with only a .343 wOBA, so its certainly feasible.

Still a ways to go yet and the glove may not be that good.

Matt Curry

1 BB vs 15 K in his last ten games, after his approach being his biggest plus in the SAL. He’s not going to turn things around anytime soon, but I’d keep watching that K:BB for improvement.

by PissedMick on Jun 30, 2025 8:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, A-ball to AA is a huge jump.

He’s going from seeing guys who have breaking pitches that they can get over the plate to seeing guys with breaking pitches they can spot, and probably have a second off-speed pitch to worry about. It’s not surprising that he’d need some time to adjust his pitch recognition, especially since he doesn’t seem like a “see it, hit it” type of guy.

The question is whether or not he can adjust.

by PissedMick on Jun 30, 2025 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

It's a big jump

but he’s doubled his strikeout rate and is walking at a third of his High-A rate. Even that wouldn’t be as surprising if he hadn’t been walking more than he struck out before the promotion.

by blackoutyears on Jun 30, 2025 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, it's not promising by any means.

I’ve dropped Curry from a “buy” to a “drop-and-watch” by this point. Still, I think it’d be a mistake to completely write him off until he gets some more time against AA pitching.

by PissedMick on Jun 30, 2025 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions

According to Sox Prospects

which is basically where I get 99% of my info, his fastball sits low 90s and hits 95. He has a good curveball and a decent low 80s changeup. He was generally projected for the bullpen since his other pitches couldn’t catch up with his fastball which is apparently pretty good but he’s been doing nothing but succeeding as a starter.

I suppose that’s worked for Ryan Braun, but for a no-defense slugger (although I read a report that he’s now average at 1B after getting in better shape for this season and doesn’t need to be a DH) it just doesn’t make me confident.

He does make an impressive amount of contact for someone with his amount of power, though, so maybe there’s something there.
