Miami Marlins Organization Discussion
I am now working on the Boston Red Sox Top 20 prospect list. The next team in line is the Miami Marlins, to be followed by the Washington Nationals.
Use this thread to discuss the Marlins system. This is not a deep organization by any means, as they are feeling the effects of some poor recent drafts and lack of farm system investment. What would you do to turn this around if you were the new front office? Are there any overlooked sleepers in the organization? How long do you stick with the new uniforms before another redesign?

Saw
Yelich a few times in the SAL. Was very impressed with the kid. May not have the flashiest tools, but my gut screamed “ballplayer” every time he took an at bat or made a play in the field, FWIW.
If I were Marlins fans, I’d be excited about him.

Yelich
I don’t understand not being excited about Yelich’s tools. He showed moderate power, great speed, defense, and on-base skills. He is the guy right behind Jake Marisnick (Blue Jays system) for the next real 5-tool guy to breakout a la Mike Trout.

Oh
I agree. I’m just saying he’s not sexy when it comes to tools like a Gose or a Tate (Padres prospect). That doesn’t really matter though, cause I like Yelich better than both of them.
I don’t know if he’s on Mike Trout’s level as far as tools (he just doesn’t have the same speed), but he has a great approach for such a young kid and enough tools in my opinion to be a great player in the majors one day.

Wonder about Yelich's power though
He’s probably a left fielder as well.
Did your gut catch ‘The Big Ozuna’ later in the year when he was straight killing it for Greensboro? I like both, but prefer he to Christian Yelich as I feel he has tangibly more upside offensively (although riskier, sure) & the chance to be a better defensive player. I’m in the minority on that I’m pretty sure, but sometimes you’ve just got to go with the talent.

I saw him (Ozuna) take a few AB's
The power is undeniable, but something just didn’t sit right with me regarding him. I could be wrong though.

A few
JT Realmuto has an interesting bat as a catcher.
Jose Fernandez is their latest first round pick, and has good reports. Cuban kid who got drafted out of high school after defecting early. Good velocity on fastball, with slider and change according to PG.
Austin Brice had a good year (issue with walks), but few reports on him.
Mason Hope may also be one to follow.

GM ideas
It looks like the Marlins have decided to build superficially, buy an MLB team and hope for a few years of success. I’m not an expert, but I’ll try my hand at the GM question.
Their strategy makes sense, they need money to have a future and that means butts in the seats and customer loyalty. To rebuild this farm system then they should do the same thing. Build from the top, similar to the Twins. College age, safe major league players they can advance quickly. I don’t think they should pass on high upside guys, and the Jose Fernandez’s should still be paid a premium, but these more risky picks need to be surrounded by more guys who will help the big league team quickly.
It seems they have traditionally drafted more high risk players, so they have years of experience with this model to hone in on what works for their system. Fruits of these drafts and youth should be given every chance to succeed (Stanton, Dominguez, Morrison, Coghlan), but push these players with a solid double and triple A team of reserves, and trade them for needs if they don’t show signs of improvement.
Every care should be taken to build a core that can win, to keep these new veteran free agents from giving up on winning. Keep the team competitive and the younger players will not stagnate, and the fans will become more loyal.

Marlins
Looking at the team they currently have, they seem set for the foreseeable future at most positions - not that they can’t upgrade, but they have at least reasonable production. They could do with a long-term second base solution, and a genuine CF, but their outfield corners, and most of the infield is set, and they have a reasonable amount of starting pitching. I think they would do better to concentrate on higher ceiling, higher risk types, especially if management is willing to plug gaps at the big league level with the checkbook.

I like what i've heard about Jose Fernandez.
Maybe not the flashiest pick, but there is some potential there.

fernandez seems pretty flashy to me
If his stuff in 2012 matches his scouting reports, he sure sounds electric to me.
