Favorite Movies

I'm jammed up with stuff this afternoon and won't get back to writing work until tonight. In the meantime, another off-topic thing for you to think about: what are your favorite movies of all time?

Star-divide

I don't have a huge personal list of this....I prefer books and music to movies and I will often go 2-3 years without setting foot in a theatre. But among my favorites are 12 O'Clock High, Casablanca, This is Spinal Tap, Office Space, The Empire Strikes Back, Defending Your Life, Mother, Alien, Aliens, They Live, and the original John Carpenter Halloween.

Once

I think I’ve seen “once” about three gajillion times. I love the music and the chemistry Hansard and Irglova have together

La Vita e Bella (Life is beautiful) is another one I could watch every day

Dead Poet’s Society too

All three Lord of the Rings movies were pretty amazing

I’ve watched all of the Jaws movies a ton too. don’t know why

On a lighter note, I always laugh my butt of when I see “Forgetting Sarah marshall”

Oh, and

Just about anything from the Coen brothers. (The only thing I didn’t love from them was O Brother, and maybe the Hudsucker Proxy)

Did you see/like A Serious Man though?

From what I’ve heard, you almost have to be Jewish to appreciate the message.

by Humbled Fan on Sep 3, 2025 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

That movie was slower than Prince Fielder after an all you can eat tofu buffet.

by Cormican on Sep 3, 2025 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

It's true.

I work part-time at a Blockbuster on my days off so I can get free rentals. I literally met three customers who liked the movie. That was it.

by Boxkutter on Sep 3, 2025 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree

It was my favorite movie of 2009, and I think the Jewish tone was just a backdrop for otherwise unrelated messages.

School of Rock

It really isn’t the best movie I’ve seen or the funniest comedy, but I just love it. It simply has so much charm, a great soundtrack that really appeals to me and an absolutely fun atmosphere.

A Few Good Men is probably my favorite serious movie.

by mentalpowers on Sep 3, 2025 2:51 PM EDT reply actions

My favorites...

Varsity Blues is an amazing movie. Everyone needs to watch it. Eurotrip very funny. Avatar was pretty incredible. I didn’t think I would like it going in, but it turned out to be very good. Night at the Roxburry and Batman Forever are also two of my favorites.

I love Edward Norton Movies

Fight Club, American History X, 25th Hour are all great. Momento is a crazy movie. I really enjoyed Lucky Number Sleven.

As far as non serious movies Porky’s, The Hangover, I love You Man, Fired Up, Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison and every other Adam Sandler movie not called Spanglish or 50 First Dates.

I am sure there’s a bunch of movies I forgot but those are some fresh on my mind.

4. Miller’s Crossing
5. City of God
6. North by Northwest
7. Heat
8. Chinatown

City of God

Unreal movie. You tend to have good taste in movies although I am one of the few people that hated Fargo. Otherwise you picked some unreal films.

by King Billy Royal on Sep 3, 2025 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Are you generally a fan of the Coen Brothers? The few people I know that don’t like Fargo tend to not be either familiar with them, or just aren’t fans of their offbeat dark humor.

http://mvn.com/mlb-tossingtherosin/

by koolkerns101 on Sep 3, 2025 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not a fan of them in general

I have always found them to be overrated.

by King Billy Royal on Sep 3, 2025 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

+1 On Shawshank Redemption

Pulp Fiction, however, tops my “most overrated” list.

Generally a good list, despite the unsightly two(!) appearances of Tarantino.

by OremLK on Sep 3, 2025 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Pulp Fiction is the definition of “love it or hate it” cinema. It’s great if you view it as what it is: purely a cinematic homage that plays with and puts a new spin on old stories. If you’re a noir or exploitation fan, you’re bound to love the movie. If you aren’t, chances are you won’t like Tarantino’s movies, with the exception of (maybe) Jackie Brown.

I’m a big Tarantino fan - I think that’s evident by the types of movies I listed - however they certainly aren’t for everyone. I absolutely hated Death Proof, but everything else is cinematic gold (in my opinion, obviously). If there is one film of his that I’d consider to be overrated, it’s Reservoir Dogs. It’s a solid flick, but not nearly as good as Pulp, Kill Bill, or Basterds. But to each their own, and that’s the beauty of film: It’s open for interpretation and debate.

http://mvn.com/mlb-tossingtherosin/

by koolkerns101 on Sep 3, 2025 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I just find him pretentious and crass

I’ll admit that his movies are gripping, but I find them ultimately empty, and his narrative hi-jinks drive me up the wall. I’ll admit that it’s become something of a pet peeve for me, and is at least partly driven by how much I dislike the guy’s persona, so it’s not 100% rational.

by OremLK on Sep 3, 2025 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

How did I forget to list Shawshank and City of God? Great films.

The Professional was good, once you get past the creepy Pedophilia overtones.

by Cormican on Sep 3, 2025 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Miller's Crossing

I have seen the movie once, and tried unsuccessfully to give it a second shot, but I didn’t like it. Being a big fan of the movie Brick, and knowing that Miller’s Crossing was the movie that inspired Rian Johnson to read Hammett and subsequently write Brick, I thought I would love it… but I didn’t it. I didn’t think it was bad, just pretty uninteresting. I think one of the problems for me is trying to picture Gabriel Byrne as any sort of badass or a guy I want to root for. None of the gangsters in the movie made me feel any sense of fear. When I watch Goodfellas or The Godfather or other organized crime movies, I feel fear of the characters (if they were real and around me, I wouldn’t f*** with them, if you know what I mean?)… not the same with Miller’s Crossing.

What is it about this movie that everyone loves? I just don’t get it.

by Boxkutter on Sep 3, 2025 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s been a little while since I’ve seen it, but to me, Miller’s Crossing has three big things going for it:

1. It’s the Coen Brothers and their black comedy style is (to me) some of the best entertainment.
2. The Gangster/1930’s setting…shown in perfection, from what I can tell. Gabriel Byrne and and John Turturro are simply fantastic, as is most of the cast.
3. The twists and turns, and quite simply, the story. It’s not necessarily original, but it’s hard to spot a real flaw in it. It definitely keeps you interested the entire time, and you do become interested in the characters.

For me, Miller’s Crossing and Fargo are their absolute best films, with Blood Simple (their debut) and O Brother, Where Art Thou? falling just behind. The Big Lebowski is fantastic as well, primarily because of Jeff Bridges, but it falls just short of these four. But all of their movies are so good that cases can be made for any of them being their “masterpiece”. The exceptions would be Ladykillers (as it is a remake, and overall, is somewhat weak), Intolerable Cruelty, and maybe Burn After Reading.

A lot of people dislike The Hudsucker Proxy, but I thought it was very good as well, minus one scene (which I won’t ruin here). It may not be as darkly comedic as Fargo or Miller’s Crossing, but it was a good change of pace that has appeared more often in their most recent films.

Way, way too many to name.

The Godfather (also doubles as my favorite book)
The Godfather 2
Donnie Darko
Brick (So underrated, but the dialogue in it is better than 98% of the movies out there)
Oldboy (Favorite foreign film… so glad they scrapped the American Remake plans)
Good Will Hunting (Just a feel-good movie)
Clerks (Hilarious)
The Man from Earth (Such a smart, thought-provoking movie. Can’t stop watching it)
Before Sunrise/Before Sunset (Hope they turn these into a trilogy)
The Boondock Saints (Guilty pleasure… wasn’t a big fan of the sequel)
All the mindfucks like Fight Club, Memento, The Jacket, and The I Inside.
All the great mafia movies like Goodfellas, The Last Don, Donnie Brasco, and Casino.

Also, I am a huge fan of 80s cheese movies like Can’t Buy Me Love, The Lost Boys, Career Opportunities, Soul Man, etc.

The Godfather (Brando > DeNiro as Vito pushes it past 2)
Memento
LA Confidential (Fantastic, and the book dwarfs it)
Clerks (I’m a Jersey guy, and it nailed the mid 90s malaise)
Goodfellas (Best movie of the 90s - worst Oscar robbery EVER)
Fight Club

And many, many more.

Top 5

This changes every few moments, but right now…

1) M
2) The Third Man
3) Rear Window
4) Breathless (the original, not that God-awful Richard Gere remake)
5) Rashomon

Cripes, that makes me look like a total movie snob. I’ll try and come up with a list of movies made in the past 25 years…

by Outshined_One on Sep 3, 2025 4:54 PM EDT reply actions

That’s a GREAT list. I can’t believe I left M and Breathless off my list - both are legitimate masterpieces. Godard is among my favorite directors w/ Breathless and Bande a part.

I’m not a huge fan of Kurosawa. He’s a huge influence in film, that goes without saying, but I’ve always had a problem getting into Samurai films. However his stories are phenomenal, I’ll give you that, although I do prefer them in different/updated versions (ie Star Wars, Dollars trilogy, etc).

The Third Man is one I haven’t gotten around to watching yet. I love Orson Welles - especially his Touch of Evil, among others - but for whatever reason, I haven’t seen this one yet. I own it, so I’ll get around to it eventually I’m sure.

Newer Movies

1) No Country for Old Men
2) Wall-E

Man, seriously, Ghostbusters gets better and better

You think its not possible for it to get funnier, then you re-watch it after a few years, and my god. Classic. Bill Murray = Hero.

I was reading this whole thread looking to see if someone mentioned the Fifth Element

I love pretty much everything about that movie. Granted it’s not some legendary example of the form, but it’s probably my favorite action flick and I’ve always wondered why more people don’t seem to like it.

Faves (not specifically the best, but my favorites regardless):

Pulp Fiction, Shaun of the Dead, Dawn of the Dead (original), Night of the Living Dead (both the Romero and the Savini remake), Hot Fuzz, Ghostbusters, Resivoir Dogs, Goodfellas, Dogma, A Clockwork Orange, Interview with the Vampire, Silence of the Lambs, Clash of the Titans (original [obviously]), and many more…

Some of my favorites

Reservoir Dogs (to be honest, I like it more than most of QT’s other stuff), Shawn of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Grindhouse (Planet Terror more than Death Proof, but both would make my top 10), Thank You For Smoking, Happy Gilmore, Moon, Role Models, Stranger than Fiction, Evolution (it’s corny, but I enjoy it) and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (and yes it’s a kid’s movie, but it’s loads of fun and there’s two really awesome cast members, three if you count James Caan).

Movies are an escape

So many possibilities

I guess I’ll use as my criteria “will drop everything else if I see this is coming up on cable.” But here’s a baker’s dozen plus one:

Gallipoli
The Sting
The Breakfast Club
All the President’s Men
Thief
Broadcast News
L.A. Confidential
Hard Boiled, great early John Woo actioner, amazing shootout in a hospital
The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3 (original only)
The Verdict
The Bad News Bears (original)
Office Space
Fail-Safe (original)
Rollerball (original, best edited sports movie you’ll ever see, great futuristic sci-fi premise)

Chinatown too

Watched this yesterday again. There’s something about well-done L.A. period pieces.

fail safe

+1 on Fail Safe. I think it is a better movie in many ways than Dr. Strangelove

I got lazy and started scanning lists

But I didn’t see The Thin Man anywhere. The second one in the series isn’t bad but the later ones aren’t great. But the original is hilarious. William Powell and Myrna Loy are so good together. Funny and always drinking.
