9/6 minor league gameday

Lot of games are underway / done, so I thought I'd start one

Jesus Montero

Star-divide

Jesus Montero: 1/5 with a HR

Wil Myers:  2/4 with 2 doubles, 1 walks, 3 RBI

Brett Jackson 2/5 with a double

Craig Kimbrel: 1 Inning, 1 hit, 2 k's, no walks

Just briefly perused some of my favorite prospects, didn't get a chance to check the pitching probables

(and a little bit of filler!)

nice k’s and walks but otherwise…yikes

Weird

Don’t know if I’ve ever seen that extreme of a difference between K/BB and hits/runs allowed.

by OremLK on Sep 7, 2025 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Ya

That is nuts….i guess we can always try to look at the positives but this has been a pretty disappointing season for crow.

by logstx on Sep 7, 2025 8:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Not panic time just yet. I think he can get his act back together with a full year of MLB instruction. It’s hard to tell just how much a lost development year cost him, but I still believe in the underlying skill.

Austin Romine

Too Bad

The Yankees are so deep at catcher with Montero, Romine and Sanchez. I feel like Romine won’t get a fair shot.

by logstx on Sep 7, 2025 8:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but

Do any of us really feel that Montero will block either of these two at the catchers position?
Will be interesting to see what happens after Jorgie’s career is over.
Cervelli is decent and add to that Montero, Romine, & Sanchez.
How much longer will Texeira be a Yankee? He will certainly keep Montero from being an everyday 1B.
Never seen Montero play so I don’t know how he would stack up defensively at either C or 1B.

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.

Montero

There’s no need to rush him. The Yanks are plenty deep. If he continues to hit coming out of spring training next year, then I’m sure they’ll find a place for his bat at DH. I don’t think Marcus Thames or a healthy Nick Johnson are going to block him. If he continues to hit then I think Montero he’ll be up by June/July and they will find some ab’s at DH and spell Tex at 1B, as needed.

by BryceHarper on Sep 7, 2025 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Montero and playing time

I’m pretty sure Nick Johnson signed a one-year deal, so he won’t be blocking Montero unless the Yanks re-sign him (and I don’t know why they would)

Big Appendage Nick Franklin

… went 2 for 3 with a walk (two singles) in his first game at AA. Not bad for a 19 year old eh?

Anthony Rizzo

2-3 HR, BB. Finished the season with a nice round 25 hrs (and 100 rbis for those of you fans from the 40s).

Brandon Jacobs of Lowell > Brandon Jacobs of NYG

20 AA homers at age 21 isn’t too shabby. Let’s see if he can build on it for next year. This was a breakout year if you ask me, but he has to consolidate it and continue to develop at AA and AAA moving forward.

by limozeen on Sep 7, 2025 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah his contact rate leaves some to be desired

His 2nd half stats were pretty studly though .281/374/531 in ~200 abs

Josh Reddick

Hes good

I honestly think Reddick is a bit more talented than even his buddy Ryan Kalish is. . . and kalish is good. Reddick’s eason really turned around almost the day his friend Kalish got the call. I thgink it may have pissed him off and, woke him up.

Big game for Kalish tonight by the way - Grand slam, couple steals

When does he get a shot at playing everyday in Boston though?

It seems he is pretty much blocked for the foreseeable future. Do they need to trade him?

by Arlo Brunsberg's Swing on Sep 6, 2025 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know

… but it seems like he could share time in Cf with Mike Cameron next season, then take over full-time in 2012 if he plays well. Both Cammy and Drew are getting up there in age so ther’s plenty of room for some kids coming up - If they can play.

May the forces of evil become confused on the way to your house.

by casejud on Sep 7, 2025 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions

To me, the difference between Kalish and Reddick

Is that Kalish can play CF full time. I’m not sold that Reddick can. I will agree that their bats are pretty darn similar though.

Mike Trout

Wil Myers

Ends his first professional season out of high school with 247 PA in High A with a line of .346/.453/.512 in one of the hardest hitting environments in the minors with a 39/37 K/BB ratio while being a C/DH. I wonder how many kids out of high school can say they had that impressive of a first full season.

I wonder if he’ll get promoted to AA for NW Arkansas playoffs that start Wednesday.

by bigboy1234 on Sep 6, 2025 10:35 PM EDT reply actions

Offensively...

(AKA for fantasy value)… Is this more impressive than Trout? I’d say yes.

by Rduffiedc on Sep 6, 2025 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

SB+Power combo is arguably more valuable from Trout.

Two different questions there

As an overall hitter I would say Myers is better.

Fantasy I would say Trout is better (the power of SB)

HR

Love the power he might hit 30 HR between the minors and majors this year. If he can hit 25 HR a year from 2B I’d def. take that. Zimm, Desi, Espi definitely shoring up that left side of the infield for years to come.

After seeing him hit his first ML HR Friday live against the Pirates,

he’s definitely a man-crush of sorts for me.

He looks like he’ll put up 20-20 from a MI spot, which is terrific if the BA is there.

BA

But the problem is, that the BA/OBP isn’t likely to be there, given his minor league production.

That's a pretty strong leap to make just by looking at his numbers.

Espinosa walked 74 times in 133 games last year, all at A+. This year was his first taste of either AA or AAA, so it seems a little reckless to me to say that what he did in those leagues is exactly what he’ll be in the future.

I expect Espinosa to struggle for a little while (if he starts in the majors next year) but am encouraged by the range of skills he’s shown in the minors. He’s similar to Brandon Phillips, except it looks like It took Phillips a little longer to start hitting everything in the air, and Espinosa’s already doing it. Add in some walks/whiffs and you’ve got a player Espinosa could reasonably become in the next couple of years.

RE

I wrote a really long nice response, but it was deleted.

In short, I like him a lot. His point depends on how you interpret “BA” being there. His career norms are acceptable (if he can maintain a 270 BA) but don’t assume that is possible, SO could catch up with him.

Even if he’s Jose Valentin, that’s a hell of a player when combined with his defense and base running.

Personally, I think he ends up at SS. I just don’t see Desmond as a MLB regular.

Sorry, didn’t mean to make it sound like I was disagreeing with your take. It seems pretty reasonable. If he’s a .270 hitter, he’s going to be a stud. If he’s a .220 hitter, he can still be a decent major leaguer for a while, probably even a starter. Not too many guys you can say that about.

by limozeen on Sep 7, 2025 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Espinosa winding up with a career AVG around .270 would be a pretty low-probability outcome, I think. Not only does he strike out a lot but his career BABIP in the minors is below average, which fits what you would expect looking at his batted ball data. He doesn’t profile as a high BABIP hitter despite his speed.

I see him more as a .240ish guy with his walk rate and power bringing him up to overall offensive production right around ML average, which is fine for a good defensive middle infielder who also adds a couple runs on the basepaths with his speed. He’ll need to work on his baserunning efficiency though.

For the whole month of August

and now into September

He’s definately a top 50 prospect for me, (he will still qualify) I had him at #37 or so on my list that i came out with a week ago….

Rick Hague

2-4, 3B, HR. Now at .327/.386/.522 in 39 games in the Sally.

Pretty good debut for one of the most disappointing college players in the nation.

by slamcactus on Sep 6, 2025 11:59 PM EDT reply actions

The funny thing about him is it was never about if he can hit or not.

It was rather or not he could stay at SS. This guy(coming into the season was looked at as a 1st round pick) fell to the 3round of the draft because teams didn’t know what position he would play at the major league level. Me myself, I see him more of a 2B/OF in the future. The Nats got lucky with this pick.

Be real with yourself.

Not minors

Bumgarner had probaby his best start of his career.

7.1 IP
5 H
0 R
1 BB
7 Ks

His veloctiy looked to be back. Was hitting 93 and 94 a good bit. Average 2 seam was 91.9 and average 4 seam was 92.6 (max 94.3). The DBack’s announcers were also really impressed with his curveball.

by nyy601 on Sep 7, 2025 12:50 AM EDT reply actions

a very nice year out of him

Some adjustment issues to the majors as expected, but the fastball command has translated well and his velocity drop last year appears to be a minor blip. Even better, his secondaries have really come a long way this year. Health permitting, it’s hard not to see him being at least a solid major league starter for a while . . .and the raw potential for him to be more than that is becoming increasingly evident.

by mrkupe on Sep 7, 2025 8:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Hard to believe this hasn’t been mentioned yet: JJ Hoover with this best start in AA. 6 IP 3 H 1 R/ER 12 K 2 BB. His K% in AA is in the mid 30s.

Has he had an uptick in stuff?

by limozeen on Sep 7, 2025 12:02 PM EDT reply actions

Intriguing AA pitcher Kyler Newby turned in a good start: 5 IP 3H 1 R/ER 10 K. He’s 25, but he’s got one of the best K/9s in all of AA. I know next to nothing about him. Anyone have the scoop?

by limozeen on Sep 7, 2025 12:06 PM EDT reply actions

From the last AQA (on Aug 22)

John said:

88-92 MPH. Good splitter, has a slider. Already 25, but I don’t see why he can’t be a workable 10th or 11th man in a pen.

He was a dominant reliever from 2005-2008, with great K/9 and K/BB and HR rate, always a little old for his league though. Last year he struggled after being moved up to AA, but he’s been good this year, and even better since being converted to a starter a few months ago.
