Ground rules:

ONE QUESTION per poster.
Avoid questions that are too huge to answer in rapid fire or that will take me an hour to research properly.
Avoid questions that are actually six questions in one.

Heart of hearts, what do you expect from this fellow: is he just getting warmed up, was he a complete projection-based overdraft? I’ve gone from hoping he was Justin Upton to wishing he can match Ian Desmond, and as an amateur, he’s very tough to peg. Thank you, John.

If I had to bet money, I’d bet against him being anything more than a role player.

My logic and reason say it is way way way too early to make that call. But you said ot go with heart-of-hearts, ie, intuition, and my intuition says he’s not going to turn into a great player.

2011 Draft...

Lots of buzz that next summer will be one of the deeper drafts of the past few years… Will it be as deep or deeper than 2005? Any comparable impact bats available like from 2005 (Braun, Tulowitzki, Rasmus, McCutchen, Upton, Zimmerman, etc.)?
Thanks for your time John…

by nzach54 on Aug 22, 2025 9:05 PM EDT reply actions

2011

Hard to say of course…lots of things can change between then and now, injuries, people imploding, other people rising to take their place. But yes, it looks like it is a very strong draft. Andy Seiler over at mlbbonusbaby would have a better feel for it right now than I do, but what i’ve heard is that it should be strong in both hitting and pitching. As good as 2005? I don’t know. But certainly one of the top two or three in the last decade.

vettleson

Well all I have are scouting reports and some video. He looks like someone who should hit for average and at least moderate power to me. But I am not very good at projecting success for high school hitters….I have a much better feel for pitchers than hitters at that level.

This is why I trust John more than most

Very intriguing pitcher, yes, althoug his walk rate has shot up in Double-A, granted that’s a big jump from the Midwest League. Yes, I like the grounders with a decent strikeout rate and reports of plus stuff. Comps….I dunno. Grade right now would be in the B range I think, maybe B-, not sure yet. Need to tap Midwest sources.

by Dray1996 on Aug 22, 2025 9:14 PM EDT reply actions

rogers

He’s been terrible this year. Yes he has power potential, but he’s got to get above the Mendoza Line in the Midwest League. Power/speed combination is attractive and maybe he’s just been unlucky this year. The Rays are usually pretty conservative, so I wouldn’t expec them to rush him. I doubt you’ll see him anywhere close to the majors for awhile.

I'm not John, but supposedly the Braves made a mechanical tweak

by 306008 on Aug 23, 2025 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I think its a combination of scouting and developing

I think there scouts have good idea of what the development guys want in young players, and I think the development guys are better than most organizations at getting the best out of their pitchers. My guess is they’re better at teaching guys and getting them to make the changes than most. In my own experience, its a lot easier to see what can be improved in someone’s mechanics then it is to get them doing what you want them to do.

by nixa37 on Aug 23, 2025 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

braves

yeah I heard the same thing that nixa did, mechanical tweak to boost his velocity without significant loss of command.

Nixa’s other point about the PD and scouting guys being on the same page is crucial. You would be surprised how many teams have problems with the scouting and PD people not communicating about what they need or are looking for. The Braves have their guys on the same page.

He’s posted a .326/.378/.501 line across AA and AAA this year, after having been looked at as more of an organizational guy since being drafted. Can he sustain this breakout, and at 25 years old, can you see him ever having any meaningful impact in the big leagues?

Well it is too early to panic given the tiny major league sample size. But I do have some concerns. Plate discipline was supposed to be one of his best attributes in college, but he hasn’t really carried this to the high minors or majors, at least not if BB/K is any indication. I think the Astros just need to let him play, and I expect he’ll still be a good player, but probably not the superstar slugger originally envisioned.

Scouting in general

What are the main difficulties you face as a scout, in terms of capabilities? I’m curious more on a micro level - when you’re at the park watching Player X, what makes your job hardest or is the most difficult to accomplish?

by doron on Aug 22, 2025 9:34 PM EDT reply actions

scouting

Well the main difficulty I have right now is lack of time and resources. It is a minimum of a 250 mile drive for me to see a minor league game now that Wichita lost their franchise. Any scouting trip I make, the money has to come out of my pocket. This year I have also had family matters that have prevented me from scouting as much as I want to. I have been taking quick one-day jaunts around Omaha, Des Moines, and OKC, but it isn’t as much as I want, so I’m having to rely more on spies, video, and sources who can see more games thatn I can.

As for the scouting itself. . .well, I’m pretty confident in my ability to analyze pitchers. Hitters I still struggle with things like swing mechanics. When I’m at a park, this may sound strange, but the biggest problem I have is weather….early in the year I tend to freeze, in the summer the heat gets to me and is very distracting. I about passed out in OKC last week.

.300 with 20-25 homers is the kind of upside scouts would project for Arenado, yes.

If he gets there, he’s going to have to do a better job than he did this year. Very sharp home/road splits for him….947 OPS at home in Asheville, .670 on the road. That’s suspicious. But he’s very young and a lot of scouts love him. We’ll see.

Oh, boy, what a great question.

On a meta level, I think a lot of posters here aren’t humble enough and make (or want me to make) firm declarative statements that really can’t be justified by the available data. I used to be like that myself…go back and read stuff I wrote in 1996, I was a lot more arrogant then…but nowadays I’ve become increasingly aware of what I DO NOT know. I think this is a matter of youth, frankly….the boards have a lot of guys in their 20s, which is great….young guys are enthusiastic and we need young enthusiastic baseball fans. But trust me…by the time you are 40, if you have any intellectual flexibility at all, you will get more humble.

On a more specifiic level, I don’t completely buy into BABIP theory and I still use H/IP when analyzing pitchers even though this seems to annoy statheads.

h/ip

I haven’t been in one any discussions around here regarding the H/IP analysis tool. While not entirely useless, I’d think that the variation between defenses at all the levels of the minors would be so big (between teams, levels, etc.) as to make comparing two pitchers’ H/IP difficult to objectively measure.

by whonichol on Aug 23, 2025 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

i like the h/ip stat

when you see an inflated h/ip ratio but has a low era, that COULD be an indicator that a pitcher is getting lucky, and could be an indicator that a prospect will struggle as he advances. that being said, research does need to be done to determine if it is a mediocre defense allowing those hits, among other things. in other words, it isnt a stand alone stat, but i still thinks it’s very important

by rangersfan24 on Aug 23, 2025 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

The day I turned 40

I received a box of intellectual flexibility in the mail. About damned time as my wife said. Seriously though, if one more person tells me some guy is doomed because he walked too many guys in his first five pro starts or because his Pioneer League BABIP is unsustainable, I’m going to ralph. The implications of John’s remarks are that if you watch how players do and don’t develop over a long enough period of time, you’ll realize how ridiculous it is to think that you can predict anything specific. The hubris on display can get wearing. If I had one rule, it would be that you couldn’t say anything definitive about a player you haven’t actually seen play.

Interesting sleeper prospect, I saw him pitch in college. Good at keeping guys off balance, changes speeds well, through strikes, excellent K/BB ratio this year, but rather hittable. Possible fourth starter in the finesse category, but an interesting one. C+ maybe B-

I don’t mind it, he’s been lights out in A-ball this year and a couple of Double-A starts won’t hurt anything at this point. Stats are outstanding, scouting reports are pretty positive, it will be interesting to see where he ranks on various lists at the end of the year. I could see him as high as a Grade B prospect once I tap my sources and get reports.

Well….he is the kind of guy who can hit .230 with 15 homers and 20 steals…not sure how that would rank in terms of major league shortstops. I expect he’ll have a long career but I don’t think he’ll be a frequent all star or anything like that.

What are your opinions of Joe Cruz and Alex Cobb of the Rays?

both unheralded guys who are putting up good numbers in their own ways. Where are they relative to each other in your own mind, and what do you see as their situation down the line. Should be interesting if they want to leave Cobb as a starter given the absurd depth at Durham let alone the majors next year.

by Navi's_Navy on Aug 22, 2025 10:03 PM EDT reply actions

cruz and cobb

Cruz has strong command and has put up some nice numbers in the Florida State League…good K/BB, decent strikeouts, hit rate a bit high, low 90s, can hit 95 at times, improving his secondary pitches. Strong C+ guy.

Cobb is a year older but at a higher level in Double-A, also has a good statistical set, good K/BB and K/IP, hits a bit high, doesn’t throw quite as hard as Cruz but has a better curve. Another C+ guy. They are very even. I’d probably take Cruz since he is younger.

profar

He hasn’t been terrible, and at age 17 in the Northwest League, that’s pretty damn impressive. The Rangers tend to be aggressive about moving guys up, so I could see him starting next year as high as High-A. If it were up to me, I’d have him in Low-A.

i agree with john

but i dont think they’ll rush him. they dont have to with elvis. personally, i think hes trade bait in a year or two, unless elvis falls off a cliff. that or hell have to switch positions…

by rangersfan24 on Aug 23, 2025 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Unless the Rangers can sign him to an extension within the next couple years

I think they will start looking for his replacement. Hes repped by Boras who is notorious for not giving away FA years. And by them not Longoria-ing him last year they only have 4 years after this season left of guaranteed control. Elvis will be a free agent before his 26th bday which would line him up perfectly to sign a lucrative 4-5 year deal and then again be a FA when hes 29-30.

Based on that timeline Profar, or Sardinas, could be that guy. Profar should spend 3/4 if not all year next year in Low A, then 2012 in High A, 2013 in AA, and then 2014 between AA, AAA, and possibly the majors (he will be 21 at that time). If Elvis leaves in FA after 2014 Profar would be a 22 year old ready to step in

by bigsteve on Aug 24, 2025 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

this comment right here is exactly why

we needed tom hicks gone. we have gone soooo long knowing he wouldnt dish out the money to keep quality players, nor would he dish out money to bring in quality players to build a team. instead he threw everything he had at chp and arod. ryan and greenberg are willing to spend money to build a winning team. so writing off elvis as a ranger because hes represented by satan is not the proper approach. if hicks still owned the team, i would say you were 100% correct….

by rangersfan24 on Aug 24, 2025 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Partially correct

Who signed off on drafting Teixiera and Smoak? Who approved the signing bonus for Profar? The Rangers have spent more money than all but a handful of teams in the last 3 or 4 drafts, despite the situation they were in.

Hicks was a lot of things, but he was not cheap. It’s more complex than that.

And it is WAAAAAYYYYY too early to be worrying about Profar and whether or not they can resign Elvis. They have Elvis under control for FOUR more years. A lot can happen in that time.

well he has the tools to be a starter…but he’s got to do a better job stealing bases, he’s got 28 bags but has been caught 14 times, a poor ratio. His power hasn’t developed yet, and he’s struggling with contact after moving up to Double-A. On the other hand, he’s only 20.

Future center field starter is the ceiling, fifth outfielder is the floor. My guess is that he never quite hits enough to be a quality starter year in and year out.

What do you make of Thompson being so hittable (151 hits in 120 innings), but also having such great strikeout rates (125 K’s). Is this simply due to how many strikes he throws (only 13 walks)? What do you consider his ceiling to be? #3 starter?

I had not heard about the 97, but i’m not surprised, he hit 94 last year and with another year of maturity better velocity often happens. Yes, his velocity is up and down a bit, sometimes in the upper-80s, often higher, seems to depend on if he’s used as a starter or releiver and how heavy his workloadhas been.

I’d give him a Grade B right now.

Allie has a much better fastball and thus has a higher ceiling….he could be a number one starter or a superb closer if it all comes together. ZVR is more of a number three starter type, albeit he could be a very good one….efficient, throws strikes, etc. if his velocity picks up a bit more he could be a number two.

Slotting and Unintended Consequences

Let’s say MLB puts in a slotting system for the draft. What happens?

My thoughts: It might send more players to college baseball or trigger others to claim injuries and petition to become free agents like Loux. Maybe players try to exercise their leverage by holding out for major league contracts.

Maybe this verges on one of those research required questions, but if MLB changes the system, I hope they think it through.

Thanks.

If there's one thing you can say with certainty

It’s that the next time MLB and the MLBPA change the rules around the draft, they’ll create at least as many problems as they fix. It’s what has happened every time they’ve done it so far!

by realitypolice on Aug 23, 2025 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

guess

My guess is that they end up leaving the current system alone or with very marginal changes. Every time there is a collective bargaining year, they talk about big draft changes but always get cold feet and just tinker with it a little.

Minor league track

Manny Machado (or any HS position player). How would you progress them for their first year (assuming performance allows?

Start in GCL, then AFL, ect…?

by ADLC on Aug 22, 2025 10:38 PM EDT reply actions

depends

Well it depends on the player, obviously. some are more advanced than others. A guy like Machado would be handled differently than Joe Shlabotnick from Moose Patrol Maine.

As for Machado himself, it doesn’t look like he’s going to play this year. I would see how he looks in spring training. If he performs well, send him to Low-A to start the year. If he has problems and is overwhelmed, keep him in extended spring and then send him to the New York Penn League in June. But my guess is that he’ll start off next year in Low-A, and that would be the right move.

I would send him there with the idea that he will stay there the whole season. If he’s tearing the place up on July 1st, you re-assess and think about moving him up to High-A.

From what I’ve seen its look like a lot of similar guys there with not a lot to distinguish them… and lots of flawed older prospects and lots of high ceiling/high risk younger guys… you know?

nats

Eury Perez: very impressive speed. No power yet, and on-base skills need work, but he’s young enough at 20 to improve those. C+ prospect I think.

Sanchez I know less about. He’s hit for a high average this year but has a gawdaful 2/28 BB/K in 47 games between the GCL and Hagerstown. I will be interested in post-season scouting reports on him…can’t grade him until I talk to some people or see some video.

Heyward is always going to BB way more than Montero, so if you think Heyward’s going to have the higher average, he’s also going to have the higher OBP. I’d actually say Montero for average and Heyward for OBP.

Kris Medlen and Jonny Venters -- Starting vs. Relief

The Atlanta Braves have gotten major contributions this year from Kris Medlen and Jonny Venters, neither of whom was seen as a top prospect in the minors. (In your rankings, I believe, Medlen topped out as a B-, and I’m not sure you even ranked Venters.) Obviously, they’ve thrived since the Braves switched Medlen from the pen to the rotation, and Venters from the rotation to the pen. So what did the Braves see in these two that inspired them to swap their roles, and what can other teams learn from the Braves’ success?

Cultivating Players

Which organizations do you think do the best job of maximizing prospects’ potential, or doing the most to “add value”? I’m curious about the ways by which some players come out of the minors better than they’ve ever been, while others seem never to get any better than they started out. Is that mostly a matter of the individual player being a diva or a headcase or just plain overrated, or do some teams do a better job at training/teaching their players to improve?

That is a really hard question. My view is that there are a small handful of teams that “get the most” out of players…the Rays and the Twins are two that come to mind….and a small handful of teams that totally stink at it for whatever reason. Was his big jump forward this year expected in any sorts of way? Not many people would’ve predicted that he would lead all rookies in strikeouts, and the changeup and breaking pitches are generating a lot more swing and misses than thought, and the major league hitters haven’t been adjusting to it all. Do you see him repeating this strikeout rate in 2011, do you see him regressing or taking the next step forward, and is his ceiling closer to that of an ace since he is already pitching similar to a #2/#3 already?

by MattBerger on Aug 23, 2025 2:14 AM EDT reply actions

Martin has sucked a bit more, so he’s more disappointing. What’s wrong with him? He’s a young pitcher with command issues…it doesn’t get more complicated than that. The SPECIFIC problem and if it is fixable would take some video work or a scout who has seen him multiple times, but basically it boils down to inability to throw strikes.

well….It probably isn’t too good for him, he sometimes has problems with his swing mechanics going sour, and pinch-hitting/iiregular play is known to mess up swings. But on the other hand, just hanging around the major league team in a pennant race could be good for his emotional and knowledge development.

If he gets regular playing time in 2011, either in Triple-A or the majors, I’m not concerend. If they start using him part-time in the majors in ‘11, then I’d be worried.

Dixon has spent some time at center this year. Do you think that he will be able to continue to play center as he moves up the ladder, and if he can’t, will his bat play in a corner spot?

His bat won’t play at a corner spot without more power development. But he’s strong and young, and the power may come in time. Of course…he’ll probably lose some speed in time as well. I rate him as a Grade C right now, toolsy but still quite raw.

I live in the western suburbus of Chicago

And I have been to 5 KC Cougars games this year. I threw a comp out for Dixon a couple weeks ago - Brian Jordan. The kid is built just like Jordan, and he even has pretty much the same swing and approach at the plate.

I am only an amateur scout, but I cannot see Dixon moving to CF (he has mostly played LF this year). He is already a big kid, and honestly doesn’t take the best route on fly balls all the time. I think he is limited to a corner spot. The arm is decent though.

Because he doesn’t throw that hard, scouts will be skeptical until he shows he can get major league hitters out. But I believe in meritocracy, and he deserves a full and fair trial in Triple-A next year. if that works out, then he deserves a full trial in the majors too.

by miraclemets on Aug 23, 2025 9:54 AM EDT reply actions

Woah

Prospect, yes. Top 100, for me. Top 50 for some, but that is a stretch. Ahead of Freeman, behind Hosmer? That is such an odd question, since the two are going to be very similarly ranked, and both ranked quite a bit ahead of Belt. I know some posters here are high on Belt, but I haven’t heard too many good things said about him elsewhere (at least not top 25 prospect talk).

by auclairkeithbc on Aug 23, 2025 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions

K. Goldstein recently reported that he heard of a scout who put a really high number on Belt, so there are some believers. Regardless, I continue to be in awe of his LD%. Even if minor league ball-in-play numbers are sketchy, putting up near-30% percentages at two levels is one of the craziest stats I’ve ever seen.

by limozeen on Aug 23, 2025 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

well

john might think highly of him. that is possible. but it is a pretty tiny range of players that squeeze between hosmer and freeman, if there is anyone between them at all.

by auclairkeithbc on Aug 23, 2025 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

This wasn’t really an argument about his placement so much as a statement of how others believe and a somewhat unrelated note about his ridiculous stat line.

by limozeen on Aug 23, 2025 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not sure what this back and forth is about. there is pretty much zero space between hosmer and freeman, so it would be incredibly unlikely that any prospect would clearly be ahead of one and clearly behind the other.

by auclairkeithbc on Aug 23, 2025 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Right, I’m not talking about that at all, so we’re not actually arguing about anything. I just thought I’d interject an interesting tidbit on Belt that I’ve heard recently, and happened to respond to your post because you talked about him being “top 50 for some, but that is a stretch.”

For what it’s worth, I think Belt is probably a borderline top 50 prospect in this year’s offseason, since it’s a pretty weak crop and there have been a lot of recent graduations. He’s on such a ridiculous hot streak that it’s impossible to say how good he really is, but I like his chances if he is truly capable of getting even 80% of the solid contact the stats show him getting. A 30% line drive rate across two levels is truly remarkable, so much so that I don’t have any idea how to translate it into skill or future value.

by limozeen on Aug 23, 2025 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

In the book list, which is split between hitters and pitchers, he’ll likely rank in the 20-25 range of the hitters if current thinking holds and depending on what research reveals. I saw him in college and he’s made a lot of adjustments since then apparently.

I was a huge fan of mitchell before the injury. . .tools are excellent, polish improving, and makeup off the charts. With the injury, it is wait and see…reports on rehab are positive, but speed was his best attribute and if that gets reduced, he’ll have to take the other parts of his game forward. But I really like him alot if he’s healthy.

by John Sickels on Aug 24, 2025 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Lofton

I had the opportunity to watch Lofton when he was at UofA and early in his career with the Indians during spring training, and Lofton had no where close to the power potential as Mitchell at the same age. He was simply a slap and go guy until halfway through his career. Mitchell was putting up 10-12 homers a year at LSU, and has a much bigger build than Lofton. Mitchell is a solid football frame (6’0", 205 pounds) while Lofton was 150 pounds soaking wet early in his career.

Not saying Mitchell will have the career that Lofton had. Lofton is a borderline HOFer. But he has more power potential. I could see more of a Johnny Damon type offensive profile

Very interesting player, Carpenter. I don’t think he’ll hit many homers, but if he can keep the BA and OBP high he could at least be a good bench guy. I don’t see a challenge to Freese in ST, but if he gets off to a slow start or gets hurt again, Carpenter could be up a year from now.

The outlook on Poreda is "DUCK!"

His mechanics are such a TOTAL mess right now, I think the Padres would almost be better off telling him to go home, don’t touch a baseball for 6 weeks, and then try from the ground up. Haven’t heard whether it’s a real injury that put him on the DL, or they’re doing essentially what I just said.

I think Bowden is a much better bet. Poreda is completely fouled up at this point and there is a high risk he never does anything. Bowden can at least be a decent reliever and could still start for some teams.

A healthy Ranaudo is a potential number one, ace starter.I will leave the comparisons at that.

Do you think one of this season’s best breakout players can keep the ball rolling? In his favor could be the arguments he’s finally healthy + he’s finally figured stuff out as he was sort of fast tracked since being drafted. Cons of course are his body of work prior to this season.

Chapman's another candidate.

He needs innings. Never should’ve been shoved into a minor league relief role.

by slamcactus on Aug 23, 2025 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Disagree. You don’t need to force Chapman into throwing tons of innings below the MLB level. This way, the Reds keep his innings down and have a power reliever for the stretch drive if they so desire.

by limozeen on Aug 23, 2025 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Why keep his innings down?

He doesn’t have an injury history and wasn’t pushing anywhere near any kind of reasonable limit. You can keep a guy’s innings down by having him go between 3-5 innings per start and still get his arm accustomed to throwing every 5 days.

by slamcactus on Aug 23, 2025 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought they did it too soon

I would have given him another months worth of starts, but I don’t think I would call it handling him badly. I figured the move might happen anyway since they would’ve needed to limit his innings at some point. plus it can give him some practice in the majors this year, give him either some confidence or a better idea of what he needed to work on.

Would love to know what you think about Tyler Moore (High A 1B) and Tom Milone (AA SP) of the Nats. Moore has a fascinating line pre and post All Star break - .196 batting before it; and about .430 after it. 30 Homers and doubles so far. Peripherals are a worry though, 110+K’s and only about 30BB.

Milone has a sub-3.00 ERA at AA, and great K/BB numbers - 9K’s/IP, and only about 25BB’s in about 130IP.
