Five More Pre-Season Sleepers to Review

Five more guys from the Pre-Season Sleeper List.

Star-divide

Ryan Chaffee, RHP, Los Angeles Angels: Didn't get activated until the end of April, made six starts in May and got killed for Rancho Cucamonga (7.58 ERA, 19/17 K/BB in 30 innings, 37 hits). Shut down again, hasn't pitched in June, now on the roster of the rookie-level Orem Owls. Still gets grounders (1.80 GO/AO), but everything else went backwards on him. No word that I can find of an injury.

Edward Concepcion, RHP, San Francisco Giants: Hasn't pitched this year. Currently on AZL Giants roster.

Brandon Cooney, RHP, Baltimore Orioles: Great start at High-A Frederick, 0.55 ERA with 19/7 K/BB in 16 innings, six saves. Promoted to Double-A Bowie, has a 2.70 ERA with a 9/4 K/BB in 10 innings so far, just five hits allowed. 4.00 GO/AO so far this year. Looks good.

Drew Cumberland, SS, San Diego Padres: Brilliant season so far for Lake Elsinore: .371/.410/.546 with 20 steals. Walk rate is a bit low (15 in 240 at-bats), but his strikeout rate is reasonable with 30 whiffs, and he's putting his speed and gap power to good use. Looks great to me.

Justin De Fratus, RHP, Philadelphia Phillies: 2.30 ERA for High-A Clearwater, 11 saves, 37/11 K/BB in 31 innings, 22 hits allowed. Need to see at higher levels, but numbers are certainly strong so far this year.

Edward Concepcion

He’ll start the season on the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes roster, in the NWL (Rookie League). Their season starts tonight, and it looks like Concepcion will be in the starting rotation, but he’s not starting tonight. He needs to work on stretching out his innings. He usually dominates the first 3-4 innings he pitches, then starts to get hammered after that.

Cooney

Cooney is a big guy, probably our top relief pitching prospect right now. Here’s a picture of him.
