2011 Top 10?

OK, let's hear it.  Who are your early picks to be the top 10 prospects in January 2011?

Mine:

1.  Jesus Montero

2.  Dustin Ackley

3.  Julio Teheran

4.  Domonic Brown

5.  Desmond Jennings

6.  Starlin Castro

7.  Aaron Hicks

8.  Bryce Harper

9.  Tyler Matzek

10.  Drew Pomeranz

Major names I'm leaving off:  Bumgarner and Perez (whose injury profiles I don't love); Stanton and Smoak (because I could see them graduating this year).

Your thoughts?

Wil Myers, huh?

Nice sleeper pick. I’m afraid mine might have been a little too conservative.

by ankur on Apr 2, 2026 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think his bat is ridiculous.

not proclaiming him the next Jesus. we’ll need to see how he adjusts and what-not… but I think he will make mincemeat out of A-ball.

Yes.

Absolutely prodigious bat.

graduations

Stanton, Smoak, Alvarez, Posey, Feliz, Matusz, Heyward, Strasburg, L Morrison, Hellickson, Mejia, Taylor, Davis, F-Mart, Escobar….

…that’s an impressive group. most won’t get quite enough ABs/IPs to be considered ROY. but i think they will all get enough to not be eligible for 2011.

Chisenhall and Matt Moore are my 11 and 12 I think.

by daveh33 on Apr 2, 2026 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Carlos Santana?

Noticed he wasn’t in your top 12 or your graduated list.

Oversight or do you expect a regression?

my bad

I think...

Moore gets hurt. Don’t ask why it is just why I wouldn’t rank him too high. I love his stuff though.

I like this list but

…out with Haroer in with Jaff Decker

by fourfingerwoo on Apr 3, 2026 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No

Decker shouldn’t come anywhere near a top 10. I can’t envision any scenario where he’s ranked that high.

by jar75 on Apr 3, 2026 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well he's almost as much of a catcher as Montero is.

if Decker destroys high-A and continues in AA this year, then he has a shot

by daveh33 on Apr 3, 2026 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He'd have to seriously improve his body

The athleticism questions will still be there no matter how well he hits next year (and he may put up massive numbers in the CAL).

by jar75 on Apr 3, 2026 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think Montero and Dom Brown are going to

and Perez will be in AAA/Arlington as a teenager.

Withrow

How about Chris Withrow? I had him in the 11-15 range— looked terrific in big league camp this year.

by ankur on Apr 2, 2026 5:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I wonder if he'll get brought up

The Dodgers have a habit of being unusually aggressive with this kind of pitcher. If he does very well in AA, it wouldn’t shock me if they pull him up to see what he can do

TheSouthWing.com - A Magazine of essays, prose and poems

by OldProspects on Apr 4, 2026 3:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, would not be surprising

If he can keep himself healthy, his fastball/curve combo should get him some major league time. Even if his changeup doesn’t come along, it’s not hard to see him making a K-Rod-like impact as soon as this summer.

Of course, he needs to stay healthy, which is no guarantee.

by mrkupe on Apr 4, 2026 4:04 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Dodgers

seem to like to bring pitching prospects relatively slow until they reach AA. Because it is a hitter’s paradise, if the pitcher does well, there is no reason to send them to AAA, which is a pitcher park. The talent level between AA and AAA is usually not that different. If the pitcher succeeds in AA with the Dodgers, they feel AAA is almost a waste of time.

Then, if they fail at the majors, they will send them to AA if it is mechanical(like Jmac last year, he was sent to AA because the coaches knew him and his mechanics), or if they need more seasoning, they could go to either AA or AAA…

There is a method to their madness..

by lakersdodgersyankees4life on Apr 4, 2026 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think teams tend to get the AA/AAA thing wrong a lot

You’re right in that the talent level is similar (although there is definitely a difference), but AAA players are just much more refined. For pitchers, I think that experience really helps them in developing major league caliber command. For a guy like Withrow who really needs to work on his third pitch and his approach to left-handed batters, I could see how AAA time could really help him in the long-term (even if it might produce initially ugly numbers that turn off prospects watchers, who are generally geared for instant gratification).

If you just wanted Withrow to face mostly right-handed batters or to just face guys once a game, he might be ready very soon.

by mrkupe on Apr 4, 2026 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

While I think AAA can help some guys

Others dont need it. I really want the Dodgers to leave Withrow in AA all year, no matter what he does. If he is highly successful(not necessarily numbers wise, but rather working on control and the changeup, while posting OK numbers), then give him a shot at the majors.

If he posts great numbers, but his changeup/control arent ready, he should go to AAA.

by lakersdodgersyankees4life on Apr 4, 2026 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

there aren't that many guys that "need" it as far as pitchers go

Position players almost always benefit from a good deal of AAA time, and for the toolsy/raw types, at least a full season of AAA makes a huge difference IMO.

For pitchers, it’s a little different . . .they don’t necessarily need it, but I do think it reduces the risk for everybody involved.

While Withrow might get knocked around in AAA due to the environment, I generally don’t believe in coddling players by putting them in situations where they “should” excel. It might make fans happy to see sterling numbers, but it’s not necessarily the best thing development wise. Even guys who are very good AAA players take their lumps in the majors, so I’d rather they get used to adversity earlier, at a level where the necessary adjustments won’t be quite as profound.

by mrkupe on Apr 4, 2026 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

what I meant by saying he needs it

Is if he posts great numbers in AA but his control/change isnt MLB ready, he shouldnt be sent back to a place he dominated. He should move up(even if the jump is minuscule).

by lakersdodgersyankees4life on Apr 4, 2026 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't really buy any of that

Albuquerque’s park is one of the most extreme hitter’s parks in all of baseball (and the entire PCL is a strong hitter’s league on the whole), and Chattanooga’s is neutral. I also agree with mrkupe’s point about the benefit of facing more refined hitters in AAA.

by jibs on Apr 4, 2026 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think I should have said there are two theories to why the Dodgers do what they do with pitchers

The other is the Dodgers recognize that there is a huge talent jump between A and AA. If the pitcher is able to successfully jump from A+ to AA, then there is no reason to send them to AAA, where they could get blasted by hitters in a hitters division and lose confidence. Also, they could feel that because the NL West is more pitchers-parks than hitters parks, if a player succeeds AA, they should be able to succeed in the NL West. I personally dont like this idea as a whole because it says 1. the players are weak minded when faced with adversity and 2. because they are able to succeed in a place similar to the NL West, they should be in the majors.. which sounds that they would possibly struggle in a place outside of the NL West.

(btw, I just realized I confused AA and AAA in my first post… you are correct that AA is neutral and AAA is a hitters park).

I prefer the 1st theory better, but that is the other I have heard.

I know the Rays claim that they are going to be hesitant to give him significant MLB playing time this year,

but mah boi The Black Panther is going to ride AAA like no other.

Imagine if he’s dropping a 1.000 OPS in June with plus-plus speed and plus defense in CF; they are going to have to call him up.

If the Rays are stupid and don’t let him exceed 130 MLB ABs, then I will slot Deezy at #4 and move Harper and everyone else down a notch.

Interestingly, I currently have Jennings at #4 for this year’s top 100.

RF

Trade Joyce or put him on the bench. I think they’ll wait to get the extra year of service, or try to sign him to a long-term contract a la Longoria.

Joyce is on the DL right now and there is still a logjam

S-Rod, Zobrist, and Kapler will all see time in RF… while Joyce is out. Hank Blalock can’t even make the team, and was sent to AAA

No room?

You really think they will let Brignac/S Rod stay in his way? They won’t be putting their best lineup on the field without DJ. I can see why they keep him down until June 1, but not longer beyond that.

by guru4u on Apr 4, 2026 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well . . .they might . . .

Brignac and Rodriguez don’t have the hype, but neither is a bad player, and both have spent time with the major league team before. It would not be a stretch to say that both could be better players than Jennings this year, and that’s not a knock on Jennings.

From a purley psychological standpoint

Does anyone else find the interest this post has generated highly indicative of our personalities and disposition as a whole? We all are lovers of speculation and prediction. Let’s remember what a top whatever list is: a general consensus that a party comes to of who is most likely to succeed at the highest level in the majors. We’ve now moved onto speculating our speculation! Not that I mind! I’ll be positing my top 10 shortly. I just find it interesting that clearly there’s something in our wiring which leads us to become fans of the educated prediction

I do have...

a slight man-crush on him. I think he ends up signing early and starts tearing apart the minors. He has four pitches that could all potentially be plus. His fastball isn’t the best, but he has good porjectabilty in his 6’6’’ frame and he already has good movement and command of it.

by joegonzo on Apr 3, 2026 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

When I say...

not the best I made it sound bad. It sits low 90’s and he can put it anywhere he wants to go along with really good movement. It is already above average and if he added 2-3 mph(which is totally possible) he could be a true “ace” in the making.

by doublestix on Apr 3, 2026 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really?

If there is a prospect out there I can actually see having an MCab type bat, it’s Montero. He’s definitely not a catcher but I can’t help but think he’d be alright at 1B if Mark Teixeira wasn’t planted there already. With Nick Johnson the only real hurdle between Montero and big league at bats, I could see him having a similar impact on the Yankees this year as MCab did on the Marlins in 2003.

castro

This is not an opinion on where I would rank Castro, but by chance was flipping the stations today and watched the Cubs\DBacks game on WGN. Castro looked really good in the field, canon arm, but his ABs caught me off guard. He is very thin so I wasn’t expecting much, but he worked a 3-0 count, took a strike and drilled the next offering to deep center for a triple. Nice at bat for someone so young. He hit a double later in the game too.

Just a quick note of my first impression on seeing. I don’t think he is going to be in the minors very long this year.

I do, thinking about Dave Duncan -probably best in the business

Carpenter
Wainwright
Brad Penny
Lohse
Boggs
(Pinero is in Anaheim)

I see Jaime Garcia finishing 6th - and while he’ll undoubtedly pitch in the bigs at some point in 2010, I’m optimistic he’ll maintain eligibilty for 1 more year (maybe

+ Hi me` is a the cool way to pronounce Garcia’s first name.

You don't understand, he's already in the show

Hellickson

My guess is Hellickson spends the entire year at Durham, just like Davis did last year and Niemann in ’08. He only threw 114 innings last year, so the Rays probably limit him to around 160 IP in 2010. Sonnanstine will get first shot at any spot starts, so unless they have multiple major injuries to their rotation, he gets nothing more than a September call-up. Not to mention that I doubt the Rays start his clock any earlier than they have to, especially considering the way they pushed back Upton and Young a few years ago. If everything works out, Hellickson might be the #1 Pitching Prospect in baseball in 2011.

thats a good point, and if you're right he'll be a good bet to be near a top 10 for 2011

I think Matt Moore has a big year

and with Hellickson, Brignac, Davis, and Deezy all potentially graduating could become the Rays top prospect and a top 10 guy.

If Westmoreland didn't have bain surgery

He could have made a serious push as the #1 overall prospect in 2011.

I agree.

Brett Anderson is the Truth. Brett Anderson is divine presence. Brett Anderson is eternal life. Brett Anderson is within you. Brett Anderson is here. Brett Anderson is Now.

Ummm...

Bryce Harper will likely be #1, simply because of all the (over)hype.

The only time the Mets win is in the offseason.
