Just recently signed up and i've been really disappointed with the lack of content, is this usual?

Bunk, BA is best used for their scouting reports.
I do like the weekly Jim Callis chats, though.

One thing to note about BA
Their rankings don’t take fantasy sports into consideration. They have a tendency to rank good defensive middle infielders who can’t hit way too high. They don’t give a squat about fantasy baseball.

I think you need a BA subscription or ESPN Insider subscription to participate or seem them live...
once they’re completed they’re available for all to see (though not terrible easy to find). Not 100% on this though.

timing
Well you are here so you like prospects.. well it is not prospect time at baseball america it is college and High School baseball time (yes those are prospects but not traditional.) They do post content everyday though.This is the time of year though that I rarely visit BA
I would say in about 3-4 weeks they will begin draft coverage and I assure you it is the best in the business and is very very intersting. Then you have a lag until September when it gets really good again with the league top 20s and then of course the reason 85% of people subscribe the team top 10’s. So there you have it.

There generally isn't a ton of content
It’s mostly good for using as a resource for research on individual minor leaguers, for their draft info, and for their lists during the offseason,

My biggest gripe is the layout.
Its awful. Its terribly hard to find when they post new stuff… and if you’re trying to find older stuff, well, good luck, because the search function is moronic and the way things are organized makes no sense whatsoever. Graphically, its a joke. I’ve never seen a website more badly in need of a redesign.

it would even help if they centered their content. on my 1280×1024 screen everything is off to the left with a ton of white space to the right.

According to my rss reader, in the past week BA has had 35 articles/chats. That’s roughly the same as what you’ll get from BP on a weekly basis.
