Padres are moving Blanks to LF
Experiment begins with Blanks in left
By Tom Krasovic, Union-Tribune Staff WriterSunday, May 10, 2025
An uncertain yet potentially far-reaching experiment by the Padres will begin soon when Kyle Blanks plays left field for the Triple-A Portland Beavers.

Blanks likely will be in left field Monday in Portland, said Grady Fuson, the Padres' director of scouting and development. The first baseman, who is blocked in San Diego by Adrian Gonzalez, has batted .304 with a team-high seven home runs in his first 29 Triple-A games.

Headley
Don’t the Padres have Chase Headley blocking him in left?

Nooo thats not right
They should Trade Adrian Gonzalez, especially if they can get supreme value for him.
Like Michael Bowden, Brad Penny, Jeff Baily or Nick Green, and Che-Hsuan Lin or Josh Reddick

PR hit
You don’t trade your franchise player. Especially not when he’s young and under team control.

I probably wouldnt do the deal, either
But Im not sure who would beat an offer like that (forgetting the extraneous parts). Youre getting two top 100 prospects, a top 50 guy in Bowden and a 50-100 guy in Reddick whose stock is skyrocketing right now. Lin isnt filler, either… he’s a decent prospect in his own right.
Gonzalez also is a platoon player. He can’t hit lefties at all. A Championship caliber team would not play him 40% of the time b/c of it. He’s not an asset defensively, either… even for a 1B - though he’s not particularly bad.
He’s very, very good… but I dont know how much teams would give up for him. So, again, dont know If Id do that deal if Im the Padres… but I dont know if theyre getting all that much more than that.

Dude has a .722 career OPS vs. lefties. He's hardly useless against them.
He should probably bat lower in the order against LHSP, and his days off should be planned for those games, but he’s not a must-sit.
On a side note, how do you do double splits on br.com? Was looking to see his vs. LHP H/R splits, just because I was curious. They have Road and vs. LHP, but not combined that I can see.

Come on... that's a must sit for a 1B
Slash stats career vs. LHP: .249/.310/.422 (.732).
That’s terrible. Beyond terrible. You wouldnt even really like that line from a platoon SS - never mind from a 1B.
Why would you ever play a 1B with those numbers? How easy would it be to find someone who can play 1B better than Gonzalez and hit LHP better than that line? There are tons of guys like that. Tons. Its basically well below replacement on a platoon basis. There are ready available off the street RHH 1B that could easily outperform Gonzalez vs. LHP. No reason he should ever be in against a LHP.
Tried to figure out how to get those splits… can’t find it.

to be fair
his numbers would be much better away from PETCO, he’s actually a very good defender and his contract is ridiculously team-friendly.

Um...
a .732 OPS from a guy who plays half his games in Petco isn’t terrible, certainly not from a platoon SS. It’s below the park-adjusted average for a 1B, but not by all that much. NL 1Bs are hitting .811 on average. Petco deflates both HRs and Doubles more than any other park in the league. Figure every player has at least some platoon split, and Gonzalez’s split v. lefties really isn’t much of a big deal at all.

The problem...
with comparing a starting 1B with a replacement platoon player who can mash lefties is that that player takes up a bench spot. Team’s can’t platoon every player with an accentuated weakness against same-handed pitching. San Diego could easily find someone who’s a good bet to put up slightly better numbers against lefties, but the extra couple of runs they’d get out of that isn’t worth a roster spot that could be used for better purposes than another player with limited defensive versatility (which applies to most of the AAAA lefty-mashers floating around on the free pile).
Adrian Gonzalez got 261 PA’s against lefties last year. Using wOBA, the difference between Gonzalez and a guy who can OPS ~.800 against lefties is about 8 runs, and that figure is misleading, because Gonzalez gets a disproportionate number of at-bats against lefties, since he’s a guy a manager will bring in a LOOGY to face in order to play the percentages. If the team were to bring in a bona-fide lefty masher capable of a .900 OPS, he’d be worth 10 runs more than Adrian Gonzalez with the bat, minus whatever you lose by an opposing manager’s decision to make him face a righty reliever late in the game (probably at least 2-3 runs given the high leverage situations where righty specialists would be brought in), and minus whatever you’d be giving up on defense - Gonzalez isn’t a gold glover, but it’s not really common to find a lefty-mashing platoon 1B who can bring much at all to the table. Call that 2 runs.
Add it up, and the difference between Gonzalez v. lefties and a guy who could put up a .900 OPS against them is worth about half a win. His platoon split’s not a big deal. His 3.5 WAR/year at his low salary, on the other hand, would be very difficult to replace.

You know things are bad when Bobby Crosby doesn't have the lowest batting average of any starter, yet he's hitting .138. Yes, you're 2009 Oakland Athletics.

All good points
Like I said… he’s a very, very good hitter and a fairly rare commodity. I just cant see a playoff team using him against LH starters. So that affects his trade value negatively.

Remember those two teams in the World Series last year?
Howard’s a career .231/.312/.462 against lefties. Pena is .228/.313/.452 for his career. How does .248/.309/.421 look in comparison? While calling Petco home?

Three year splits are more relevant
And 2007-2009 he’s OPSed right around what Morneau, Carlos Pena, Carlos Delgado, and Prince Fielder have, and no one would be saying any of those guys should be benched in a tight spot. He’s a pretty standard lefty slugging first baseman. Lefty sluggers like Papi and Howard are the exception, not the rule, as most power hitting lefties are going to have some trouble against lefthanders.

Honest question
Can you name five first baseman that you’d rather have than Gonzalez? Factoring in defense, his numbers away from Petco, and his contract. Because it’s pretty tough.
Who are these bums on the street you’d replace him with who could replicate his numbers out of the first base spot?

Seriously?
He’s certainly in the top half of defensive 1B in the game. I wouldn’t call him “not an asset”. His bat is already good and made even better by considering that he plays in an environment with park factors slightly less hostile than those found on the planet Jupiter. Move this guy to Fenway and his numbers would be obscene. AND . . .they’d be paying him like next to nothing in today’s game to do it.
It’s not really a bad package, but at the same time I think if that’s the best they can find then they might as well hold. Gonzalez is a rare find in that not only is he cheap, but he’s also 100 percent guaranteed production. And yeah, Bowden’s solid and Reddick might be an even better prospect than you suggest here . . .but neither is a sure thing. Bowden’s had spot duty in the majors and Reddick is still a stop away. If Bowden ends up being a mid-rotation starter and Reddick a fourth outfielder (not that I’m suggesting I feel that way, just noting that this is entirely possible), then the Padres will have traded one of the most valuable assets in the entire game for nothing. So I think it’s in their interests to make sure they’re not just getting a strong infusion of talent, but talent that is clearly going to make a difference.

I don't know about that...
UZR doesn’t love his defense. He was -6.6 last year, ~-3 the year before, and +7 the year before that. He’s all over the map.

Eh
If the only conclusion that can be taken from the data is that the data itself is inconclusive, we need a better system of evaluation.
That being said, I’m aware of the differing opinions on his glove. James Loney he is not, but I think even his detractors would suggest that he’s at least average and obviously his supporters think he’s quite outstanding.

Isn't UZR a judgement of range?
And thus not the best way to judge a first baseman, considering that he’s not fielding that many balls from the batter but instead needs to be adept at snagging anything thrown his way or commencing a double play, etc.?

"not an asset defensively"
AGon is EASILY one of the best defensive 1B in the game. Not that Gold Gloves are then end-all, be-all (see Rapheal Palmeiro), but he’s the reigning GG at 1B in the NL, he’s hyper-aggresive (and accurate) on throws to the plate or to 2B to cut down lead runners. He’s had a few uncharacteristic errors this season but that comment is beyond inaccurate.

Gonzalez
points i think people might be missing
1) Hes a great defender, one of top 5 defensive first baseman in the game
2) hes young in his prime player with a good contract, a combo you never see on the market
3) all these stats hes compiled, including his sub par production against lefties, have been in not just playing with one of the worst hitting parks in baseball but also, and in my opinion more importantly, hes been on the Padres, one of the top 5 worst hitting teams in baseball. The man has no protection. Every team who faces the Padres says Gonzo is the one guy they cant let beat them, if he were to go to a team like the Red Sox, Mets, or whoever else would try for him if available imagine the difference in numbers he would/could put up.

Road Stats vs. Ryan Howard
Adrian Gonzales
.308/.368/.578 22hrs 70RBi
Ryan Howard
.241/.317/.832 22hrs 71RBI
Gonzales in a better hitting environment and with a better supporting cast is a top 3/5 first basemen. You can see times when he expands his zone and presses just to try and pick up for the weak supporting cast.

Thread-jacked!
This thread was supposed to be about Blanks (.291/.391/.527).
He’s not playing LF exclusively - he played LF last night, today he’s playing 1B. Kouzmanoff needs to start hitting or the Padres will move Headley back to 3B, and call up Blanks to take over in LF (in a month or 2).
