Barnese injury update

Since some people have been asking about him, thought I’d share this here. He’s throwing in extended spring training, no timetable on getting assigned to a roster.

wow the sox pen is sick

Martinez, Okajima, Bard, Paps. This is the Yankees of the late 90’s type pen

Martinez? Do you mean Ramirez? And the also have Manny Delcarmen and Takashi Saito. That’s 6 guys who could potentially close for a team…plus Javier Lopez

Rich Hill

Pretty nice effort - walks something of a concern, but he’s still got some rust. The Orioles need him badly, though, so he might not make another rehab start.

Hanson

8 IP 6H 3 ER 3HR 1BB 9k’s. Obviously the 3 HR’s are unfortunate, but otherwise he was his usual self. Interestingly they let him go 107 pitches. I am very surprised they left him out there that long.

Re: HR

If I’m not mistaken, those are the first HR he gave up all year. I know he has extreme fly ball tendencies, but I wonder what was going on.

Augenstein

Bryan Augenstein will apparently be called up by the Diamondbacks to start Wednesdays game. Augenstein was 5-0 with a .78 ERA in AA.

completely skipping AAA for a guy who has done well at every stop in pro ball. It’ll be interesting to see how he turns out.

never heard of him

Now I see John gave him a c, average stuff but good command.

May be more than that, as he has very nice k-bb and groundball rates. Limited experience above A ball, but wow, look at his AA numbers thus far. 34.2 innings, 17 hits, 0 homers, 31 ks and 6 walks, 1.41 go/ao per milb. Gimme 2!

literally heating up?

average April temps in Burlington Iowa range from a low of 42 degrees to high of 63 degrees.

The average overall temperature in January in Broward County Florida, where Hosmer I believe is from (Cooper City) is 68 degrees. Maybe he was away from home, cold, lonely, and frightened. :)

People would rather just s*** on him than remember he’s only 23 y/o and young than some of the prospects who are coming up.

Count me as one of them

Delmon is a piece of shit in my eyes. Has been for quite a while. Was never that high on him as a prospect and he’s done nothing but solidify my thoughts about that as he rose through the minors. At the same time I realize he is still very young and has time to improve, but I’ve never seen him as the star most were saying he was destined to be.

They don’t. Numerous teams have better rotations (Tigers, Giants, D-Backs, and probably more)

It's close

Verlander is pitching great after a rough 3 starts
Galarraga was good until a rough 2 starts
Ed Jackson is pitching great
Rick Porcello is doing great as a 5
Dontrelle Willis is a ? but we will see.

For KCR, Grienke and Bannister (Meche is struggling now, I like Hochevar, but he hasn’t pitched). I call them about equal, but the upside on DET I like for some reason

I don't know when you show me Scott Shields or Scott Kazmir actually doing something

This year, then I’d believe in the Rays rotation but right now - I don’t

Yankees? Sabathia, Burnett, Hughes, and who else? Wang- ugh Kennedy - spasms

by SteveHoffmanSlowey on May 10, 2025 11:07 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

umm… Joba? (Who I do think is overrated).

Pettitte is underrated, OTOH. But CC + Burnett are both very good pitchers. The reason their numbers suck right now has a lot to do with the Yankees being a s**** defensive team and Yankee stadium being a disaster. Whatever, though… still a very good rotation.

I assume you meant James Shields… he’ll come around. I dont have much faith in Kazmir… seems like he’s hurt or all screwed up. Saw him live yesterday. He looks very, very different from vintage Kazmir and his velocity sucks. Still… he’s not even that bad despite that. Garza, meanwhile, has solidified the gains of 08 and seemingly taken another step forward. I like Sonnanstine, too. I wouldnt overreact to early results. Beckett and Lester are off right now… but their components are strong and theyll come around…. and Beckett looked filthy tonight. Beckett is just an idiot. He’s Nuke LaLoosh… dope stops pitching and starts throwing. Gets in a “he hasnt seen MY fastball” mode and leaves 97 mph heat middle in in his one breakdown inning each game.

by alskor on May 10, 2025 11:30 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Maybe just maybe the Tigers

But the D-Backs?
Brandon Webb is having a horrid year to date, Haren and Garland can’t do everything….
Scherzer isn’t locked in yet, I do like Yusmero Petit though as a back-end option.

But really I’d argue my point FOR the Royals at any time. Remember, I said right now -current standing.

by SteveHoffmanSlowey on May 10, 2025 11:05 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Webb having a horrible year?

Did you just glance at his ERA? He’s been hurt. He’s pitched in one game. Does everyone who follows baseball not know this?

what else can be done?

I can’t really account for your version of the rest of the season. All I can say is having probably the best pitcher in baseball, another top flight arm in Meche, three solid 3/4 guys and Ponson pitching above 5th starter status is a damn good rotation, and so far, the best in baseball.

by wildthang on May 12, 2025 4:03 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

LOL

The only person outside of KC who thinks Meche has a top flight arm is his mother.

it's not a subjective opinion

its a fact, the royals have the best rotation in baseball right now. Check the link above.

by wildthang on May 12, 2025 4:00 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I Did

And I’d rather use my brain than to just rely on one metric. Let’s look at the Royal’s starters, shall we? The phenomenal run Greinke is on is skewing the rotation’s overall numbers. When Brian Bannister is your second best starter, that should automatically eliminate any talk of having the best rotation. Then you follow him up with the very pedestrian Gil Meche who is a decent #5. Then you have Kyle Davies who in a word SUCKS. Hochevar should be an upgrade to Sidney Pondscum but he’s no sure thing to come in and do well, despite all the heavy breathing and hyperventilating here from the KC fanboys. Then there’s the fact that they’ve spent most the last two weeks pitching against 4 of the most feeble offensive teams in the AL: Seattle, Chicago, LA & Minnesota.

Here are the rotations who I think are better: LAD, SF, Atl, Cin, Fla, AZ, Cubs, TB, Bos, LAA, Minn and NYY. Phil, Det, StL, Tor, Sea all are in the ballpark too. When a rotation only has 2 above average pitchers, it’s not hard to be better than them.

I reject your reality and substitute my own.
