San Francisco Giants Farm System Discussion
I should have the Angels done soon. The next team on the list is the San Francisco Giants, to be followed by the Baltimore Orioles.
Use this thread to discuss the Giants farm system. Everyone knows about the key prospects here such as Bumgarner and Posey, but who do you like as sleeper picks?

I’m not sure it’s as dramatic as it looks. I think it’s partly the angle.
Or at the very least, other guys do it too

But the fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright Brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.

Guys I like
Brandon Crawford - Amazing defensive SS with some upside with the bat. He has to actually turn his tools into actual hitting ability, but he can take a walk and has a little power. Combined with the great defense, he could be an amazing player. I think, worst case scenario, he’s an ok all-glove player, which is nice at SS when he’s cheap.
Roger Kieschnick - Another toolsy guy that needs some refinement. Needs to improve his plate discipline. He’s got some legit power though.
Rafael Rodgriguez - Mostly projection at this point, but with his tools, and his impressive plate discipline at age 17, he’s a very interesting prospect.
Hector Sanchez - Not sure about his defense behind the plate, but a 19 year old catching prospect that walks almost as much as he strikes out is nice.
Jorge Bucardo - Strikeouts and groundballs are a great combo. I’ve read reports that believe he could add velocity, FWIW.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.

second on Bucardo the younger
..if he can maintain the groundball tendency at higher levels. An open question: he hasn’t pitched outside short-season ball yet and getting advanced hitters to pound your pitches into the dirt is a while lot harder.
by wcw on Nov 23, 2025 3:52 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Obviously I’m another big supporter of Jorge Bucardo. In addition, Jose Casilla’s another young pitcher who seems to get nothing but groundballs and Ks. Frankly, I’d like to see the Giants try him in the starting rotation in Augusta this year. A kid with his peripherals needs all the innings they can throw at him.
My Bucardo is better than yours.

Hector Sanchez – Not sure about his defense behind the plate, but a 19 year old catching prospect that walks almost as much as he strikes out is nice.
According to Baseball America, Sanchez skills with the glove were what AZL managers talked about most when BA was conducting their league review.

Tommy Joseph
Anxious to see what you think the Giants have planned for him. Obviously quite a ways away, but does he stay at C? Maybe a move to 1B? Does he have the quickness for a move to 3B? Bat looks to be real good, though.

My guess is Joseph ends up at 1B. Hopefully the Giants won’t make that move until he forces it though.

I second this.
I’ve always thought he lacked catching skills to stick there, but he has some tools to work with. He’ll never be an asset back there, even if he does stay there.

Andy,
What do you think of his bat? Approach at the plate?
A poster over at Mccoveychronicles.com was kind enough to post some instructional league footage. Seemed to have a great deal of power in a pretty compact swing for a big man. Reminded me a bit of LaPorta personally.
Thanks.

Great bat.
Elite potential. His calling card is going to be plus power, though his hit tool is above-average, too. His approach was hard to gauge in the spring, because like most elite preps, he got tired of being pitched around and got overanxious. He’s showed a solid-average approach in the past, and I woudn’t be surprised if he turns out to be above-average there, though it’s all about getting in a rhythm. If he starts out his pro career in a slump, it could spiral downward. If he starts out hot, the sky is the limit.
One comp he’s gotten with the bat is Paul Konerko.

Vert fast. Started hitting after he gave up being a switch hitter.
by Gobroks on Nov 23, 2025 3:25 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I’m really excited to see what lies ahead for Ford. He’s getting long in the tooth for a prospect but if he picks right up where he left off in the second half, he’s going to zoom through the system.
I suspect in reality he’ll struggle with upper minors pitching. His K rate was pretty alarming in the lower minors. Still there’s a lot to like about Ford, he’ll be interesting to follow next year.

I did a little write up on Ford earlier
He probably be a good 5th outfielder right now with his blazing speed and good range in CF. Is a great player for exploiting late game, high leverage base running situations. AA will be a real test for him at 23, which is about average age for the league I believe. I see Michael Bourn as his upside, who is himself a late bloomer.

OK, how about:
1. Francisco Peguero - Recently added to the 40 man roster and Baseball Americas #8 prospect in the Northwest League.
2. Chris Dominguez - BA’s #13 prospect in the NWL. Awesome power potential.
3. Edward Conception - BA’s #13 prospect in the AZL. Throws in the High 90’s.
4. Jason Stoffel - 2009 4th round draft choice with great rookie league stats.
5. Ydwin Villegas - Slick fielding shortshop. Mentioned in the chat as just missing the BA top 20 list for the AZL.

Two others:
Eric Surkamp - Gonna keep having to prove it. But if he puts up a similars K/9 at higher levels folks are going to have to start paying attention.
Craig Westcott - 30th round pick. Pitched only one year in college after transferring to Belhaven. In his first year pitching full time he went out and won the Mississippi college player of the year despite playing for an Div. 3 school rather than Ole Miss or MSU. Can hit 93 with the fastball already. I like that his arm is fresh and considering his size (6’4" 220 lbs.) and his recent transition to pitching, I think there might be more velocity there. Outstanding slider, which was probably in large part responsible for the high K rate. Really like him when I saw him pitch.

But with his strikeout rate in the minors, an admittedly very small sample, he’d be lucky to hit .275. He really needs to refine his approach as the plate.

Pill
Pill is a doubles machine but the question is will some of the doubles turn into homers when he leaves the pitcher friendly parks hes had success in. I’m still super high on him because he’s got a sweet glove from all accounts (and doubles machines work well in our park!), but hes also all ready 25 and was only in AA last year, hopefully he’s just a late bloomer!

Bond is moderately interesting in his .400 + OBP
However, his complete paucity of power is extremely worrying, for MLB pitchers will just keep throwing you strikes if you can’t hit the ball hard. I do not know anything scouting wise on his but hist line toned down a bit would be decent with average defense at 2B.

Andy Seiler has a little write up on him in his draft review
You can’t really take anything from a college juniors preformance in short season ball though, especially when considering small sample size concerns. Short season preformances are mainly relevant only for JuCollege, Prep, and International FAs, and even then they tell little. When looking at a 4 year college player’s preformance, I would only take disastrous preformances into account and even then, very little.

Nick Noonan
Lots of good names put forth thus far. I would like to bring up Nick Noonan, whom many have forgotten about. He was a disappointment to many last year and this year.
However, most have forgotten that he was only 20 years old for the season, starting second year in pros, and playing against pitchers who mostly had anywhere from 3-5 years experience, or 3 to 5 times his experience.
While his overall season numbers were bad again, he boosted them in the last couple of months, despite lower BABIP than earlier in the season, as he started figuring out how not to strike out so much, and the discipline that he was known for when he was drafted returned.
First four months: 37 BB vs. 87 K’s.
Last two months: 16 BB vs. 11 K’s.
And his walk rate didn’t really change much, if anything, the rate went down, but the big change was that he cut down on his strikeouts dramatically, resulting in a higher batting average, and decent OBP, which with decent power, resulted in a pretty good OPS for a 2B in the minors.
He hit roughly .294/.359/.432/.791 in those two months vs. .261/.334/..395/.729 overall.
Not really a sleeper since he was so hyped when he was drafted, but relative to the interest in him now vs other Giants prospects, I would call him a sleeper. And he will still need to prove himself at each level, since even in those two months he didn’t hit all that great, but still, he was 20 YO facing much older and experienced pitchers, and the change was dramatic, he was striking out 20+ times each month for the season, then not only dropped it into single digits, but managed to walk more times than he struck out, both of which he had never been able to do as a pro until then.

Watching him in HS before the 07 draft...
I never did figure out what anyone thought they saw in him. There were days he wasn’t even the best player on the field in a small-school, barely competitive league. Not quite as dumb a pick as the ones they wasted on Jackson Williams and Charlie Culberson in that same supplemental first round, but a pretty bad one nonetheless.

Matthew Graham, SP
BA said in August “A righthander from Oak Ridge High in Spring, Texas, Graham flashes first-round talent but lacks consistency. At his best, he’ll pitch at 90-93 mph with his fastball and back it up with a power curveball.”
Plenty of talent, and just maybe Dick Tidrow is the svengali who can develop that talent into something useful.
