Stange?
Still coming back from TJ, and pitched better than the numbers seem.
Hey guys, I run a music blog. alternative, powerpop, punk, electronica, screamo, etc etc, check it out. http://muzikdizcovery.blogspot.com/ artist interviews and many other stuff. free cookies! (not really, but still) :D

The numbers certainly aren't that good
But we did put him on the 40-man roster, so that says something I suppose. Was a bit of a confusing designation to me, since I really doubt anybody was going to keep him on their MLB roster all year.

But The Stuff
He has a 99 mph FB and a plus slider before the surgery. I made a post on him back when his ERA was under 4, and his FIP was under 3. He must have worn down, which isnt surprising due to the TJ.

The TJ
Does actually show some hope. It can take a year to get your arm feeling right. I could see a breakout ‘10 and possible shot up the rankings, and even into the majors (although we have a suddenly insane amount of bullpen depth, so I’d imagine we’d need at least two injuries, and both to righties, in the ’pen, because Esmerling Vasquez will be the first up).

Kyler Newby
I’ve always been impressed by the numbers. The D-Backs have moved him pretty slowly, but he has dominated at every level until his bump to AA last year. He struggled to strike people out like he had before, so maybe his stuff just isn’t too great, but he still seems pretty likely to be a useful major league reliever to me.

Disappointed
He didnt get an extended mlb trial. IIRC he was called up, then demoted without pitching.

It was to provide a fresh bullpen arm in case he was needed
After the Florida double-header because Augenstein had had such a short outing and our arms were all really tired, but he wasn’t needed. We did use Zavada though, then re-demoted and re-called him back, finally to stay.

You pretty much nailed it
We even 40-manned him in ‘09, but outrighted him off of it for 2010, although we did put him at Reno, so a rebound year means he’s a bullpen piece in 2011 and Heilman and Boyer are probably given the boot for Newby and Vasquez, who appears bound for AAA for 2010 as an injury fill-in waiting to happen.

Ryan Wheeler; steal of the Draft?
Holy cow this guy looks like he could be the steal of the draft. His teamate Angelo Songo was supose to be the prize of Loyola Marymount. Wheeler was supose to have trouble handeling the wood, well based on his numbers at short season, and his 8 game stint in low A, I’d say he’s absolutely someone worth watching. It will be curious too see if he goes to high A or jumps right to AA out of spring trainging.

Some names to consider
John Hester - made MLB debut but ALSO hit .328 at AAA & is still young (in catcher terms).
Orlando Mercado - nice 08 season
Taylor Harbin - some power for a middle infielder

Hester
100% yes. He’s gonna be the next montero

I'd stop short of saying that much
But anytime you have a MLB-ready(ish) backup catcher making league minimum with lots of control, that’s a huge asset. Catchers of Hester’s level or worse make millions in free agency.

He's A Sleeper
He’s had great power in the minors. Most of his power has been doubles, as seen by his very large amount of doubles by his at bats.

Orlando Mercado
signed a minor league deal with the Braves. He was a free agent.
Harbin’s stint at AAA was too short to tell anything. He needs a full season at AA in order to see if he is a prospect.

Mercado was let go
Not precisely sure why, perhaps we think Konrad Schmidt is for real? I’d think that’s an interesting choice, but I’m not exactly worried about our catcher position.
Harbin’s only real problem in Hi-A was striking out. The AAA stint showed what he could do if he reduced those, but you definitely can’t see he’ll keep up that low of a K-Rate. The ISO is for real, and 14 HRs from a 2B in a minor-league season is very nice. Seems Uggla-ish, in a way.

Just a couple of guys I'm interested in:
- LHP Dan Taylor from Yakima, picked I think in the 29th round in ‘09, had a great year (huge K-Rate, FIP around 3, ERA around 3.5), and faced tougher competition than the Belfiore’s and Schuster’s of the world. (perhaps this is a scouting report/pitch repertoire thing, which I have pretty much no access to)
- LHP Tom Layne from Mobile had a great year. I think he vaulted up the list for the organization. Sinkerballer-type that the D-Backs love so much, can start, and had a great AFL stint aside from one miserable game.
- 1B/C Sean Coughlin - Injury-shortened season, but he’s the reason we felt comfortable unloading Josh Whitesell once nobody in Japan would take him. That, and the signing of Bailey, but that was after the fact. Coughlin can swing the stick.
- OF Ollie Linton - OPS near .800 at Visalia (including OBP near .400), stolen base threat, great defender in center field. Seems like our best lead-off hitter prospect to me.
If you have the time, I’d really appreciate you letting me know what you think about these guys. Thanks.

So happy to see you cover the dbacks prospects, John
Me and IHSB of Azsnakepit did a ton of work doing a 5 part series that looked at the last draft, which was excellent, and both did a top 40 prospect list.
Players I’m high on: Belfiore, Wheeler, Broxton, Nick, Krauss.

Zephon does love his '09 draft picks. :)
