September callups

I just saw the news that the Cardinals say they have no plans to call up Colby Rasmus when the rosters expand in September.  So who WILL get September callups across the league.  Which callups will have the biggest impacts?

Will Maybin come up, despite his back problems?  How about McCucheon?  Will Price get a look-see?  Does anybody have any insight on their favorite teams, and how the expanded rosters will affect them?

What say you?

Rangers

Since they have already brought up just about all their rookies already the only one left is Julio Borbon. Maybe just a cameo but I expect to see him up sometime.

Borbons on the 40

Mayberry is not right now

I think

Mayberry would be added to the 40 this offseason anyway since he would surely be taken in Rule 5, which I believe he will be eligible for this winter if he is not on 40man

correct

But the Rangers have a bit of a 40 man jam right now so to make room for JMJ would take something creative. Plus with the addition of Nelson Cruz recently and the comeback of David Murphy there may not be any room in September for JMJ.

Price for sure

I would also love to see Weiters get his first taste of the bigs. Did any of the draft class of ‘08 have a provision like Dewon Brazelton/X. Nady/Andrew Miller that they’d be up in September?

by drwmsu1 on Aug 27, 2025 12:26 PM EDT reply reply   0 recs

not so sure

Not so sure why Price is a lock. He has been bad in AAA thus far(near 5 ERA and a 1.84 WHIP). Also, the Rays will need to add him to the roster before September 1st if they want to use him in the post season. And that day is approaching fast.

On Wieters, I saw where Dave Trembley said he wasn’t going to get called up in September.

As for your last question, I would love to know the answer to that.

Go Pirates!!!

My thoughts

Price does NOT have to be on the roster on the 1st to be on the playoff roster, he could replace someone who is on the (60 day?) DL, ala what the Angels did with K-Rod in ‘02. Even if they don’t want him on the postseason roster, they could use him as a LOOGY as they go for their first division title.

No Wieters? Damn, I don’t see what it would hurt to have him up, just to get used to it as he should break camp with them next year.

by drwmsu1 on Aug 27, 2025 3:51 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Wieters is getting the Bruce/Longoria treatment

They’ll buy an extra year of club control by bringing him up in mid-April next year.

by dkdc on Aug 27, 2025 4:49 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Sept. Call up

A september call-up, if I recall correctly, does not affect club control at all. Am I wrong?

30 days worth

it isn’t going to matter for a guy like Wieters

except

instead of having him for 6 years and one september you can wait and have him for 7 seasons minus an april

by bigsteve on Aug 27, 2025 7:06 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I believe

to get that extra year you would have to not call him up this Sept and keep him in the minors til June or July 1 of next year. That looks like an excessive holdback for such a player

by nms on Aug 27, 2025 7:12 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

No. To get the extra year you only have to hold him back 12 games.

The June call-up is for Super-2 status. If you call him up the 3rd week of the season, he’s a super-2, which means he has 4 arb years instead of the typical 3, but you still get 7 years.

Sheesh

Everyone reread that response. Isn’t that unnecessarily complex for what should be a pretty simple issue? Isn’t there a simpler, better way of determining service time? That’s ridiculous.

by Flynn Blake on Aug 28, 2025 2:30 AM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Super two is very confusing but service time is easy

Every day you are in the majors or on the 15 or 60 day DL you accumulate service time. After I believe 160-something days it is considered a full year. So if you are brought up in September and stay for 20 days then you go inot the next year with 0.020 service time. if you are then on the major league roster the entire next year you would end with 1.020 service time. And so on and so on. Well after 6 years you become a free agent. Whether its 6.000 or 6.157. So in essence a team can get almost 7 full years out of a player under team control if they are smart. For a team like Balitimore it would do them more good to get 7 full years out of Weiters than to get 6 years and this September.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Aug 28, 2025 12:35 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Yes

If you call a guy up in September for 20 days, he will then have to sit out 31 days of the next season for him to end that year with under 1 year of service time (and thus give the team an extra year of contract control).

Why 31? Long story.

Aaron Cunningham

Is very likely to be called up.

Yup

Thomas goes to the DL, so Aaron CUnningham gets the call. He’s been hitting in AAA like he was hitting off of a tee. Lets see what he does, I really like this guy.

?

any chance Dexter Fowler gets called up?

by ScottAZ on Aug 27, 2025 12:51 PM EDT reply reply   0 recs

Fowler will get the call

With Tulsa not headed to the postseason, the Rockies will bring Fowler up to maximize his at-bats. He’s not headed to the AFL, and he lost at-bats on the Olympic trip.

There is recent precedent with this, Tulowitzki never played Triple-A ball in 2006, but he got a cup-of-coffee, getting the call up straight from Tulsa that year.

by sdbaseballfan on Aug 27, 2025 1:03 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

phillies callups

it looks like carlos carrasco, lou marson, jason donald, and greg golson are headed to the AFL.

jason jaramillo, JA happ, and a bunch of AAAA filler look like the only locks for callups.

by variablesdont on Aug 27, 2025 1:54 PM EDT reply reply   0 recs

Golson/Carrasco

Aren’t going to the AFL. There’s a chance they both could be September call ups though.

The Phils going to the AFL are; Marson, Donald, Andrew Carpenter, and a few relievers and lesser prospects.

by Southwest on Aug 27, 2025 4:47 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

andrew carpenter just got called up.

i think you’re right on carrasco not going to the AFL, though.

Geez

really? why?
Hes got a 7 ERA in AA and it isn’t like he is some Samardjiza kind of raw talent.

by nms on Aug 27, 2025 6:17 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

He's been solid since he got bumped back up from A+

He started the year in AA went 2-7 6.94 ERA, got DLed for being out of shape. Went back to A+ and went 3-3 2.92 ERA, he’s been bumped back and went 4-1 3.44 ERA.

He’s mainly just a safety net, because the bullpen was gassed for 10 Innings of work last night.

by Southwest on Aug 27, 2025 6:24 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Maybin

He isn’t out with back problems right now. In fact he was mashing in his return from them. But he got bitten on the face by a spider 5 days ago which has resulted in him not playing. Will it affect him being able to play in September? What kind of spider was it? I have no idea.

Go Pirates!!!

re:

Yea I read that too, I’m sure he is ok as they havent mentioned anything to serious…. but I bet he gets some comments from his teamates over that. Earlier in the month the Marlins have said they would call him up, so baring he is ok I would think he would get some PT.

That would have shown a fighting spirit!

Glenallen Hill,

the guy who ran through a glass shower door to get away from a spider, probably would have died of fright had that happened to him.

Royals

Probably a bunch of non-prospects - Brayan Pena, Ryan Shealy. Neal Musser and Shane Costa if they get healthy.

Kila Kaahuie deserves a callup, but Dayton seems pretty reluctant to call him up. Carlos Rosa would warrant a callup, but he’s likely out for the year with injury.

Kila, I mean. A lot of times, you don’t want to put guys on the 40-man if you can avoid it.

If he isn't

they will be needing to find a way to add him this offseason anyway.

by nms on Aug 27, 2025 6:18 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

They have lots of room on the 40 man

Lots of guys can go to the 60 day DL, and they have dreck like Mario Lisson, Tyler Lumsden, Jeff Fulchino, Matt Tupman, and Jason Smith on it.

Few I would like to see...

but not sure they get the call:

John Raynor - Florida OF
Greg Golson - Philly OF
David Price - Duh
Entire Brewers AA HItting Squad (especially Gamel and Brantley)
Mayberry Jr - Texas OF
Chris Coghlan - Florida 2B
Ramus - STL OF
Marcus Sanders - Seattle OF
Mr. HGH - Atlanta OF
Maybe Greg Halman - Seattle OF (he will have to be on the 40 man I am guessing, cause he will get picked in a Rule V draft if eligible, which I don’t know if he will be)
Jake Fox - Chicago (N) OF/1B (Kid stumbled in AAA this year, but has been killing AA)
Greg Miller - Dodgers RP (just cause I think his statlines could be hilarious with more BB than IP and K)

"Michael Saunders"

Oh, and Greg Halman can’t be taken in the rule 5 draft this december - he was drafted as a teenager in late 2004, meaning the M’s have 5 years of club control before he’s eligible for the Rule 5 draft.

Are you thinking of Mike Wilson? He’s certainly eligible for the Rule 5 draft this year, though he’s not on prospecting radar screens (I’d still hate to lose him, given the dreck on the M’s 40 man).

Drafted/signed in 2004 = Rule 5 eligible this season

Actually, if he was drafted or signed at 19 or older, he’d have been Rule 5 eligible LAST season.

Jon Niese

Good news: likely will get called up, possibly to plug in the hole left by John Maine’s shoulder problems.

Bad news: first start likely against the lefty mashing Brewers.

by Lunkwill Fook on Aug 28, 2025 10:52 AM EDT reply reply   0 recs

+1

I was just thinking about that. What a disaster. If they can move heaven and earth to keep Pelfrey away from the Marlins from now on, can’t they just make sure a lefty doesn’t make his first big league start against the most dangerous team in baseball against lefties?

by aap212 on Aug 28, 2025 11:18 AM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Pelfrey et al

I doubt they skip Pelfrey now with Maine out. But, really, is it so hard to, say, give Stokes a spot start there?

by Lunkwill Fook on Aug 28, 2025 12:09 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Looks like they will

Cohen and company were talking about the plan to spot Stokes a couple of times to give everyone an extra day of rest, and to only use Pelfrey once a week from here on out. That makes sense, given the concerns about Pelfrey’s inning tally raised by Will Carroll and everyone else. It will also allow them to keep Pelfrey away from the Marlins.

by aap212 on Aug 28, 2025 12:19 PM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

against Brewers

First start against the Brewers? Let’s hope they don’t do this. Not the way to build confidence here.

Ripken.....thanks for the memories...

I'm pretty sure

they don’t have the luxury of choosing when to debut him, given the pennant race and their dicey pitching situation.

And if you are calling a guy up in a pennant race you have to be able to trust him to handle, physically and mentally, pitching against ANY lineup.

by nms on Aug 29, 2025 2:12 AM EDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Against the Brewers

Apparently, they’re now in discussion as to whether they start Niese or go ahead and let Brian Stokes or Nelson Figueroa get shelled.
