2007 Colorado Rockies Prospects

2007 Colorado Rockies Prospects

  1. Troy Tulowitzki, SS, Grade A- (I go back and forth between A- and B+ on this one)
  2. Chris Iannetta, C, B+ (I really love him)
  3. Ian Stewart, 3B, B+  (Still very young, have faith)
  4. Franklin Morales, LHP, B+ (awesome arm, needs control)
  5. Ubaldo Jimenez, RHP, B (awesome arm, needs control)
  6. Greg Reynolds, RHP, B (I like him, but I liked Justin Wayne and Jeff Austin, too)
  7. Dexter Fowler, OF, B (tools guy making progress developing skills)
  8. Shane Lindsay, RHP, B  (excellent power arm if labrum is OK)
  9. Jonathan Herrera, SS, B (similar to Erick Aybar)
  10. Seth Smith, OF, B (I think I like this guy more than anyone else)
  11. Sam Deduno, RHP, B- (awesome arm, needs control)
  12. Jeff Baker, OF, B-  (good bat, needs a place to play)
  13. Juan Morillo, RHP, B-  (awesome arm, needs control)
  14. Joe Koshansky, 1B, C+  (good power but batting average will be a question)
  15. Corey Wimberley, 2B, C+ (very fast, not much power)
  16. Manny Corpas, RHP, C+ (solid middle relief guy)
  17. Eric Young Jr, 2B, C+ (overlooked leadoff guy with speed and patience)
  18. Josh Sullivan, RHP, C+ (possible breakthrough candidate)
  19. Hector Gomez, SS, C+ (young and promising Latin infielder)
  20. Dan Mayora, SS, C+ (young and promising Latin infielder)
Others Of Note: Dan Carte, OF; Brandon Durden, LHP; Joe Gaetti, OF; Cole Garner, OF; Will Harris, RHP; Brandon Hynick, RHP; Andrew Johnston, RHP; Jim Miller, RHP; Matt Miller, OF; Chris Nelson, SS; Chaz Roe, RHP; Pedro Strop, RHP.

The Rockies in One Sentence: This farm system is underrated and deserves more attention, with a nice mix of power arms and position players with upside.

ALL GRADES ARE PRELIMINARY. If you hate a grade, feel free to make a case for me to change it, though remember that cases phrased respectfully using logic and facts are more likely to be viewed positively than those featuring insults and invective.

There is a lot of slack in the B-/C+/C range and players may move up and down depending on how my thinking progresses. Feel free to make comments, point out sleepers I may have missed, etc. Note that there is only a limited amount of space in the book, and the max I can do is 35-36 players per team.

And, as always, there is the helpful reminder to Buy My Book, which will lay out reports for all these guys (and more) in detail.

Eric Young
I don't think it's a terrible grade, but I could see Eric Young being a bit higher. Really, only his power is lacking and he'll never be the kind of guy to hit more than 10 HR per year anyway.

But he seems very close to being a quality leadoff hitter. His plate patience is excellent and his contact skills are above average so he should be able to post leadoff-hitter type OBP. And his baserunning, well, you don't see too many guys running like that these days.

by FI on Dec 7, 2025 11:32 PM EST   0 recs

I agree
Young should probably be a B-.  His success rate on the bases is a bit lower than you'd like to see, but his speed damn impressive.  His plate discipline is very good, and I think he should be good for at least a .360 OBP annually at the top of the order.  He and Fowler will make a great 1-2 combo in a couple of years.

Chris Nelson
Oh, how he has fallen.  Great athlete, but may never make it to the show.
The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.

by Savoy on Dec 7, 2025 11:40 PM EST   0 recs

too bad
agreed

Tulo was in front anyways

by blee3543 on Dec 7, 2025 11:45 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

i say he still has time....
...I think he's still Top 10 in this system....surprised he didn't make John's Top 20...I mean, he's struggled, but he's no trainwreck like Matt Bush or anything....

by daveh33 on Dec 8, 2025 12:24 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

It's just a very deep system
Chris Nelson is still a solid prospect, but Tulo, Herrera and likely Gomez have all passed him in the Rockies shortstop depth chart at this point. Plus, there are big concerns about his defense now, where he rated as one of the minors' worst defenders at short according to Jeff Sackman at Baseball Analysts. I think there's enough reason to drop him as others such as Herrera and Young have clearly passed him at this point, and Gomez has so much more upside. I think Wimberly might be a little over-rated because he's not that great of a defender either, but he certainly has the speed and ability to hit for average that Nelson hasn't shown.

by Rox Girl on Dec 8, 2025 8:30 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

i dont know anything about gomez...
...but Chris Nelson was the #9 pick a couple years ago...I remember hearing that his arm was a cannon, with a bat that would hit as well...He was only a high school kid, so I dont see how you can ignore that...and how gomez can have more "upside" than a Top 10 talent.

by daveh33 on Dec 8, 2025 10:35 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

Gomez was signed out of the Dominican
Choosing the Rockies at a discount over the Yankees and a couple of other clubs due to his relationship with one of our scouts down there. He's got soft hands, an arm equal to Nelson's fields the position better and has more power to his bat. The only player in the system that compares to his upside is Tulo and some scouts suggest he might be better. That's how you can "ignore" Chris Nelson (if you can call it that) who so far fields his position terribly, will have a decent but unspectacular bat in the majors, and is otherwise pretty solid.

by Rox Girl on Dec 8, 2025 2:18 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

thanks, before i saw your post i was checking
his stats...impressive, so why the hell doesn't John have him higher? Either you're a beat writer, or this kid should be Top 10 in this and most other orgs....

by daveh33 on Dec 9, 2025 12:25 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

That was my one comment below
when I first saw the list. Especially if he's willing to rank Gerardo Parra so highly on the D-Backs list, when managers in the Pioneer League (with whatever editorial input Bryan Smith added) had Gomez a few spots higher. Smith also said that Gomez had significant support for #1 in that league. I don't get why John doesn't have Gomez higher.

This is an excellent system, but I can name off guys who I certainly wouldn't have ahead of Gomez, from my limited knowledge.

by zywica on Dec 9, 2025 11:23 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

I agree
Gomez is too low here, BA is likely to have him in the top 10, or maybe just outside it. I could see taking him down a little for being so raw, but he's very very talented.

by Rox Girl on Dec 9, 2025 11:44 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

I agree
at least a B-

I like Fowler and Smith a lot. I think that Seth Smith is overlooked quite a bit and am glad that you recognized him.

Dexter Fowler is a nice looking prospect with speed and a good bat to go along with it. I am a big fan of him but I wonder if he will have a place to play. You figure Stewart moves to another COF spot because of Atkins and that leaves only CF with Holliday at the other COF spot. Then where does Hawpe fit in? He looked promising too.

I really like Lindsay and think he deserves a B+, or whatever the lesser grade of the HD of the HDVD Rangers quartet receives (Hurley and Danks).

Gomez intrigues me a lot as he tore up Rk ball. I think next year will be huge for his value if he can do the same at A-ball.

I think Brandon Hynick deserves to be in the top 20. He pitched real well in his first pro season and while at the low levels, he still looks real promising. I would put he and Gomez at the 19 and 20 spots.

Overall great job though, and I can't wait for the Rangers top 20.

doozy
ignore everything i just wrote

by blee3543 on Dec 8, 2025 12:10 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

Agreed...
on your comments about Lindsay, Fowler, and Smith.

Smith is intruiging because of those 48 doubles, how many of those turn into HRs in the futuer?

Fowler is a sick athlete, and one of the few pure athletes who seems to have turned his tools into skills.

Lindsay has an amazing arm, and is one of the few power arms the Rockies have with something besides a fastball. His knucklecurve on a good day is an out pitch. Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of torn labrums, or his hideous control.

One guy to look out for is Chaz Roe. He gets a mention from John. He's got the stuff with a low to mid 90's fastball and a sharp curve. Still, he gave up alot of hits, alot of walks, without a top K rate for someone with his arm. Any idea what caused his problems this year?

McCormick Field
I need to correct a comment I made due to a fuzzy brain over in the community prospect #41 thread. I said the Asheville Park is bad on lefties, which is false, it's terrible on right-handers because of the short right field porch.

Check out Roe's home/away splits and a different picture emerges, particularly in the OPS he allowed due to a spike in doubles and his BB/9 rate was a full walk higher. 3.72 BB/9 is still high, but not nearly as bad as the 4.24 his cumulative stats have him as. Also that .341 BABIP shows how the stadium and some flukiness affected his performance this past season. I expect a big turnaround in Modesto.

by Rox Girl on Dec 8, 2025 8:20 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

Smith
"Smith is intruiging because of those 48 doubles, how many of those turn into HRs in the futuer?"

Isn't it pretty much inevitable that at least 10-15 of them will, as he moves from a neutral to pitcher friendly park in Tulsa to Colorado Springs/Denver?!

He also hit 338/413/560 in the 2nd half last year, and his BB/SO ratio went from 19/46 in the 1st half to 32/28 in the 2nd half.

He's clearly catching on.  I expect some 315/390/550 seasons from him in his prime (those being Coors #'s of course)

by BaseballBrain on Dec 8, 2025 12:44 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Lots of talent here
With some of the surplus of hitters the Rockies have (Baker, Smith, Koshansky), there is definitely potential to add a SP or two I think.  Someone out there could use the power that Koshansky could provide, or the solid hitting of Baker or Smith.

I have to think that Koshansky is a B- though, not a C+.  His average has been fine when given more than 240 AB's at a level.  He struggled in AA in 2005, but it was only 45 AB's.  I think the two "full" seasons he's had show he can at least be a .270 hitter in the bigs.  He's improved his K/AB rate, and his BB/PA rate each year.  If Baker is a B-, I think Koshansky has to be also.

John, is Iannetta the best catching prospect in the minors?  If not, is it Salty or Clement?  I personally love Iannetta.  I'd hate to see the Rockies bring in someone like Barajas to eat up AB's this year.  His MLE's from this year in AA and AAA have him between .875-.895 OPS.  That's getting close to Mauer territory.

Morillo, Jimenez, and Morales-starters long term or closer and R/L setup tandem?  Hopefully they can all get their control straightened out, and form a very good rotation with Francis and Reynolds.  If not, that would be one hellacious power end of the pen.

Last question, if Stewart puts up numbers in 2007 that are similar to 2006, do we start to worry then?  I know he's young, but his BA, OBP, SLG, BB/PA, and his BB/K rate have all decreased since his huge 2004 campaign.  Was 2004 just so unreal, that he's come back to more reasonable numbers, or is it just his age relative to league?

Thanks for doing the Rockies by the way.

TULO? B+
John how can you consider him a possible B+ and have him ranked so high at Roto.
I think he is A-. and ranked properly by you at rotowire.

by novaoakland on Dec 8, 2025 1:50 AM EST   0 recs

Corpas
FYI....Corpas is no longer a rookie.  While he didn't eclipse the inning mark, he did eclipse the "days in the majors" mark by 1 day.

I love the kid and think he's a future 8th inning guy maybe even closer (rather than "just" middle relief")......however since I believe he's no longer a rookie, you'll have to bump him off your list.

I'd vote for Chaz Roe or Chris Nelson to take his place in the Top 20.

In the "others of note" section, I think you're leaving out Xavier Cedeno, Alvin Colina, Ching Lo, Darren Clarke, Philip Cuadrado, Jason Van Kooten and especially Anuery Rodriguez!

Also, every single one of the Rockies Dominican arms were terrible in Rookie ball their first year (Morales, Jimenez, Morillo, Rodriguez...etc).  Keep an eye out for Yull Silano who could break out next season.

Baker
With his awsome debut last year, I think you have to give an upgrade from a B- to Baker. Yes, he's a tad old, and his progress has been slowed by Ian Stewart always being in the way. However, Baker has proved that he could play at the major league level, and if he was on another team like the Brewers or Devil Rays, he'd be starting by now

by sagecoll on Dec 8, 2025 7:28 AM EST   0 recs

Point taken
but, I really doubt he'd be starting for the D-Rays right now.  That system has so many top of the line hitters.

by drob320 on Dec 8, 2025 8:08 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

Great system
I think Gomez should be higher.

by zywica on Dec 8, 2025 9:10 AM EST   0 recs

Smith
I like Seth Smith just as much as you do, John.  I was hoping you'd give him the "B" he deserves...very solid prospect, not much there not to like.

He OPS'ed 1000 during the second half last year at a relatively difficult hitting park, and has plenty of tools.  Age is the only slight negative.

Dumb question for Rockie fans
I read a good article on Koshasnsky at www.minorleaguebaseball.com. They said he could be the starting 1B for the Rockies in 08.
Yesterday I read a newspaper article on Todd Helton that touched on rumored trade intrest by the Angels. That article mentioned he still had $91 million on his contract.

Anyone know when his contract expires? Is some of the $$$$ in option years?

Thanks

by colinadam on Dec 8, 2025 10:36 AM EST   0 recs

Helton contract
see link:

http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2005/01/colorado-rockies.html

Contract thru 2011, $23M club option for 2012, but Helton can opt out after 2007 and become FA.

Helton albatross
Helton would have to be an absolute fool to opt out after 2007.

by JakeFree on Dec 8, 2025 11:27 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

Well
I am not sure with today's market. If he can come even close to his peak years then he can really cash in.

by yoda1 on Dec 8, 2025 11:37 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

wtf
Cash in?

How exactly is he going to get more than $20m per year on the decline of his career?

Helton would be an absolute idiot to leave after 2007.

Rays in '08....

by youALREADYknow on Dec 8, 2025 11:39 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

Name one player . . .
who has put up numbers like Helton did in 00-01 at the age of 34 (not counting BB and his steroids).

Helton is guaranteed $73.5M between 08 and 12 (including the option buyout).  Based on his home/away splits, who would pay him more than that for his age 35 and up seasons?

Something else to keep in mind - I don't know if he has a no-trade clause in this contract, but sometime around the end of August, he should qualify as a 5/10 player.

Juice would help
There's actually a few good seasons recently by guys who were 34, but it looks like being on the juice could have been beneficial in some cases:
Big Mac 1998
Larry Walker 2001
Edmonds 2004
Manny Ramirez 2006
Palmeiro 1999
But even with out of control spending and if he does have a monster season, he still probably wouldn't beat his current deal.

by e 6 on Dec 8, 2025 3:15 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I agree
I agree, but if he has a monster year, like his 2000-2001 numbers, and if FA spending continues to spiral out of control, he could potentially make more.

Look at the list of potential FAs for next year. How many 1B are there? None - just a couple that might play it as a secondary position (Guillen, Dunn, Kent)

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2006/10/2008_mlb_free_a.html

So it's unlikely, but as crazy as it seems he could find someone willing to spend more than $16+M/per.

Iannetta versus Montero
What's the thought about how Chris Iannetta stacks up against Miguel Montero?  Would really like some thoughts on this.  As my only point of reference I thought Baseball America ranked Montero one slot ahead of him when ranking their PCL Top 20.  But hey, what do they know???

by klmstrat on Dec 8, 2025 11:31 AM EST   0 recs

ditto
Can't wait to see the numbers he puts up next year in Colorado Springs.

by colinadam on Dec 8, 2025 12:35 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Yeah
In my eyes he should at least be a B. He had a .284/.371/.526 line in Tulsa and is 6'4 225 hr hitting lefty.

by Havok1517 on Dec 8, 2025 7:49 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Jeff Salazar
What about Salazar?  I have seen various reports saying he is in the running for cf job next year but he is not listed as top prospect.  A few years ago Peter Gammons noted him in the same breath as daric barton with more bb's than K's.  What is up?

What are the scouting reports on Baker and Smith?
What would a fair trade for either/both be in general? for the Minnesota Twins?

it's a bad strategy to base your lineup on the relative beauty of a man's outs rather than the rate at which he makes them.

If the Rockies can find a CF,
they should be in good shape the next 5 years.

Someone in Denver needs to get the media to tone down on "win now at all costs".  The Rockies need another year or two to get a couple more pieces from their farm before they can go for it and sell substantial pieces from the farm.

I haven't heard anyone mentioning the idea of moving Garrett to 2B.  If Stewart is close, that would help improve the lack of production from players up the middle.

Go Rangers!

by rooster on Dec 8, 2025 1:36 PM EST   0 recs

Garrett? as in Garrett Atkins?
If you have ever seen Garrett Atkins play 3B, then you know why he won't be moved to the middle infield.  I've only seen him on a limited basis in person and have watched him many times on TV.  My assessment is that playing league average 3B is about as good as it gets from Atkins defensively.  He just doesn't look like he is athletic enough to make the transition, in fact, I would go as far as to say he looks stiff.

Luckily for the Rockies, he continues to play well both with the glove and the bat.  Even saying that, I doubt that they ever move him to 2B.  I mean, look at all the middle infielders they have coming up.

The search for the next great lefty starter has begun.  The legacy of Cole Hamels is at stake.  May Colbert bless you all.

Tulo
I would think that he's a B+... what bothers me is that he hasn't backed up all the hype over him with any numbers... While a professional, he's never slugged over .500 and never hit higher than .300. I'd think an A- prospect should have at least done one of the two.
I'll be the first A+ prospect... www.myspace.com/posingforpennies

by ufoboy90 on Dec 8, 2025 6:36 PM EST   0 recs

You're kidding, right?
He just turned 22 two months ago, reaching the majors in his first full professional season. He posted better numbers this season in a more pitcher friendly environment in Tulsa than he did in his debut in High A last season in Modesto. His season stats were just a few off of your arbitrary guideposts at a very high level of competition at one of the most skilled defensive positions on the diamond and you are complaining that he's not put up numbers? If the Rockies had limited him to start at one of the easier levels like the Devil Rays did with Longoria do you really doubt that he would have cracked a .300 AVG or .500 SLG?

For a comparison, here are the numbers that Stephen Drew put up at the same levels and ages coming up with the Diamondbacks:

...

Oh, wait. Sorry, Stephen Drew was a year older at every level, there is no comparison. If anything, A- might not be high enough.
