This year's Paul Goldschmidt is...
...Tommy Milone, LHP, Athletics
As far as underrated prospect who will breakout into a solid major leaguer this season goes.
Like Goldschmidt in 2011, Milone is not showing up on any top 100 prospect lists and is barely cracking the lists of A's top 10 prospects.
Like Goldschmidt, Milone has put up great minor league numbers at the lower levels, but being overlooked by scouts because of a glaring weakness.
*with Goldy it was the strikeouts despite his great plate discipline and power production
*with Milone it is his lack of velocity despite his great control and minor league strikeout rate
Like Goldschmidt, Milone has a clear path to playing time at the major league level.
Take a flier on this guy late in your fantasy leagues this year and reap the benefits!
P.S. Unlike Goldschmidt who has power from the right side, Milone has power from the left side!

I like Drew Smyly a lot more in this spot
Plus, he plays for Detroit, so he’ll get plenty of support. $.02

Vincent Catricala for me
Slightly more recognized than Goldy at this time last year, but very much show is getting underrated due to his lack of a defensive home. Also blocked by a few guys above him in terms of getting AB’s at 3B, LF, a/or DH, but has had a very promising spring training, work ethic is a plus from all accounts, and should be the Mariners 3B by this time next year.

Catricala making a similar jump this year

That's not bad
I don’t think he’s got Paul Goldschmidt’s pure power (few do) but they are similar in a lot of ways including work ethic. If Catricala is similarly underrated defensively then this possible comparison makes even more sense.

Less power
much better hit tool. They’re pretty similar as bat-only players, but Goldy’s power is probably the best tool between the two.

Petit got killed by the HR even in the minors
There’s no similar black mark on Milone’s resume.

Better comps
Goldschmidt was a guy who scouts didn’t think would have success at higher levels despite showing good statistical numbers at lower levels. Guys that fit his profile (so-so scouting, RHH power 1b, good stats) include:
Mark Canha - FLA
Jesus Aguilar - CLE
John Whitaker - OAK
The Dodgers won't win a playoff series until the Cool-a-Coo returns.

What about Alex Liddi?
Doesn’t have great patience, but real power. Don’t think it’ll happen…but I didn’t think Goldschmidt would either.
